Absolutely beautiful!
I learn so much from each of your videos. I like that you keep reminding us to keep it simple and to really look at something and not use our memory. I find that very helpful. Thanks again.

Just lovely, James. I’m trying to let go and learn to paint loosely; watching you is revelatory. Sadly I’m quite good at making a rod for my back, as you say! Letting go and painting in your fashion looks so much more FUN! The way you bring colours together is always beautiful. Thank you - and cheers from British Columbia, Canada.

Hi Carol, Glad you enjoyed that painting. There’s something magical about painting simply and removing detail. When I look at flowers, my first impression is being overwhelmed by the complexity of it and the endless detail. I find squinting my eyes helpful just to try to simplify things and only paint what is needed What I find really interesting is that a very detail painting which took 10 hours isn’t any better than something that took an hour. I look forward to hearing how your painting goes. Best wishes, James
Beautiful, my kind of subject. Interesting negative painting, I love your commentary. Thanks. Jo in France 🇫🇷

Thank you so much for this! I have a cutting garden and try so hard to capture some of the flowers. I did my own painting after watching yours and it turned out pretty good!

My pleasure. One of the interesting things about painting flowers is that when you look at them they are incredibly complicated. For me trying to paint simply an interpret the flowers is the trick. Glad you had a go at it and I’m pleased that it came out well. Best wishes, James

I love the manner in which you paint. I am finding it inspiring and liberating, paintings look fluid, with beautiful strokes that suggest the various elements in it. This way, you allow the viewer to interact with your paintings, rather than over feeding them. P.S. I love Scotland too 👍
Very nice. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your beautiful artistry

Fresh that’s an interesting word for a painting keep it fresh. The variety of your yellows is fascinating it’s amazing how the background throws everything into relief. Nice to see you use plenty of water not easy to get that right all the time. A very attractive bunch of flowers - thank you James.

Hi Robert, There were a lot of yellows in that flower. I was interested to see how it took up my whole Palette. I do like using a lot of water in my mixes. I think it flows better than thicker paint. Glad you enjoyed it. Best wishes, James

Hi Stella, My pleasure. Flowers are quite an intense thing to paint, but I think the impressionistic way makes it a little bit more fun and a lot quicker without losing quality. Good luck with the Imp expressionistic way I look forward to hearing how it goes. Wishes James

Hi Noel, Glad you enjoyed the chat. I hope you enjoy painting your flower. If you can keep it simple and not paint with too much detail, that will make a good start. Thanks, James
Thank you , James. Lovely painting.....I have had a book of watercolor flowers for years from Charles Reid and I love the impressionistic flowers. I gave it a go while watching you just to see what happened....too overworked but now I will try again on good paper😊 and think more carefully

Hi Kalaysia, My pleasure glad you like the painting. Charles Reid was really great at flowers. He was really good at the single layer of paint. It’s very easy to overwork flowers as there is an overwhelming amount of detail. If you can just try and keep it simple and that would help. Good people make difference as well. Best wishes, James

6:23 Try W&N’s Transparent Orange, it’s not opaque and rather rich. I think it’s lightfast, but I’m not sure. It’s a pyrrol pigment.

Transparent orange is a game changer, for mixing and using alone. It’s really transparent and doesn’t make mud. WN and DSmith versions are exactly the same pigment. It is lightfast.
