I owe you a debt of gratitude. Just before this video came out. I was in a fight for my life. I had stage 4 head and neck cancer. Your easy and insightful teaching. Allowed me to learn how to paint. I could somewhat draw but wanted to paint what I have witnessed. I am prior Coast Gaurd and sailed the Bearing Sea. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You help me turn off what was and allowed me to just be in the moment. Without a worry. You are in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you and God bless.

Just spent the evening having a cracking at this on a small scale. It works really well though I would say I am only a small step in the right direction. It was wiered that suddenly it started looking watery. So a few more goes but a massive thanks Joe for putting it out there. I hope you get the respect you deserve not just as a great painter but an outstanding teacher.

its about where your light source is from...ie where the sunlight (for example) is and where the shadows/shade will naturally fall. It just takes practice. The amount of times I have just given up...and dumped the project in the Bin :) I am improving now...Clouds were another problem I had, but they are improving. Love Muraljoes style though. Incredible work

to be able to "see" the shadow, start by drawing stones and mountains!! it really helped me as exercises. Once u get it rolling, everything will go by itself!! U ll start to "see" where the right place and shape of a shadow is. ( an even easier start, is playing with 3 D geometric forms, by drawing them)

Hi Joe, surfing through the internet, I stumbled onto your lessons of how to paint water, sky, etc. ! Holy Smokes! Thank you so very much. You keep the lessons simple and straight to the point, and they have helped me a great deal. I haven't painted in some months now and I must say, it really has me down. Following your lesson's however, has inspired me to pick up my brush again and start painting, and so I have to say, "I owe you buddy"! It's so good to be back at work again! After all, what's better than creating beautiful works of art. In my book nothing! And so, once again, I thank you for the lessons, the inspiration and the motivation! You've made at least one person very happy in this often crazy world, and for that pal, I sincerely thank you! Keep up the great works, as they bring more joy to the world than you may be aware of. God Bless!

this is art. I can't get into modern art. this seemed like it takes actual skill, time and effort rather than just drawing a circle with a black line through the whole thing and then paint splatter chucked on to the canvas. this, this is far better.

Enceladus TheMistGiant Thats vague some art can be a little odd but the thing about art is it is an open minded topic people like van gogh, marcel duchamp and even pablo picasso who influenced expressionism are early stages of what modern art is trying to achieve. Things such as the thick lines are alot more interesting than the pieces id say give van gogh 30 more years and his work would of become just marks and these do take time and thought you just have to be more open minded about it all its evolving to more than just recordings as it dates back to 5000yrs ago its more internal and expressive than just external features nowadays however i have to agree this is lovely to see but its just a tutorial on how to paint waves realistically nowadays this wouldnt be a high priced piece because its just visual not much more to it.

The idea of an artist is how good can he (or she) can take an idea and put in a way we can relate on, be amazed, the closer to the artist original tought we are, the better the artist and that doesnt ncesarely means realism. this isnt jsut with painting, and not even with graphics sometimes (think aboutperspective art and music). The "vogue" (no, improbably wrong. but you get the idea. those overpriced and overthinked pieces of - debatalbe art) art and all that new things rely on exactly the contraire thing. They make the post simply rhing, sometimes is an netirely nonsense, but, suggestion and the human brain per se are really really good at makings thing up, to the point, to find the deep (fry) answers of all on a black dot who is just that: a black dot. you now are not influenced by nothing, so theress only you triying to find a meaning, and that make you the real artist there. Most, nevertheless, are heavily infuenced by notorious artist and critics (and price tags) and thing that only because is there, it means is art...that bothers me, a lot. (sorry for bad english)

  • @SBVCP

    @SBVCP

dont get me wrong, i do agree that without a backstory, a deeper layer hidden there it would be just a nice drawing...but that "black dot" (for example, not specifically it) is just taked to an extreme.

  • @Coatez2000

SaimonVcp completely understood, prices are just how valued the artwork is alot of the time big named artists can sell there slowzier work for big bucks because of the artist behind it and knowing full well the previous works and everything prior to this work how he thinks and approaches his work it is just an honour to have a part of them so sometimes the masterpieces that arent masterpieces can gain fame also even without a backstory!

Being able to just make things look realistic is really not that hard, and people who use that as their measure just don't get what art really is. Besides we've had cameras to make realistic images now for many years, to paint that way is redundant. also you might not realize it but most good abstract artists can do realism, but they're bored by it and have moved on to other things.

I am a bit confused. I subscribed to your video on how to paint beach, in which you painted the water darker and darker as it moves towards the horizon. But in this video, you paint it the opposite way.

I know this is an old comment, but just in case you were still looking to know why: On this picture, you can assume you're in open water, and it's all deep, so the water is all evenly dark. However, the sky is reflected on it, and since the higher up, the darker the sky (the sky is lighter near the horizon line) the same can be seen in reverse, on the water's reflection, because the bottom of the water (closest to the viewer) is the reflection of the top of the sky (which is also closest to the viewer) while the top of the water, and bottom of the sky, reflect each other (both farthest from the viewer) It can be hard to realize that for this picture tho, since he didn't actually draw the sky, but this is a general rule you learn in painting. HOWEVER On a beach picture, closer to the viewer (the bottom of the water) is also closer to the shore, which means the water is getting progressively shallower. Shallow water isn't as dark as deep water, so while reflections in the water might follow the rules I said earlier, the water itself would follow the opposite, and be lighter towards the bottom, and darker towards the top!

You have a talent for taking what seems like should be a simple thing, that is actually sometimes very difficult, and actually making it a simple thing. Water here, flames in another video. Well done!

I'll continue to check out more of your tutorials. In this one, I couldn't imagine you'd get too far with sloppy, thick lines of color, but you got it going on! Thanks!

Looks very therapeutic, but does not leave much at the end for the viewers imagination. I started painting exactly this way 45 years ago, yet soon realized that the old saying "Less is more" should always apply in a balanced subject, even if it is aimed at realism. Maybe if you put a little of your heart into the process or the technique, yet the end result is not something that I could now live with. You would be better taking a photo, yet can understand that you enjoy the process. Knowing when to stop is hard after all. Try using your heart more, you can keep the colours and the tonality, yet use your own feelings and paint with your emotions instead. Learn to use the large brush more and only leave 10% of the image to detail if you need it. Suggest rather than portray. Good luck

Stephen Nicholas You do realise that some people don't enjoy the look at large chunky marks in their painting right? And some people really love detail work There's giving advice and then there's trying to push your style on someone else and unfortunately you are entirely the latter

Art is subjective, who are you to say how he should paint, I find it lovely and absolutely gorgeous just the way it is. why do you think your way is THE WAY? He is painting his way, and to think that all should do so your way is ridiculous! Sure looks like he felt something to me.........I LOVE IT. I sure hope he ignores dumb asses like you whom think there is only one way and that is their way. Oh and I agree, I would rather see this than some chunky impressionist crap. Go paint a dot and leave this talented man alone.
