They're very expensive as a material, but have you ever tried aqua duo oil paints? They're oil based paints that can be diluted/mixed/cleaned up with water alone. I have two from Holbien and they stay wet just a bit longer than regular oils, but beyond that I can't tell a difference between them and old fashioned oil paints. If you're looking for a solution to solventless painting, aqua duos could be a perfect fit

In order to properly layer oil, each layer has to be thicker then the layer you are working over. If you don't as it dries it cracks. Traditional oil painting is a 7 layer method and can take up to 65yrs to totally dry. The hear and now method used here will vary on dry times based on thickness of the layer of paint and could take upwards of 6 months to dry. Some of the muddy she is seeing is also based on both pigment load and the colors she is using. If a tube of paint is 2 pigments or more then it will muddy faster. and the more pigments used to create a tube of paint the faster it will muddy. I recommend only using any tubes with 3 pigments or more as its own and only lightened with white. There is no better medium for blending then oils. Acrylic is the best if you want to build layers. There are oil paints that can be mixed with water as a thinner, these are modified oils. Winsor&Newten makes it and they are a great alternative to having to use heavy chemicals. Though the water mixable oils can also be used with traditional oil paint mediums. Golden makes a slow dry acrylic that allows you to basically set your dry times so you can blend with out the fuss. They are called Golden Open acrylics and work well. In fact Golden is probably the best acrylic paint brand with Winsor&newton being a close second. Those are both pro grade so they can be a bit costly compared to student grade products such as the artist loft stuff. The main differences between pro grade and student grade can be minimal depending on brand. In acrylics its student grade either has a lower pigment load or a lesser binder and alot of multi pigment formulas to get certain colors rather then a single pigment for color. That being said none of those things should concern anyone on usefulness as the only thing to worry about there is color mixing with multi pigment colors.

OMG Kayla, what an inspiration you are!! I’ve always wanted to learn how to paint, but was never encouraged to pursue it as a kid - I’ll look more into your channel (already subscribed of course), but do you ever teach eager folks like me? I’d love to be one of your students! ❤

Aww thank you so much! I’ve never taught actual painting classes (besides simple paint & sips), but maybe I can start considering what that would look like! I’ll be sure to post if I ever start doing something like that. 😀

Have you ever worked with Gamsol as a solvent? It's truly odorless, but if you happen to have a catastrophe (I did, dumped the whole jar on myself) it cleans up very well, and evaporates without fumigating your workspace (and it won't send you to the ER if you get covered in it)

Sketch black and white or pastels Water color Acrylic Oil for the pros . Could that be a road to explore the talent and build up that foundation? Taking in consideration of the drying time , blending and what not.
