How to Paint a Light Effect

James Gurney paints a snow-covered farm road using a limited palette of casein tube colors. He uses four methods to achieve an eye-catching light effect:
1. Mixing the paint on a gray palette surface
2. Priming the surface with a glowing “effect area”
3. Building up to a bright accent.
4. Creating a flare/glow with pastel.

I took about 30 minutes to watch this video i keep pushing the cursor back to see that transition between the underpainting and the almost instantaneous pop that he achieves by laying down lighter tones on the area with the 'raking' light (which is a term i just learned today). Fantastic work James, as usual

I'm mainly a pen & ink artist and a play around with watercolor from time to time, but the overall principles you discuss here are universal. We are ultimately looking at what the light is doing (and not doing) when we capture a scene. Very well explained! It always helps to hear a fellow artist explain the fundamentals in a way I've not quite heard before.

Stunning, as is every art video you post. I always get such a wonderful feeling of peace and serenity when seeing your paintings here and/or watching you create them. That's my favorite kind of art--something that gives me a sense of peace, serenity, awe, and wonder. It's great to see what you do technically, but it's even better to see the way you use that technical ability to create your own world within your painting and invite the viewer into that world--to touch the viewer's heart and soul.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful techniques Mr Gurney. I especially love that you are dabbling back into the casein. I probably don't have any intention to use casein.. I. Honestly have enough mediums at home lol. But that said its all relative knowledge one way or another. I am very intrigued by the focal point and how you lit this area with such intensity. That is pure genius. That's not about using the white so heavily, it's about getting your other values on key that the lightest light can be driven with warm tones and high white intensity without having to contend with anything else. You're fabulous. Every time.
