How to Paint Birds 🦜 With Watercolor

Everything I've learned about painting watercolor birds in one video 🦜 with a special focus on color temperature (and how we can use warm and cool greens for a more realistic watercolor painting). Enjoy! 💜 REAL-TIME (normal speed) version of this video, along with extra commentary, black & white outlines, is available on my PATREON feed: / annabucciarelli

🎨 WATERCOLOR SUPPLIES:
PAPER: Arches Cold Pressed 140lbs 100% cotton paper block, 12 x 12 inches
BRUSHES: mostly Escoda Reserva in size #3, and Raphael synthetic size #0
🎨 PIGMENTS:
Please note, You only need 1 pigment for each color category. The rest is simply for fun - a stylistic choice where I extend my palette. Matching my pigments precisely is not essential to the success of your painting.
GREEN-ish YELLOW
I am using: Phthalo Yellow Green from DS. Alternatives: Mix Phthalo Green Yellow Shade with Hansa Yellow Light
BASE NATURAL GREENs
I am using: Hookers Green from DS and Sap Green from QOR. Alternatives: Mix Phthalo Green Yellow Shade or Phthalo Green Blue Shade with different proportions of Quinacridone Burned Orange and Nickel Azo Yellow.
COOL BLUE-ish GREENs
I am using: Phthalo Green Blue Shade from W&N and Phthalo Blue Green Shade from QOR. Alternatives: Use only Phthalo Blue Green Shade from any brand.
WARM YELLOW-ish GREEN
I am using: Olive Green from DS and Green Gold from QOR. Alternatives: Mix your own Olive Green by using French Ultramarine, Raw Sienna and Hansa Yellow Medium.
WARM REDS
I am using: Quinacridone Red QOR, Quinacridone Coral DS, and Winsor Orange Red Shade W&N (only on the eye). Alternatives: Stick to one warm or medium red of your choice. For darker red shadows on the beak simply add purple or blue to your red.
DARKs. I am using: Indigo DS and Perylene Green DS. Alternatives: Use only Indigo DS, or Payne's Gray DS, or Deep Sap Green DS. Use black only as a last resort
OPTIONAL: I am using: Dioxazine Purple QOR and Perylene Violet DS

Ahhh that was lovely and clear and relaxing. As a Canadian living in Texas I remember that feeling of being tired of WHITE and cold, so this vibrant painting is a good cure for winter blah! At least it is not melting grey slush… thank you for all the tips you add throughout your tutorials. Stay warm in snowy Toronto. Looking forward to the “parrot” tulip part of this. I smiled at your idea of putting a real parrot in there with them.

Thank you Alison!!! I am so glad you noticed the double parrot - I thought it may be a bit of an obscure play on words since there are no tulips where these parrots live, and that it would only make sense in my head 🥰 please send us some Texas sunshine - it’s really really snowy here since January (even by Toronto standards )

Thank you for sharing advanced techniques. This was sooooo lacking in watercolor tutorials on KZread and it gets old seeing the basics until one turns blue in the face. Your way of teaching is wonderful and makes the students feel that the teaching is one on one. I am not trying to discredit Skillshare but so many have tight finances and just enough time to learn a bit more. I was really hoping that intermediate to advanced wc tutorials would find their place here too. Please keep up the great tutorials. Your art is beautiful!

@@AnnaBucciarelli Well, I"m a native English speaker from London and currently do a little bit of teaching English where I live in Spain. I must say, I thought you were Canadian! Not only that, but you have a beautifully sounding voice that is calm and relaxed, which is very soothing on the ears! I saw a video of an interview you did for a Ukrainian news channel. The way you switched between the two languages was excellent. I'm fluent in Spanish, so I can appreciate the effort it takes to learn another language. But you have absolutely mastered the pronunciation of English, despite it not being your first language. It was very interesting to learn that some of your art skills come from ancient Ukrainian folk art traditions. Folk art is an important part of history and culture that unites people with their past, but also gives them a frame of reference to guide them through the present. It is also a great gift to share with other people and cultures. Long may you continue with your wonderful projects and I wish you a long, healthy and happy life for you and your family.

  • @AnnaBucciarelli

    @AnnaBucciarelli

    9 ай бұрын

Awww thank you 🧡 and i was JUST looking at toucans over the weekend thinking through potential layers so I know exactly what you are talking about 😊 I think the best thing is to use an underpainting of blue or turquoise (it’ll both or another hue depending on your reference ?) so once it’s dry, you can follow on top with black or indigo or pains gray, water it down around the highlights so the underpainting “shines through” and you have lots of room for capturing little details like feathers here and there. I did some of that on the darkest patches of the latest turkey (the one I just posted yesterday) Another method is to use granulating paints to create lots of texture but I’ve never tried any black or true black granulating brands so can’t recommend a specific one. I hope this helps. There is also an older black swan I have here on my channel that shows underpainting before black 😊
