How to Know if Watermelon is Ripe - Proven Methods [TURN ON SUBTITLES]

Ойын-сауық

Just a little fun!
Before you comment: Yes, I know the music is very loud in comparison to the voices. This is a now five-year-old video, and I definitely have learned and grown since this! Please turn subtitles on to understand us better!
UPDATED VERSION (tried to make it easier to listen to): • [AUDIO UPDATED] How to...
Stacy Lyn Harris shares the "how to's" of picking out the perfect watermelon. She and her gardening "expert," Forrest, do some experiments to determine what are wives tales and what is the reality when choosing a ripe watermelon. Don't forget to visit www.StacyLynHarris.com for the blog post!

Stacy.... Even though I'm not american, I can understand what you are saying above the music. I'm not sure what reason the others have for not being able to hear you... :) I've heard many other videos with music much louder than yours, though in the long run it's definitely best to have just speech rather than music anyway. As you have now found out lols. BUT it wasn't that annoying for me at all and you were easy to understand for me...!!!

Stacy Lyn Harris it’s unfortunate that the raw vid isn’t available anymore. Personally I wouldn’t have added the music, but that’s my opinion. Others like it... I must say, that the idea on “scientifically” choosing/evaluating the “goodness” of a watermelon is intriguing/interesting. I’m just at an age where my hearing gets conflicted when there’s music and talk going on at the same time and it ends up as tone-salad; hardly able to tell what is what...

  • @garivera15

I can't for the life of me understand why it's necessary to add music to a video. It's usually too loud and just as in the case of this video it sounds like you're trying to talk over the music to be heard...and I'd like to hear what you're trying to teach but I can't and won't turn up the music to try and hear you speak louder. So I suggest next time you put a video together skip the music and just teach from your heart. I could only take 36 seconds of unnecessary music and I had to stop and type (instead).

Lol like isn’t this video supposed to be instructional/informative? How is anyone supposed to learn anything if they can’t even hear what you’re saying? So annoying

Mainly 90% is the how the batch of watermelons are overall. I have worked 40 years in the business and if a bin comes in with good melons they are all usually good or all usually bad. The only empirically scientific way to get a better melon is to hit one side and put you hand on the other side feeling for a vibration, or a hollow sound. This is an indicator that the inside is crisp, crunchy and not mushy or over ripe. The down side is it only prevents you from buying a bad one but crisp doesn't mean it will be red ripe. But you now have increased your odds to buy an edible melon. Look for melons that don't have a green stem. A yellow bottom means the melon got good sunlight. That's the best you can do other than ask how they are coming in:)

Good Lord people. They never claimed to be doing a scientifically accurate lab experiment. They were just having fun. If you want a video of the same melons, different sized melons, melons with their own forks, control melons, etc... then do your own experiment. She even put the word prove in quotations to suggest it wasn't really proof, and was subjective. Also, I heard her fine over the music. I do agree that I couldn't see the chart, but they did very well at explaining everything they put on the chart so there really was no need for me to see it with 100% clarity. Plus, I'm using a tiny phone screen so that could be my fault. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed watching.

It was the best I have watched, and very informative. The only request I have is a round up at the end. You should have given us a summary of your findings, and showed us the melon you picked with the reasons .

For a finale... you should have cut all those watermelons to show a more visual look what is inside. Also, the volume of the music is louder than your voice audio. Just my two cents.

Bee strikes and curly q's....v's on the stem....sugar bumps...don't know what any of that means, or looks like. Does this apply to store-bought melons?

That was really interesting. The watermelon is probably the hardest of melons to judge. I grow other types of melon which I either judge by the change in fragrance (as I enter the greenhouse, it can be overwhelming when ripe), some liquid coming from the stem or the pressure test. Others say about the tendril condition as an indicator. However, none of that helps with watermelon. You both did a comprehensive assessment there, but I was willing the straw test to be right! Thanks, guys!

People are complaining about the music, if you are using ear buds, the music is on one side & the other is dialogue. Just pull the right side bud out! VOILA! NO MUSIC !

The Sound Test gave the correct answer. One more traditional criteria is to observe the immature fruit remains less growth near its stem. The another method is to measure the "roundness" of the Watermelon overall or say more symmetric at top and at the bottom compared to the fruits of the same field.

Lol!!!! Too funny!!! I saw the video. Then read the comments. Had to go back and watch again to see (hear) what you all were talking about. Having worked in a noisy call center, I have learned to block unnecessary noise out. Didn't even realize there was music in the background as my brain deemed it UNNECESSARY.

Guess I didn’t have an issue with the music. Some people have to complain about something. Was a great experiment on determining how to select a melon. Only thing would be to do the sample taste first and rate them blindly. Sometimes seeing the data steers you toward the better rated melon. Thank you for this fun and helpful production...

Curious.. about the straw method. I seen the straw move before the test happened, his hand stopped it. I wonder, if he used a pinching motion of the straw, instead of the laying down the straw with two hands motion if the outcome would be different.

Just curious, did you all control for variety? Different varieties might have vastly different tastes, and was not sure if the aversion to specific melons was a result of that.
