HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT SIZE TRACTOR? TOO MANY CHOICES! 🚜👨‍🌾

How to pick the right size tractor for you? This can be a very daunting task, one that is hard to really even figure out where to start? Well, it helps to simplify the process and not worry about all the manufacturers, series, and model numbers in the beginning. I always suggest to my customers to make a list of needs and wants. Things like budget for the tractor and attachments (maybe a trailer or shed/barn too), a list of desired features, and a list of tasks that need to be accomplished. After that, you need to start prioritizing as there is rarely a tractor that will check every single one of those items off your priority list and keep you 100% satisfied.
However, this doesn't mean you can't find an excellent tractor that will serve you well and make you very happy It just means that you need to get realistic with your expectations. So, ranking those items you've written down will steer you to the right machine or at least frame size to narrow it down to a handful of machines. This takes a lot of the hopelessness out of the tractor purchasing process because it gives you a real solid place to start searching. This video is meant to be an introductory lesson into determining the right tractor for YOU! So, check it out and SUBSCRIBE so that you can follow along with upcoming videos diving into specific series of tractors to see what if they might be the right one for you.
IDEAS FOR YOUR PRIORITY LIST!
KEEP IN MIND, THAT THERE'S NO PERFECT TRACTOR, SO GET THAT OUT OF YOUR MIND!
*BUDGET FOR THE TRACTOR, ATTACHMENTS, TRAILER, STORAGE
*DO YOU NEED TO MOW?
*DO YOU HAVE CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS FOR 3 POINT ATTACHMENT SIZE?
*DO YOU HAVE MINIMUM LOADER REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS LIFT HEIGHT OR WEIGHT?
*DO YOU WANT A QUICK ATTACH BUCKET TO BE ABLE TO SWAP OVER TO PALLET FORKS, A GRAPPLE, SNOW PUSHER, ETC?
*ARE YOU GOING TO TRAILER YOUR TRACTOR? MAKE SURE YOUR TRAILER AND VEHICLE CAN ACCOMMODATE
*CONSIDER OVERHEAD HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS, INDOOR STORAGE SPACE, OUTDOOR COVERINGS
*DO YOU REALLY NEED A BACKHOE? IF YOU HAVE ONE OR TWO PROJECTS, THEN CONSIDER A MINI EXCAVATOR! SAVE LOTS OF MONEY IN THE LONG RUN!
*DO YOU WANT A CAB WITH AIR CONDITIONING? ONLY CERTAIN SIZE TRACTORS OFFER THIS OPTION!
*DO YOU HAVE SIZE RESTRICTIONS SUCH AS GETTING THROUGH A GATE, GETTING INTO BARN STALLS, GETTING UNDER THE DOOR OF YOUR BARN, ETC?

Like how you said get (Horse POWER) out of your brain. With the (DEF) being put on higher HP tractors, the OWNER needs to understand that anti pollution stuff. Do you understand the ( Regeneration system) if you want the higher (HP) the (Regen) is NOT a big deal. It just needs to be understood in the OWNERS brain. Like you so Brilliantly said. Get (HP) out of your way, when making a purchase. So many NEW small tractors are under that (DEF) requirements

Some of the other things that others might not think of are third function on front, position or draft control on the back (1023E has neither), and even three point hydraulic tilt etc. Anyhow, keep filming!

Really appreciate all the time and afford you put into your channel. I’ve been a long time subscriber and a big fan. I’m looking to get a 1025r but I’m interested in the Mauser Cab and there isn’t a lot of KZread content on it. I’m specifically looking for additional width and hight it adds, the cons to having it (pros are obvious I think), limitations it may have to the tractor (backhoe?? I don’t think you can...), can the doors doors (4) be removed, can you wire fans and lights Into the cab without messing up the weatherproofing/ headliner, a.c.?, and the overall quality on the cab in terms of material, shaky-ness, durability, and overall function. I know it’s a lot but thought it could be a good topic and it’s a topic i often look for on KZread. In your older videos I’ve seen a couple you’ve had but not any recently. Thanks for your content and god bless 👍.

I do think there are times to specify horsepower. I use my tiller in heavy clay soils through a gate which means that when looking at a tiller that cuts a tractor's track often you need to go up from base horsepower to run the tiller that width. Otherwise it never shows up but when your tiller pulls the rpm down and you cannot slow down more you are forced to raise out and till slow. Bit more HP and you can power through. Only other thing is I have tried to use the tractor to run certain stationary implements and you need more HP for things like PTO generators. How much depends how big of an electric generator you want to run. But my next tractor will be bigger HP so I can run a bigger generator

If you haven’t done a in-depth video on trailers, that would be worth making. Knowing the weight of the tractor your about to buy is absolutely necessary if you’re planning to haul it around. Trailer ratings, single axle, double axle, trailer brakes, no trailer brakes, length, rails or no rails, deck-over style, towing weight, trailer weight, tongue weight ratings, standard hitch tongue style or fifth wheel style. A lot of people that are getting into tractor ownership have no idea about these ratings and the importance of not cutting corners when towing tractors. Great vid 👍🏼

One big thing to keep in mind is whether or not you want a wood chipper. The 8" wood chipper that I want cannot run on the 21 PTO hp of my tractor. No, I will never want to chip 8" wood, but a large chipper is much preferable to a smaller one even for small branches because of the extra work needed to trim down bushy brush for smaller ones. I got exasperated after about 30 years of my 3" Super Tomahawk, and am now running a 5" chipper shredder off of my tractor. I don't think I ever chip anything over 4 inches or so, but the amount of work I can get done with the 5" compared to the little 8hp Tomahawk is enormous. Basically, you can't run a 5" chipper off of a subcompact, and my 21 PTO hp is really minimal for that duty. I would recommend anyone wanting to run a chipper or chipper/shredder to get at least 25 hp at the PTO, with 30 being better for 5". You need 40 PTO hp for the 8 inch unit I was interested in. An 8" chipper basically requires about 4x the power of a 4 inch, and about 6-7x what is needed for a 3 inch.

Realistically at 10:25R is going to do pretty much everything I would ever need but I’m sure a month later I would want something bigger to do the same thing just a little faster. Lol. So...is it better to have a bigger loader than the tractor can handle, or more tractor and a smaller loader? Many vids show a garden tractor with an aftermarket loader but the tractor can't push much dirt/gravel...same with bigger tractors with bigger loaders. Would it make sense to have a smaller loader on a bigger tractor to maximize efficiency?

  • @williamvannice9012

I'm no expert or anything but a larger loader with a smaller tractor sounds like a good way to shorten the life if the machine and a smaller loader with a bigger tractor doesn't sound very efficient. For the best efficiency you should have the correct size loader.

A question I've got a John Deere 3520 I know that they come with cabs would you say it's feasible or something that you might would do to get the John Deere cab and get it installed I know that a lot of changes would have to be made because right now it's obviously a open cab and put it to where it came as a factory cab because as far as I know this series come with a factory cab 3520 John Deere compact I'm sure it'll probably be kind of expensive but would like to hear you thoughts on it it can't be no more expensive than buying a whole another tractor just to get the cab when I've already got a tractor and I can put the money in it and put a cab on it with air conditioning stuff as I'm getting older the summer seem to be getting more and more hotter to me so just your thoughts on that if you get a chance to go over something like this I'd appreciate it thank you God bless

Yeah, she's been through a lot the last couple months. It all started shortly after she got her Rabies shot. Had a real bad reaction and I guess she had a Lymes disease flare up (causes lameness) and also an immune-related arthritic condition come on. Long story short, she's doing way better than she had been, but they now believe she might have partially torn a ligament trying to over-compensate. So, she's out of the woods, but may need surgery to repair the damage. We'll find out soon on that.

Anyone looking for a deer should look at Tym. 26hp tym compares to a 3 series deer. For $15,000 Or a 39hp Tym compares to a deer 4 series for $20,000. 6 year warranty drive line. Like to see some real comparisons. Deer hold there value i know but they start out 10,000 more. ?

Tym makes alot of tractors for different companies, Branson, Rural King, Ls etc.. The Tym 26hp at $15k is only 3-4K cheaper then then the 3025E. A big factor is Deere offers a true 0% financing on new, so when you factor in interest paid on a TYM vs a deere at 0% which one is more expensive??

@@phillipstough8946 the loader performance of the deer does not match the Tym. I paid cash for my machine so no intrest. I have 2 deers I bought new. Deer is good company to deal with. They are over priced in the small tractor's for what you get. Your paying for a good dealer most times. If money is not an option stay with deer.

@@phillipstough8946 that is what brought me to TYM (T264), the value. I could get more for less. 👍🙂 I have owned them all, even Cub Cadet which I still have some of, TYM has been great. Love that Kukje engine also. 🙂

@@phillipstough8946 LS makes LS . But LS does make most of new Holland up to about 60hp . TYM used to make Rural King , but I believe they had a falling out . That's why you don't even see them on the Stores Lots anymore.

@@phillipstough8946 Very good point on the finance of the interest as opposed to the 0% on a deere. Been thinking about going deere on a larger model with all the bells and whistles over my current LS.
