Painting Buildings in Watercolour on a Beautiful Sunny Day

I show you how to paint a house in a simple impressionist style, plein air.
These lovely cottages are in the picturesque village of Pittenweem, Fife, Scotland.
Here is the video of my usual watercolour plein air equipment

We’re so fortunate to learn from your expertise and wisdom. “It’s good enough” is just what I need to counter the perfectionism I fall into with my painting. Thank you!

Hi Michael I’m glad you’re enjoying my video so much! Perfectionism is a problem in Watercolour. The medium doesn’t like to be pushed around too much as it loses its magic. Good enough is a good way to counter it. Best wishes, James

Your partner is right, with the white and blue it does look like Greece! Until you look up to the roofs! Very pretty place.

Hi Carol, I’m glad you’ve picked that one up. I’m always trying to simplify the scene and to pick up the essence of it. I only want to see the masses rather than the details. it has the benefit of being a fun way to paint as well. Hope your painting is going well. Best wishes, James

I spent years painting botanicals in great detail, it's hard for me not to paint every brick if I paint a scene like this! 😂 Watching your videos is a great help. Jo in France 🇫🇷

Hi Libellula , Botanical paintings are amazing the detail is incredible. It is quite a big change to paint this way. It’s a very different way of seeing trying to express as much as possible with the least effort. It has a huge benefit of being able to paint a Watercolour in one session. Let me know how your efforts go. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, James

Hi James, I enjoyed watching your video, again I'm picking up snippets about your style of painting in watercolours. Your calm commentary explaining your reasons of strokes and colours is so good. Thank you for your time and effort, I'm behind watching your videos. My sketches in Mallorca were bad but I tried! I also noticed how the scene colours changed so quickly with the changes in light, so have become more observate Steve

Hi Steve Good to hear from you again. Glad you’re enjoying the videos. I haven’t heard from you from you for a while. I was wondering how your sketching had been going on holiday. I think when you draw from life, you do notice more. Maybe doing a quick 10 minute sketch every day would be the way to improve Best wishes, James

Hi Mary, Glad you enjoy seeing places we go to. Travelling and finding a place to paint is such an important part of picture making. Keeping it simple and therefore stopping fiddling is such an important thing to do. I think it’s a way of thinking, seeing the subject as a mass rather than a detail. Keep practising it and you will get better Best wishes, James

You need an umbrella, James, or a shade to shield your paper. There's some very lightweight, simple constructions on YT. Great videos. Learning a lot from your process.

Hi Dave, Glad you enjoyed the video and more importantly, learnt something. We do have a big umbrella, but usually I paint in the landscape and I can spike it into the ground. I bought a new base now for setting it up on pavements. I’ll have a look though at other options on KZread. Thanks for that. Best wishes, James

Have you done a video on your Plein air set up please ? Does the hardboard with the hole in it stop paint from getting under it, and leave a white edge like masking tape? Thanks Jo in France 🇫🇷

Hi again, I hope you’ve managed to find my planner set up. It does mainly stop the paint from going underneath like masking tape but not quite, however I do like the effect, it’s much more like a deckled edge and sometimes it does Leak a bit, however I enjoy that. Best wishes, James
