How To Paint Magneto Helmet Cosplay Tutorial

Ойын-сауық

I have 2 sizes available! For 23 inch and 25 inch circumference heads! E-mail me at gallacmic@yahoo.com if you have any questions.
In this video I was using a different brand of resin that had high amounts of air bubbles when it cured. I have since switched to a higher quality resin that has almost no air bubbles at all and NO WRINKLES!!! Much easier to prep and paint now!
Use "Testors purplicious" for the purple trim!!
My helmet was featured in "Magentos Day Off" by Unhinged Comedy - • Magneto's Day Off
You may have noticed a douche bag on Ebay called "gcfxcosplay" has made a mold off my helmet and is now selling them! Please do not support this thief!! He has made over $1500 recasting off my sculpt!
This is how to prep and paint a cosplay helmet with a professional finish while only using spray paint. This video goes through the process step by step from start to finish.
Note: The Rustoleum Chrome paint used for the trim in this video has shown to have issues curing so its probably best to stick with the Krylon Brilliant Silver or some other brand. Also here is the link for the sander I used. Use a coupon and get it for $14 bucks!

So you don't have to watch the whole video 1st primer coat Sit for 5-7 min (he waited 2 hours and sealed off imperfections) 2nd primer coat, 10-15 min (he waited 2 hours and sealed off imperfections) (he had a 3rd coat of primer since he did imperfections) 1st paint coat paint 5-7 minutes 2nd paint coat nice wet 5-7 minutes 3rd paint coat nice wet/mist. 15 minutes 1st clear coat light/mist 5 minutes 2nd clear coat heavier/mist 5-7 minutes 3rd clear coat what you see is what you get. Has to cure for 48 hours before you work with it. For second paint after you mask it off you do one coat and take off the masking tape.

Thanks. I bought one of these helmets from you about a year ago and it's been sitting on my desk because I've been struggling with the paint job. This really helps a lot.

You are a Great Master Technician Costumer! And with your Seamstress Mom, you two are a Dynamic Duo! Thanks for this splendid Paint Technique Upload. I'm sure others here may have reminded you to wear a respirator every once in a while, but I confess I rarely think to put one on myself. Thanks to you, I may just resume repairing & repainting my ANH Vader Helmet. It won't be as shiny as your Magneto Helmet, but you've totally schooled me on the sanding and primer process.

Thanks for sharing this video, it is very helpful. I bought a finished helmet from you quite some time ago and it was about time for a repaint so I gave it a go. I had an issue with the tack cloth shedding onto the helmet. I tried 3 different tack cloths, all brand new (though they had been stored for a while), but it was shedding on the helmet, no matter how lightly I ran it across. I ended up using a lint roller to help remove the fibers of the cloth, but I fear that might have roughed up the paint more than I'd like. I think I went too light on the clear coat as well, but with the issues on the tack cloth, I'm not sure if that's to blame. After a day, I didn't think it looked good at all, but after another day the clear coat seems to have cured more and the helmet overall looks pretty good. I think I might try to apply another clear coat to it and see if that does the trick. The instructions on the Clear coat say it's ok to reapply coats at anytime so I figured I'd give it a go. Anyway, I was wondering if you noticed fibers coming off the tack cloth as well and if so, how to best handle those. I.e. ignore them, pick them off with tweezers, lint roll, etc.

Question, when you paint your helmets. Where do you keep them while letting the paint cure or set, especially for the clear coat during its 48 hour wait? Surely you want to try and avoid dust and debris that might find its way onto the helmet? Do you just leave it in the garage or move it into your home or keep it on the back porch? That bit of info would help a noob like me. 30:07

Here was my concern about the helmet being painted in chrome. I tried using it and it only came out looking. Of course, to my part, it was on a 3d printed test piece and it wasn't prepped. Anyway after you sprayed the chrome, you just left it alone? No other protection?

The purple is called "Testors purpl-icious" I got from Hobby lobby. The purple is a one stage paint meaning it has clear coat mixed in already so it goes on plenty glossy. The silver can says not to clear coat it. I tried it before and it makes it look like crap.

Couple of quick questions: 1) When painting the classic with the Dupli-color red, do you also use the Dupli-color clear coat or do you use the Rustoleum clear coat? 2) With the Testors Purplicious do you still just use 1 coat and/or do you clear coat the purple? Thanks! Love your work.

  • @MakeItMike

Guy Baker 1) I use the rustoleum clear over the duplicolor red. 2) I do not clear coat the purple. It is a one stage paint meaning it has clear coat in it. I just do one wet coat and BAM its done.
