How to Pick the BEST Watermelon (from grocery store)

We bought over 500 lbs of watermelon to learn how to pick the best watermelon from the grocery store. With the help of our friends, science, and the experimental method, we discovered some delicious results!
We tried all of the most common techniques, including orange field spots, brown stems vs. green stems, heaviness per size, striping colors, and of course... the watermelon knocking technique.
Then we threw a watermelon party where a bunch of our friends help us with a blind watermelon tasting experiment. We were able to link the tasting results to the recorded picking techniques by correlating the data.
Here's the BEST watermelon picking technique recommendation, based on our specific watermelon testing and tasting data...
** spoiler alert **
1. Pick smaller more regular melons
2. Avoid melons with noticable soft spots or browning in the field scrapes or blemishes.
3. Start knocking!

As a drummer, I appreciate that picking the watermelon that sounds most like a drum is a verifiable technique!

I am a 60 year old mechanical engineer and have been a pretty good watermelon picker for many years. I have things I look for to indicate sweetness but have always thought that the "thump" is the only indicator if the flesh was firm and not over ripe or cracked inside. Cracks should deaden the sound. I have a fairly good ear when it comes to music and I look for a melon that "rings" or resonates really well when thumped. I loved your video demonstrating that with data. Awesome video! :)

You have to take into consideration where the melons are from, how they are kept in the store etc whole bin could be good or bad depending on season and grow location etc

I wonder if these factors vary among watermelon varieties

Yea, I thought about that. Lots of smaller, organic watermelons don't have field spots at all for example. I purposefully chose all of the same type to limit the number of variables in the experiment.

Lol literally the technique i do😂 plus its more guaranteed with mini watermelon. I stop buying huge watermelon because my family can't finish it in one go. Also, if its bad then money wasted. Mini watermelon are just perfect. 1 mini gives 4 servings❤
