We need to normalise 19th century cloaks for a winter wedding. Flows beautifully, can be so so ornate and they're sO warm 🥰

Step one on planning a winter wedding: DON’T. Joking, joking (not really, I live in Buffalo, send help y’all) 1. Minimize travel for yourself and guests 2. Pick seasonal appropriate clothing and fabrics - don’t wear that flowy boho dress with the back out sis; don’t. Don’t require your wedding party to wear thin satin dresses either or I swear to - 3. Make sure you have a ‘snow’ location if you want an outdoor ceremony; you may want to look into wedding insurance if it covers cancellations or rescheduling due to storms, etc. 4. Like Jamie said, be mindful of your guests! Everyone isn’t resistant to cold, even people who come from cold areas. 5. Hot drinks. HOT DRINKS. 6. Just don’t have anything outside, please don’t or I swear to - 6b. Clearly advise guests if there will be any portions of your ceremony outside. 7. Account for longer potential delays in your timeline. Winter driving takes longer on the best of times. 8. Consult with your photographer on a timeline for photos; it’s dark at 4pm where I live and I’m not okay. 9. Stay hydrated and supplement if needed to combat the SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Fish oil man, fish oil. Maybe a sunlamp. Gosh, I’m so tired- 10. Have fun!

My sister got married on Dec 26 last year. It was a postponed wedding from 2020. If you are having your wedding around Christmas/winter break time in the US, and you want more people to come, you need to send save the dates much earlier, because it is a prime time that people tend to spend with their families and may have longstanding traditions they can’t get away from!!

Or they may take other vacations during that time especially if they have kids who are on a school break!

One other thing to add about coats and being warm between photos. My wedding was in October, it wasn't even particularly cold and I'm a person who is usually always hot, so I just took a thin white coat I had for photos. I ended up bundled in blankets in between photos so that I could avoid red fingertips and runny noses that had to be edited out of photos. All of this to say, you're going to want to be warmer than you think ESPECIALLY if you are somewhere that actually gets quite cold in the fall/winter.

2 pieces of advice for winter weddings: (1) Manage your expectations if there ISN'T snow on the ground on your wedding day. I was so disappointed there was no snow on my wedding day and I wish I had considered that as a possibility to manage my expectations. Pictures still turned out beautiful because photographers are magic. (2) Have a solid flow plan for guests. So many venues just reuse their reception space as an indoor ceremony space and it feels very last minute and very "plan b" when it's really your plan a. I had my venue revamp where guests enter and how they moved from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception to make guest flow feel very intentional. Oh and spary tan lol! I wish I had gotten a spray tan to not look so pale in my white dress in the dead of winter!😆

Something I didn’t anticipate throughout planning our January 15th wedding was vendors responding with “We‘re not focused on 2023 weddings until after the 2022 wedding season“ 😵 Aside from the venue itself, it was pulling teeth to get vendors to even talk to me until less than 3 months out rather than 4-6 months. So much was still up in the air at 60 days out

My dream is a late November wedding because it leaves a month on either side between Canadian Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've even thought out wearing a cloak instead of a veil for a fairytale element but also for warmth.

I am getting married in late November 2023 and i have been warnes that i qill be paying a lot more for alcohol. In summer a lot of couples are surprised that guesta drank sooo much water, because it is super hot. Also, white wine is often prefered. In winter, people go for the reds, they don't drink as much water and go for more alcoholic drinks. So yeah, something to keep in mind. We are also doing hot drinks. A small portion of the party will be outside, but we have outdoor heaters and a bonfire (unless it rains xD). I find christmas magical and we wanted early december, however, flights for people flying into the country to celebrate with us were tripple the price the first week of December, compared to late November. Also, if you choose a church wedding, a lot of dates on december might not work because they won't be available.

A consideration you didn't mention in COVID/post-pandemic times: Winter weddings almost always need to be 100% indoors, which is a much bigger risk factor for the spread of COVID and other respiratory viruses. Pre-event isolation & testing, ventilation, etc. all become much more important when planning an event that can't be held outdoors. It's also a much higher risk of getting cancelled if the bride and groom get sick, or if people need to travel in for the wedding.

I’m getting married March 5 in Atlanta…could be 20 degrees and snowing or 65 and sunny so we have contingency plans for everything (which is slightly overwhelming). Our venue has indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces and my fiancée really wants to be outdoors. However I’m having a string ensemble for the ceremony and cocktail hour and learned almost no musicians (regardless of instrument) will perform in temps lower than 55 degrees. I had NO idea about this until I started trying to book our musicians. Also, if temps are lower than 55 degrees we can’t have our additional bar set-up outside so we will have one less bar. We’re paying for space heaters and hand warmers for guests and praying for 56+ degree temps. 🙏🏼🤪

Cold-makes-batteries-DIE. Phones, cameras, so on will shut off or lose power super fast! You probably won't be spending a lot of time in freezing or well below that but your phone might more than you think. I have definitely taken my phone out of a jacket pocket, not feeling especially cold thanks to my coat, and found it off with the battery fully non-functioning. Driving in with camera equipment in the trunk will find that issue too.

I’ve had a couple close friends that got married around Christmas. One the week of New Years, and a different friend the week before Christmas in the following year. It is not ideal. Those weddings were a blast and I wouldn’t have missed them for the world, but I was disappointed that I couldn’t make other Christmas plans. It meant I needed to plan my time off work around being available for those weddings, and therefore couldn’t plan to see family. The friend that got married around new years even had family that didn’t come to the wedding because of other Christmas season travel and traditions.

I just postponed! New years was going to be the perfect day to start our new chapter, but nothing was falling into place and everyone was going to freeze unless we picked an inside venue, which we didn't want. We just couldn't get past the weather, but a winter wedding would have been beautiful even if no one was comfortable 😍

I would suggest a Boulder darker colder palate than jule tones. Burgundy, wine, plum, Royal blue, navy, eggplant. That's sort of thing. Also something warm like a velvet cloak as a hostess gift might help with the temperature of people who ignore your warnings.
