How To Open A NEW Etsy Store - Including Your FIRST LISTING - Mini Course

I have seen so many BAD "how to open an Etsy store" videos here on KZread, I just had to make one to show you all a good example of how to do it RIGHT.
I walk you through the whole process and include the bits that no one else wants to talk about, like banking details, and how to do your first listing!
This is basically a mini course, and there is a ton of information in it, so watch the whole lot, and let me know in the comments what you think!

    I am just finding your videos, this is the first one I have seen. It made me feel a little more confident that I may just be able to do this. I have taken the first steps in setting my store up, I have given it a name but have not done my first listing. I said that this year I'm taken the word procrastinate out of my vocabulary. Time to take that LEAP OF FAITH! Will be watching more of your videos. Thank you and GOD Bless :)

    Agreed, for me this is insane...in a good way... mind is fully blown... I've been researching and even making digital products but teetering on the fence about this whole thing. The failure statistics for new businesses are not good and I dig through the comments as well and see so much failure, an alarming, disheartening amount of failure. I've been stalling because I KNEW there were things other KZreadrs were NOT telling me. Watching Etsy Consultant has confirmed this for me. This whole thing is still daunting but now I feel more confident than I ever have before. I've been studying Etsy from other KZreadrs the whole year of 2023 and I kid you not I've learned more from Etsy Consultant in one night than I did studying from other KZreadrs the whole year of 2023. I'm blessed to find him miraculously after searching KZread's algorithm for "EverBee vs Alura," which now I know to steer clear of, or at least just don't hold a serious candle to using these tools, which other KZreadrs swear by without understanding how they actually work and how the data is sourced to build these tools. Hope is restored and now I actually believe I can be successful using methods and principles Etsy Consultant teaches. I know more of what to do and what to look into before I start my store, and better yet what not to do and how to not waste so much time. Thank You.

    Hey man i'm glad to have come across your videos for the first time today! I appreciate the value and time that you put into your videos! I want to get into Etsy but I have no idea where to start and am very overwhelmed. I've seen a bunch of videos online of people recommending getting started with print on demand but I've come across your videos exposing how its extremely difficult to get any sales and take off the ground. As a complete beginner with a very low budget what single thing would you recommend doing on Etsy which is not too hard and can actually scale into a full time income online within the next couple of months, and where would I learn how to start that thing?

  • @etsyconsultant

    @etsyconsultant

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Mark, thanks for commenting. It all depends on your passion and skills. I suggest you do your research on Etsy and see what already sells. Then ask yourself "Which of these products/niches is something I'd like to work on?". As long as you have found proof of it working and you are passionate about it - you'll be able to put in the effort needed to succeed. For example I could recommend 'digital downloads' but what if you are not the type of person who can stand being in front of a computer screen for hours each day? No point in torturing yourself like that. Good luck!

    Brilliant video, I've been watching tips videos along with looking for a walkthrough just like this. Thank you for this helpful video, it's going on my etsy tips playlist for future reference! I've got everything ready accept for the store itself! I certainly can't do a listing a Day! I've got to design/prototype, produce, package, ship, run the shop and do all the other stuff! It's a Laser cutting/engraving business with 2 lasers- I am starting by designing miniature kits. I've got my first 15 items designed, and inventory ready for the first half of them (should be between 4-6k in products once sold depending on sales and discounts). I will be selling digital downloads for things I design but don't produce eventually and I may be able to get up to a new product every 2-4 Days with that once I have the time to get going with that. Right now it's all getting the store ready to go public with our physical items, almost everything is ready other than just plain opening the store. It's exciting and nerve wracking at the same time!

    I've had a POD Etsy shop since January of this year, have made a few sales (primarily friends and family), but I was basically told by other veteran members of Etsy, that the POD bandwagon has come and gone. It was hard for me to hear, but made me realize that alot of folks that are promoting POD shops, are earning more revenue on KZread, than they are on Etsy. Not taking anything away from Etsy Consultant, as I've watched many of his videos, but you have to ask yourself, what IF the bandwagon has actually come and gone, and all we're doing as new shop owners, are simply spinning our wheels in the hopes that we sell something after MANY hours of work? Just my .02 for what's it's worth.

    Hi G, and thanks for the feedback! So, in an ideal world, if you can commit to managing and growing 2 separate, quality digital stores, selling in to different niches, then this would clearly be best. This will be incredibly hard to do though due to pressure for constant designs.

    I like the step-by-step process. One thing that I think gets glossed over is the photo portion. Is it better to have a plain white background or a live shot like you have done? Seems like popular sellers use both styles.

    Hi Scott, thanks for commenting. Ideally it's best to have separate shops, as these types of products are not similar enough to work well together in a single shop. Additionally, keep in mind that growing two stores at the same time is extremely challenging and time-consuming. I suggest you pick one that is a better fit for you and put your effort in it. You can always start the second store once you have the ball rolling with the first one.

Do you think Etsy is the best place to start for people who are selling for the first time ever? Or, in your opinion, would it be a good idea to start somewhere else to get a feel for selling and hopefully make our mistakes elsewhere so that we can fully do it right when we do open an Etsy shop? Hi Pammy, thanks for commenting. It really depends on what you are selling. Every platform is different because different kinds of people use it. So if your ideal client is more likely to be on Ebay than on Etsy - you should start by selling on Ebay (or Amazon, Shopify etc.) What matters is the client base, not the platform.

However last week I had some other things come up so i missed out on about 7 days. After explaining that I wanted to see if there was a way to continue with what I had already completed without opening my shop, they took it upon themselves to open my shop. I've been a little overwhelmed with all the info out there. This video is just what I needed to get started. Thank you! One Question: In the billing and payment info, you made it clear that the payment banking info has to match the info on file with your bank. No problem. However you skipped the billing info saying it's the same thing. However, I don't want my bank account to be billed, just in case there's not enough money in there to cover the bill. Instead, I want to use a credit card. Can I do this if the name and address of the credit card is the same name and address on my bank account? If I can't do that, and have to use my bank info, does Etsy provide advance emails to sellers, saying a current bill is about to be charged? That way, I can make sure the funds are available in my bank account to cover the bill.

  • @etsyconsultant

    @etsyconsultant

    4 ай бұрын

    Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yes you can add a debit/credit card to pay for any fees due where your account balance doesn't cover it. Etsy does not provide advance warning of payments that are taken, however if you are aware of how your shops doing, and keep an eye on your balance in your statement, there shouldn't be any surprises. To confirm for any bank accounts / cards linked to your Etsy account they must be in the same name as the name registered on your Etsy store.

    @@etsyconsultant Hi Nick, I am looking to set up an Aerial Photography business. I am a licensed drone operator, and would like to set up a business selling high quality landscape and historic building prints. I have a list of places in Wales, England, Scotland, a majority are well know, others not so well known and I feel these would be of interest to a more localised audience. I am based in Devon, so already have a start on my photographic portfolio to get started with. We are in the process of looking for a suitable motor home so we can move to different locations capture images, edit on the go and upload to Etsy. I have a place that will print images for me, then I will start by posting to any prospective purchasers myself. If the business looks like it has legs I intend to outsource the printing and posting to a third party print business, dependent on cost! Failing this I was going to invest in a good pro quality printer and produce them myself. I would like some advice on setting this up on Etsy. I have looked at other similar businesses, which appear to display their images in the same way, and are very localised in what they offer, I hope that covering in time a national collection to choose from it will be a one stop store. Any advice would be gratefully received👍 Gary

    This is so helpful! So I have a question about starting a new shop from scratch vs revamping a previous existing shop that I was not very active on. I started an Etsy shop on 2019, but the products I was trying to sell were not optimal for Etsy and I really don't make them anymore. So my shop has just been kinda sitting with very little activity for the last couple years. I was just going to completely recamp the shop with a totally different name and product line . But after watching your videos, I'm thinking that would not be wise and maybe I should just start from scratch with a brand new shop. I'd love to hear you're thoughts

    Hi there, thanks for commenting. You cannot hide the sales number from your store. What you can hide is which products have been sold.

    Hi Jennifer, thank you for your comment. Yes you could, but I do not recommend it because Etsy boosts new shops for a certain period of time and opening it before actually being active would waste the visibility boost.

    Hi Nik, great video! My question is about making new listings that are similar to my existing ones (color or style variations for example) Is there any benifit to starting each listing from scratch compared to copying the original listing and making the little changes within it to reflect the new product characteristics? Or is copying the original listing fine? Like obviously copying listings saves time but I wonder whether Etsy favours brand new listings made from scratch? Thank you!

    Hi Jake, good question. It doesn't matter for Etsy if you copy a listing or create a new one. As long as you change things significantly enough, it's going to be considered as a new product by Etsy. If copying saves you time, please feel free to do that.

    Thank you again for the great video. I have 2 questions: first, any advices on how to show product in use, i sell wall clocks. And second, i noticed that you put commas in the title, should we use commas and other seperations or we can skip them and write one really long title? Are commas good or bad for the SEO?

    I also watch Cassiy Johnson on youtube. A successful Etsy seller and youtuber, now, when she showed how to set a shop up, she just casually put renewal to manual. Also she said people rarely actually click on or even care about your shop name, cuz technically every item is 'its own etsy shop' she says, so just name it anything. What do you think? Oh and she did not mention setting up policy..

  • @etsyconsultant

    Hi Tamas, manual renewal is one of the biggest mistakes you can make in an Etsy store, if you want sales as it cuts the sales history every time you sell a product, or it gets renewed. Shop names matter a lot, it is part of your brand, that cannot have been serious advice.
