Fabulous crow! I LOVE Soft press paper! It makes me go Ahhhh, when pulling my brush along it! I found it when it was new... late 90s or early 2000s. I do hope you get well soon! Thanks for the tutorial! I love lamp black! It a was and such wonderful texture. I didn't start using it until I bought some Lunar Black and I realized it was made from lamp black.

You seem to have such a knack for deciding appropriate values and colors. Interpreting a subject is very difficult for me; I want to be too literal. The gate came out spectacularly well. Seeing how you handle this so skillfully makes me think a building/architectural piece would be a most welcome tutorial. Ravens are larger than crows. I live in the mountain of Western PA (gorgeous autumn foliage!) and we have very large crows here. But the raven I saw hiking the Grand Canyon in AZ could just about carry me away! How do you decide which few colors to use and how many to limit? For example, when do you decide between using violet vs. mixing it? We all have (too) many tubes of paint and it is so tempting to use too many and lose unity.

I absolutely love your paintings. I would say this beautiful bird is a Crow. 🙂 I just learned a couple neat ways to tell the difference between Crows and Ravens, if you don't have two together to differentiate the size ... a Crow's beak length is about the same diameter as their skull, whereas a Raven's is wider than their skull and Ravens have a mane of feathers, like a lion's mane. Crows do not have a mane. ❤

Crow, beak has me confused, when I see crows, verses the Raven that has a hook, but seen some crows with a bit of tip hook of a beak. Wonder is this is due to age from birth to get out of their shell, and loose as they age. Have not heard history saying much about age. Snowy owls turn white when about 7 years old. Ravens are the ones I see more color in feathers. Most crows I have seen are DARK, mainly because they are somewhat out of direct sun, and the pigments, even a raven would not show. Yours is on a fence, in direct light.so their Midnight colors are more likely to show. Your crow does not have the BIB of feathers a Raven has.
