Thanks for posting the list John. It makes me crazy when he doesn’t include a list of what he talks about in the video info. It’s lazy! And he is missing a sales opportunity by not linking out to his specific products - i.e. the seeds he talks about in his video. Not sure why he doesn’t - but I appreciate you doing this! Thank you!

Thank you John!
I grew Burpee's Curly Kale behind the annual flowers in front of my suburban home north of Detroit for years. I would go out in slippers, shake the snow off the plants, then cut the top leaves for salads and the bottom leaves for cooked dishes. The plants would only die back in about February, but the underground root would send up a fresh plant in April. Wonderful nutrition.
Here in the Netherlands, where kale is such a staple winterfood. It’s common to harvest your kale after the first frost. Because of the frost they taste really improves, it has to do with the kale producing sugars as some kind anti freeze.

Interesting!!
Alabama here. Thankyou so much for this video. I purchased organic pole beans yesterday, in hopes of getting them in the ground next spring. I planted bush beans this past spring and we had close to 50 inches of rain from January until just a few days ago. Everything drowned. I just planted the pole beans and will plant snow peas in a bit. I will plant kale later today, not for us but for the chickens to have great eating during the winter. This video has encouraged me to look well beyond my thoughts.
I started growing cilantro micro-greens. It was a flop, so I dumped them in my garden and up they came. I ate them when they were very little, like a micro-green and they were awesome. And it takes very little time for them to get that size (about 4-6 inches high). What goes to seed, just save the seeds and start over.

I'm in eastern Kentucky (also in the Appalachian Mountains, but on the other side) and our season is really close too. My first and last frost dates are very close to his (and probably yours too!). It makes it easier to not have to translate his suggested planting times, which is nice. Hope you've been having good luck with your garden this year!
I know that this video is a year ago. I just started my garden in June of 2021. I started buying my basic supplies as soon as gardening supplies were on the shelves. I have a smal garden but it is growing well right now.

Luke, you do an amazing job explaining for newbies and suggesting the best options for all levels. Immediately subscribed because other YTers never really taught me what I needed to know. Just watching 3 of your videos has helped me to figure out several of my problems (in NW Arkansas zone 6B) with cilantro, peas, spinach and broccoli never gave good harvest. And NOW I know that they are all heat haters. What??? Your knowledge of the benefits was amazing. Purslane is something I will definitely research and try (I think I had some growing and I thought it was a weed). Thank you SOOO much for excellent channel and content. HUGS!

One of my chinese friends recommended planting bok choi in September. Like some of the other leafy plants, it tastes better in cooler weather (and bolts quickly in hot weather). It's also on my list for this fall.

@@charleskelm3703 Insect damage might not be as big an issue in cooler weather, especially in cooler regions & protect against groundhogs & rabbits. You can use nonpoisonous bug repellents like home made sprays of insecticidal soaps made of non GMO vegetable oils + non-detergent liquid dish soaps or castile soaps. First, spray hard with a hose nozzle to squash & dislodge insects & then follow up with a soapy, oily fine spray to soak & smother aphids, eggs,& larvae if all kinds, so beware of killing beneficial insects in various stages if possible, & hand pick or use alcohol on a cotton swab to get at clusters of aphids, etc.

September is the beginning of our main growing season in South Louisiana! Brassicas, roots, all salad greens, beans, herbs and more. Eggplant and okra are still going strong from the summer garden. This year I'm expecting a second fruiting of sweet peppers and for the first time I'll have fresh tomato seedlings to try for a fall crop.

I am in Slidell, Louisiana and new to gardening. Can you give me some things that should do well planted in grow bags and beds right now or soon. Can they be planted directly in the garden or do I have to start inside? I would appreciate any info you would share. Thanks 😊
@hyacinthABC
Жыл бұрын
@@kathymcgathy4579 Right now it's still a little hot to plant most things directly in the ground (or bag) but you could try a few bush beans (read the packet to see if they need to be soaked first) and collards and beets if you like them. I have some fall crops in the ground under shade cloth but I started them indoors - broccoli raab and some Asian greens. If you ever want to see my setup, I'm in a community garden in mid-city and I have a pretty flexible schedule. I tend to go there after 5 when it cools and is still light. In a few weeks you'll be able to plant all kinds of salad greens and winter stuff like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and a whole host of others so I'd recommend starting those seedlings now (except for the carrots - I can show you a couple of starting methods for those if you give me your email.) Start them indoors so you can control the conditions. There are some great KZreadrs to help with that: NextLevelGardening and Roots and Refuge Farm are two I follow.
I love those sunflowers, a whole bed devoted to them.

It's widespread belief here in the Netherlands that Kale gets better after the frost got over it. It's not necessary for a great harvest but it gets sweeter.
Love the bean tip of nurturing the soil if you don't get any beans! This video is super helpful as I am gardening on the PNW (southern Oregon) coast, our year round temps are fairly mild, night and day!

Super helpful video thank you! I imagine a lot of us don't even think about growing in September. I am for sure and this helps. Thank you!
Great idea with beans! I just started clearing a new area in my yard for future gardening but it looks like it can become current gardening space now!
Thank you always very informative video. I plant 2 weeks ago radish, kohlrabi, carrots. So far they look very healthy. I'm also getting ready to transplant broccoli and cauliflower seedlings. I'm planning to protect them using floating row cover when the temperature really get cold.
Thanks for pointing out that beans make a good cover crop even if they don't grow all the way to maturity. I've got a bare spot in my garden that could use a cover crop. If the beans make it before the frosts hit, then it's a bonus. :D
Luke I love your energy. Love from the UK x
First time grown climbing spinach. I planted 15 seeds but only one came up and its climbing over 4' 2 climbing vines. I plan on bring it in for winter, and 4 tomato plants too.
That kale bed is gorgeous. Such a perfect plant. Beautiful and super nutritious.

I planted only 7 green bean plants & Every other day picked 3 1/2 dozen everyother day and Still more coming up! Joyful gardener!
I'm going to have to try this! I've got a ton of space to plant stuff!
I’ll have to try mustard greens, kale, and arugula. Thanks for the tips.
Hey Luke! I'm playing with some purple basil. I planted it 2 weeks ago and it's germinated and growing. I think I can pull off a harvest over here in NY before frost!
Thankful for all of the info, and particularly about when to plant garlic.
Love your positive outlook 🌻
Helpful...thanks! Now I know why I gave up on fall plantings- too impatient. It’s still in the 80s here in August. Will start some greens under lights, but wait until mid-September to put them out.

I over wintered bunching onion last fall in 6b FFD 10/15, they are still growing. I used a cold frame and harvesting delicious greens from them ever since established . I've pulled out some as well in between and cut others to the ground and they come again. Sow them densely.
Thank you. Super helpful :) Blessings

Another great video! I started pulling out tomatillos and was just thinking about what to put in their place. 😀
You could always grow some hydroponic tomatoes indoors. They might not be as tasty, but it is nice in the winter to have something growing, even just for fun!!
I started my beans late in the front garden this year and they are growing like Jack and the Beanstalk. Radishes - YES. Spinach yes, what about swiss chard and other greens, romaine, green lettuce, etc.?? What about sun blocker cloth to protect. I am right at the edge of those temps. You answered a lot of these questions so thanks - blocker cloth?

My Scarlet Runners and Lima's I planted in spring are still producing a ton. I have some radishes growing as well, I am not sure I planted them deep enough as the roots seem thin and stemmy. I should start some spinach; I do have kale and lettuce going. I am about to to buy some mustard greens after watching this. I am going to put in some garlic, potato onions, and walking onions this weekend in my....wild area garden, which is sort of an experiemental area for me where I plan to grow some perennial varieties . I am going to plant some perennial kale and sunchokes as well. Not entirely sure the best time to plant them but I'm gonna go with fall. I also have an overwintering purple broccoli variety I am trying out. I NEVER have good luck with broccoli, cauliflower, or head cabbage. I think I always plant it too close but they just take up so much room.
I just planted peas today. I cant wait!
