I know this video is two years old. Yet..... I downloaded the GIMP 2.10.20 today and I had to set up the rawtherapee external editor. I forgot how to do it. I was searching for clues for a while. I came across this video and in seconds it was set again correctly. Thanks.

Installed darktable and gimp but cant load processed RAW image from Darktable into GIMP...

Just upgraded to gimp 2.10 and really appreciate you putting the custom command line for rawtherapee - I used your procedure and opened a dng image from RT into GIMP with no problems. Very much appreciated.

this is super helpful- thank you! My version of Darktable defaulted to a non-English language version. Any idea how to change to English? I did a web-search and the solutions involved steps that are beyond my computer knowledge or capabilities. Looking for a simple fix if you have one!

Lately, darktable 2.6.2 has been exporting to blank jpeg files. And when I attempt to reopen through GIMP, I get error messages. Can you please help me?

I was about to use RawTherapee but I didn't know what I was doing. I watched this video and didn't know you showed both RawTherapee and DarkTable so I just followed how to use DarkTable. I'm so glad I installed DarkTable because it seems to be way more responsive when adjusting settings a bit more. Also, it is slightly easier to get Raw files into GIMP than using RawTherapee. I just wonder why it needs another software to import the raw files.

I keep asking myself; after getting the perfect effects in raw therapee, would I want to download it to gimp? Can anyone answer that for me?

Hey Michael, I love the clarity of your presentation. I have downloaded and installed GIMP 2.10, cant find in GIMP preferences a place to nominate Darktable as my RAW editor. I ave tried having a Raw file open in DT and then shut it down, but it does not opem in Gimp. What am I missing here?

Does anyone know why DarkTable doesn't allow us to edit the values of our exposure adjustments with the numeric keypad? Gimp let's me type in the adjustment value I desire by clicking on the value box itself and then typing in my numeric value. Anyone have a solve for this?

I have installed darktable but when I opened a raw file there was a prompt that says to download rawtherapee or darktable

Hi! Thanks for the tutorial, one question though: is it possible to make gimp open photos in 32 bit precision by default? Or I have to do it manually every time? I am using rawtherapy and gimp combo.

In Photoshop there's a Camera Raw filter that lets you go back the the Camera Raw application. Is there a way in Gimp to go back to Darktable or Raw Therapy?

When I compare a raw (ARW) and JPEG image from the same shot (as stored on SD card in RAW+JPEG mode), I see that JPG has some lens correction applied to it. When I open the RAW file using DarkTable or RawTherapee, do they apply this correction, or I end up with uncorrected fisheye-like distortion?

I edit Nikon .nef files and found the same thing. As far as I can see, you must apply the lens correction manually to the raw file. I don't find this easy; it would be nice if this step could be automated.

If I'm correct I think it's a little misleading to title the video, 'How to open RAW images in GIMP' as what you need to do is open them in Darktable before exporting them to GIMP as a jpeg. Gimp cannot edit RAW files and I think this is confusing some people who ask why choose Darktable over GIMP, they are different beasts. Unless I've got it wrong!

Thanks for the vid, this has worked for me. I'm currently using Photoshop at £10 a month, my edits are usually quite minimal and I mostly only use Camera raw so I decided to look for a free program. Gimp looks like it might do the job for me. I have a question: In Photoshop we have Bridge; this allows us to view our raw images and choose which ones to open and work on: is there some way of doing this using Gimp and Darktable? Thanks for any help.

Since writing this I've discovered that you can upload folders in Darktable so that takes care of that. Now I just need to figure out how to get an image from Darktabe into Gimp after editing: as you mentioned: it's straightforward to open a raw file whilst in Gimp, it opens in Darktable, you edit it and close Darktable and your image arrived back in Gimp. So now the question is: when opening Darktable and uploading folders and editing pics; is there a way of sending them directly to Gimp? Or do I have to simply save my edited jpegs to a folder and then load that into Gimp? Maybe I'll discover this stuff as I go along, thanks.

The GIMP and Darktable Integration certainly isn't perfect. When editing multiple images, the closing down of Darktable won't open all the images into GIMP. It will only open the last image into GIMP. I am not sure how to remedy this, or if there even is a remedy for this, but I will look into it and get back to you if I find something.

Followed your directions for using darktable with GIMP, but was still unable to open my NEF (Nikon) files in GIMP. darktable opened it and allowed me to make some adjustments, but the file did not open in GIMP once I closed darktable. GIMP gave me a preview of my edited photo, but when I clicked on "open", it sent me back to darktable. Can't tell if I did something wrong, or if GIMP just doesn't like Nikon's raw files. Disappointed.

when exporting an image, try to uncheck "Save color profile" (in export window popup)

I found this helpful, but ran into problems when saving. I exported my picture as a jpg and now I have an .xmp file and don't know what to do with it

I have RAWTherapee 5.7 on my Win 8.1 laptop and 5.8 on my Win 10 Surface, and it works fine on both. Just sayin'. I also have Darktable on both, and am learning both programs.

Can you show us how to change back to the default grey/white ish theme on GIMP that was before the new update?

Thanks. Works with GoPro Raw files (.gpr), but first you need to convert gpr to dng with Adobe DNG Converter (free soft)

i can say for shure that RawTherapee 5.5 works great in windows... so far i haven't even tried any other Raw software since RawTherapee seems to summon all the needs i have. The "last" thing i need to know is how to integrate Gimp 2.10 correctly to RawTherapee 5.5, since i don't fully understand how it works, therefore i'm limited to first processing the raw in RT and then editing the jpeg in Gimp

For astrophotography, large numbers of subframes need to be imported. Darktable requires the user to close it for each subframe to complete the import into Gimp. Is there a way to bypass this step of closing Darktable?

I have gimp 2.1o and the latest download for DT and I get an error while closing D nd Gimp does not receive the export.... What am I missing....

UFRAW is also built into GIMP - fewer editing options!

Great video! This all works. However; looks like that this only works for 1 image with Darktable (have not tried RawTherapee). I would like open multiple images at the same time? For example, if you have multiple RAW files that you want edit as layers and make as one like say for HDR or composite? I"ve seen that you can simply drag and drop RAW files into Photoshop (I don't use LR and PS atm). I was able to do the following on Windows: Select all the files and open with GIMP which in turn will launch Darktable for the one image. Close Darktable and then drag the remaining files into the layer section into GIMP. GIMP will in turn open each file in Darktable, where you will have to close Darktable each time to continue the loading process into GIMP. Then after GIMP has loaded all the images, I opened Darktable and loaded all the images in Darktable. Going to work this way to see how this goes.

Since I shoot with a Canon M200 I needed to convert .cr3 files to export to GIMP. It turns out that I need to include quotation marks when entering path information in the custom command line. I.e.: "C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.10.exe" Very helpful tutorial! Thank you.

i did download Darktable but is not link to grimp..... when I download i had closed grimp, how can I link this now?

Im confused, so do I have to edit my photo in Darktable first to take advantage of the RAW image or can i just export it into GIMP ?

You have to process the RAW file in GIMP, and then open up the processed image into GIMP when you are done.

Hi Michael, I have already been using Darktable on Linux and Gimp 2.8 on Linux. So when I downloaded Gimp 2.10 using "flatpak" I may have missed some critical config stuff. I can inquire on some Linux user groups and see how to fix it. I will come back and report on how it goes so you can add it to your, already, excellent material.

Go to Edit>Preferences>Theme and choose from any of the colors listed. You can also go to Edit>Preferences>Icon Theme to change the way your icons look. I'll include this in my next tutorial.

Is there a procedure to link GIMP 2.10 to darktable? How does GIMP even know you have it?

When I open the image the dialog box, it won't show a preview of the image I have chosen. It was there in version 2.8. I removed the latest version (2.10.6) and downloaded it again but the preview section of the 'Open Image' dialog box is still missing. Has anyone else had this problem?

@Trius Got it sorted. Edit > Preferences > Image thumbnails > choose your option. You then need to click on the small image box to show the proper preview when opening an image. :)

i've installed Darktable but i keep getting the error message. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I did this and all it does is open the pic in darktable. I don't know what's I'm doing wrong, I closed both applications and tried again and the same thing happened.

This is a very good way to open RAW files in GIMP. It worked flawlessly. Thanks for the tip! As a standalone program, though, darktable doesn't look too impressive. I'll keep playing around with it, but so far it looks kinda clunky and limited for workflow management. Even Nikon's View NX & Capture NX are better for that.

I agree that its functionality could be expanded to include more features. But it is a great solution for people who just need to open RAW image files into GIMP and maybe want to tweak a few things before they bring the photo into GIMP. Thanks for watching!

Davies Media Design Agreed-perfect for opening & editing. Using another program for management is a little easier anyway since if I’m viewing an image in darktable I have to close it before opening the file through GIMP. I’m basically thinking of darktable as a RAW plugin for GIMP.

I can also open Nikon Capture into GIMP.

All well and good if you're using a top of the line, $3,000+ camera and Windows, but how about a Canon Rebel and Linux Mint? GIMP refuses to open CR2 raw files natively, so I'm stuck with using Darktable only.

For this particular tutorial I did use a photo that my friend took on his nice camera, but for most of my other tutorials I actually just use my Canon Rebel T3i which costs about $300 nowadays and still produces RAW photos. So that doesn't matter too much. However, in regards to your operating system, I am not sure if there are any issues with syncing Darktable to GIMP using Linux - did you follow the steps in the tutorial and are still having issues?

Yeah, but for whatever reason it's just saying that there's no program that can read the Canon raw files specifically.

When i try to open a file gimp it crash

The problem with RawTherapee and GIMP was actually in how GIMP loaded RawT. It's now fixed by making GIMP tell RawT to not show the console on load, but I'm not sure which version it'll be with, and even if, I don't have any RAWs, and I'm not on my computer.

Note that raw images opened through Darktable will be 32-bit!!! Wich essentially is "raw" in it self...

Jeremy Charette Instead, I used a free downloadable Adobe DNG converter to convert the folder of NEF RAW images into DNS files which worked as these were then transferable to Gimp using the darktable method shown in this vid. Maybe you’ve done it already but this helped so give it a try if not

Warning: The image you are loading has 16 bits per channel. GIMP can only handle 8 bit, so it will be converted for you. Information will be lost because of this conversion. File .Nef . GIMP Linux, Can You Help Me?

i hear gimp 2.10 can handle 16 bit, even saw 32 bit option, trial pending, obviously, since i am here looking for raw loaders

Darktable is available only for 64 bit windows version. Not for 32 bit windows pc.

I tried your instructions. It does not worked for me. I'm using Mac. I am using Canon CR3 Raw Files.

From what I can see, you're not really opening a raw file in Gimp. You're opening it in darktable or RawTherapee, processing it, and then returning the processed image to Gimp. Gimp doesn't have the original raw data and, even if it did, it would be unable to understand or use it.

As usual doesn’t work. I tried for hours, but every freakin time, when I close Darktable it doesn’t load the file. It sits there for a few minutes and then freezes my computer. Many photographers shoot in RAW so I really don’t understand why it’s not already integrated into Gimp.

If you are referring to Edit>Preferences>Image Import and Export, I do not have that option. DarkTable's executable file shows up, but RAWTherapee's does not.

I didn't have to do anything except install darktable. When I opened a RAW file from within GIMP it automatically opened the file in darktable, even though Rawtherapee was previously installed.

Opened a digital photo directly. No new installation required.

None of what is shown in this video works for me. I completely can't get a raw image to open in GIMP despite trying both raw therapee and darktable. I have used photoshop elements and photodirector and lightroom in the past and wanted to check these free apps out to see what they are like. There is a reason they are free. Incredibly unintuitive. What a waste of time.
