For what it’s worth, of all the tutorials I’ve seen for diseased, or plague-worshipper skin, yours has a lot of both demonstration of techniques, as well as theory behind why those steps are being taken. My question: how would you do this effect for non-pale, or non Caucasian skin tones?

  • @VinceVenturella

    @VinceVenturella

    2 жыл бұрын

Great question, so if you're doing darker skin tones, the same rules still apply, add in that yellow, especially in the highlights, and make some spots of red/pink to show the buboes. Depending on how dark the skin tone, you can also still use the purples to great effect.

Great video bud as always. Illness and diseased models are some of my favourites tbh. It's why I love nurgle they are just so different alot of creativity goes into them and they can break all the rules of how something can and should look. Painting them is such a joy and it also means you can have a huge variety. One way I would do this with even plauge walkers was if have all my colours I was going to use for skin different greens, yellows some reds and purples and I'd paint them differently every couple of so, or even if I would paint some of them mostly the same maybe I would finish them off with different dry brush and filter wash and it really makes them standout without looking at a mono colour army as you would see alot with Daemon armies.

Fun fact about adding green to skin tones.. Quantity is key, adding some gives you hyper realistic tones as skin naturally has a green tinge to it and it's often whats missing when you see an odd shade of flesh that reminds you of a CPR dummy. Same with blues, you got veins after all. All these are in miniscule quantities but something that makes a giant difference. Ofc, quantity is key and adding more you'll get the sickly tones.

Looked down during the initial steps to make some more sprue goo, I look up, and it's a completely different model that has distinct and realistic buboes. I had to go back and actually watch (as I do if this ever happens). Great to see as I need to paint my Blightkings. I have a lot of Nurgle daemon flesh (plaguebearers, plague drones, and GUO to paint) and mortal flesh to paint so this was perfectly timed. I will have to go back and see your vampire flesh vids for the other flesh I have to paint. So much flesh... Love that you use a rather "easy" to access painting technique here to help illustrate everything doesn't have to be precise layering or wet blending or any other number of more difficult techniques for a realistic look. Keep up the awesome work and love the intro to this video. You are definitely upping the ante and I'm sure we all enjoy it; I know I do.

Really cool video Vince - thanks for sharing! Was just reviewing your (un)dead skin last week to get some ideas on how to paint an Escher Death Maiden - reanimated body with venom blood. Thinking of going for something in between your zombie flesh and this one, starting off from a dark purple base + zenithal and then add in green and yellow tones but then top it with cold highlights to get a pale, walking dead feel. Have you ever done one?

    1) Sure, though I generally like adding a little more pink and purple to them, to make it seem more like monstrous skin. 2) As above, but you could also really push the yellows, as it's a monster, people won't bring the same expectations.

I'm not sure there's a specific definition for futzing, but if I tried to explain it, as I understand it, it's: The application of paint in a non-mechanistic manner. Rather than trying to follow a component based process (e.g. apply skin colour 1 to X, Y, Z parts, apply skin colour 2 to X, Y parts, apply skin colour 3 to X part = skin) (which is super useful for doing the initial groundwork) Futzing allows you to 'futz' with the component process and give it more... context? Like you are combining the mini as it is with the basic premise of the paint scheme to give one whole thing, rather than have a mini + a paint scheme on top. This then gives me the way I've been trying to use it (certainly not the only or best way!): You start with an broad idea of the feeling you want skin to evoke, you look at what you have very critically, you put a bunch of paints on your palette, and then play with the colours, using different techniques until it feels right. It's impossible to pin down any 'one' thing that it does. You can still standardise it to a degree, but you standardise the process as a collection of techniques, rather than a set of components. I guess compare it with baking a cake. Once you've followed the outline of the recipe and it's come out of the oven there's still more that affects the experience of eating the cake. How long you let it stand, whether you decorate it, how you present it, what environment it gets eaten in, the mood of the person when they are eating etc (the list is endless). Unless you do the recipe right, there's only so much you can improve a poor cake. But if you follow the recipe ok, you can then take a solid cake and elevate it by making it a more identifiable thing in any particular way by adding to another part of the overall experience. I.e. A basic chocolate cake is good to eat. A basic chocolate cake with some writing on adds to the personal 'region' of the experience of eating cake and is good to eat. A basic chocolate cake made into a 40k mini is totally novel and unique in a way that changes the purpose of the cake so that it's such an identifiable experience it's almost more like art, and is good to eat. Futzing is the second part of this. Adding to the mini in a way that fits with what you are attempting to get the mini to express. Not sure if that makes sense, likely not a good explanation :D. But if you can get behind the idea of futzing it really changes how one sees the model (or at least it's certainly changed how I see it). Worth doing some more looking into.

You said to try different colors for diseased flesh and i wanted to paint my Maggotkin with a incredibly sever case of Cyanosis (think blue in the face. do NOT google) on the extremities it is light blue all the way to a purple in the worse spots. if i painting myself i was thinking of just drying brushing blues and purple from worse hit to least over the flesh tone (i was thinking pallid flesh or grey), however with this vide i'm wondering is it better to mix a color with flesh tone then do glazing. What do you think would be the simplest method to use for this type effect. for arms it would be fingers to upper arm. the fingers would be darkest blue or purple going lighter as an example.

I'd mix a little in, then move to full on glazing down to the extremities.

I refuse to play Baron Harkonnen in the Dune board game because I just can’t look at him all game - he is gross inside and out. Definitely a good call for reference material *shudder*

I need a tutorial on doing "scorched earth" type bases. Blasted, burnt, ashes.

Like, how scorched, if completely schorched, it's just black texture with a grey drybrush. ;)

@@VinceVenturella I mean I tried something like that but I don't feel like it ever came out quite right. They also don't know that you want to go quite that scorch that have it pull off a truly real looking effect... But maybe I'm wrong.

  • @VinceVenturella

@@xenoterracide No you're right, it won't read, because there is no context. We only recognize a scorch by the "not scorched" things around it. It's just a pile of carbon ash. So ideally, you would have a "scorch line" or scorched area in that method, that would fade at the edges to brown and have a few spots of hot orange cinders, but then the rest is grey ash. Basically, take a charcoal grill, dump it on your lawn, paint that.

@@VinceVenturella Good analogy but... Even when I've tried to do it next to earth it hasn't come out anywhere nearly correct :'( I find basing especially difficult on smaller bases like 32 mm. Hence this being an idea for a video ;).

So Ice Yellow, Cold Yellow from Kimera, Hykey Yellow from Scale 75 - all of those are in the same area. But anything that looks like a bright white/yellow will get you in the space.
