How to Oil Change Toyota Rav4 2.5L 4 Cylinder 2013 -2016 DIY and save money
Ғылым және технология
How to change the oil on a Toyota Rav4 with the 2.5 L engine. This is on a 2013 Rav4 but the steps should be the same for other years. You want to use a All Synthetic oil for this engine because it is designed to run on that. 0w-20 Full Synthetic and it takes 4.7 quarts of oil. You still want to measure on the dipstick to ensure it is filled correctly. You must also use a Oil Filter Wrench to remove the Oil Filter Cap properly. If you have any questions please check your owners or service manual. Check out my other informational videos on how to maintain your Toyota Rav4.
I purchased the Oil Filter Wrench on eBay but they also sell them on Amazon. Here are the links to buy the wrench (EB0014) eBay link: ebay.to/2s6dbnf and Amazon link: amzn.to/2s55jSJ

This has to be the result of several generations of in-bred engineers who are trying to impress each other with how much complexity they can add to a simple requirement. But the video is very nice.

Just recently I got a used 2014 Toyota rav4 XLE for my wife. Since the oil filter is not the regular oil filter and is completely different, I learned how to change it when it's due for new oil change. This was a step by step video and extremely helpful, I thank you so much sir. Excellent job 👏

Extremely informative, sir! Saved me time and money with a quick 5 minute video. 10/10
Thanks. I just did my first oil change on my 2013 RAV4, and this was helpful. One tip that seems too easy, but I've never seen anyone else do it, if the car takes 4.6 quarts, and you have a container with 5 quarts, just measure .4 quart (about 13 ounces) into another container and pour the remaining 4.6 into the car.

many people have done the oil change without changing the drain plug washer. This will cause leakage around the plug. In order to stop the oil leakage, the plug is usually tightened more harder each time you change the oil. This will cause a problem eventually. replacing the drain plug washer is simple and cheap. This should not be ignored. Unfortunately, not only is it ignored by DIY doers, it is ignored by other professionals.
Well organized and logical step-by-step instructions. Helpful tips include: not over tightening drain screw on filter housing and using special filter wrench to re-install filter housing to avoid breaking it. I just purchased a used 2014 RAV4 and this will be my first experience with a cartridge-type filter after almost 60 years using the canister-type. Looks a bit more messy and time consuming but it ain't rocket science and because of this video I'll be able to deal with it with a minimum of bother. Thanks for a very useful and helpful video!
you save me 30$ thank you my good sir! this was right to the point and no bs.
25nm is 18 lb-ft..for the oil filter housing...the drain cap should be 12.5 nm or 9 lb-ft...which allows you to unscrew the cap without moving the whole assembly. Nice video..very helpful
You didn't change the crush washer on drain plug!
Thanks for the part numbers and links. That is helpful. Oh! Don't forget the crushable washer!

thanks for the simple rundown and lil tips !
Love it man. Thanks a lot. I was very confuse with the look of the "new filters" I've never change a filter on a car newer than 2009 hahha. Thanks a lot.
Good vid brother thanks for the info idk why the hell they had to complicate the filter to need a new tool but it is what it is stay safe ❤
Thank to you, Adam, for this video!
Thanks for this vid. Curse those auto repair places. I had to use some WD40 and He-man the damn filter off cause it was so over tightened.
This video really helped thank you
I appreciate the overview of the process - just bought our 2013 used, and would like to not have to drive 100+ miles round-trip, to have the dealer change oil. I have a 2001 RAV4 with over 222,000 miles, and use Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 Synthetic Blend in it - I'll be doing the Full Synthetic Magnatec 0W-5 in the 2013. I wonder why Toyota went away from a spin-on canister filter? Seems like the bottom 3/8" plug would be abused as a filter housing tightener by anyone not familiar with the components involved - a recipe for trouble, but maybe an extra parts sale for Toyota? Counter-intuitive for the way I've come to think of Toyota as a manufacturer...
thanks, exactly what I needed to know
Thank you, didn't know there was actually a drain system.
best oil change video .Ty
Thank you, just bought one of these and wanted to know how after I found out the had a canister type oil filter.
Excellent video, one question u can tell all the tools u need to change I have the wrench
Great video. Thank you.
Have you ever change the stop light bulb on the driver side? If you did or know, could you show me how?
What kind of wheel ramps are you using? Thanks!
Great vid. Thank you boss!!
Nice Video. Where did you get those ramps to lift the car up so you could get underneath. What are they called?
Great video. Thanks!!
In this example your oil filter housing cams off so easy. I do the maintenance on my cousins, sil and my cars for a total of 5 vehicles toyotas that use this type of filter housing. All were bought new from the dealer. When it was time to change the oil all had the housing stuck on that the cheap metal stamped wrenches failed. I doubted if the dealer ever changed the filter.
Awesome! Thank you!
You should pre-lube the O-rings with some fresh oil when you're reinstalling them. Other than that, man I'm ticked that I have to buy a special tool to change my own oil!

Can share the torque specs for oil tank nut at the bottom? And torque specs for the big piece you tightened using the grey custom socket. Thanks
Did that filter drain come with the new filter? The reason why manufacturers use these is because it's easier to recycle. I wouldn't mind this seems easy adds a step , but still better than having to buy a oil pump for a lot of the new nicer cars with top mount oil filters and no oil pan plugs, pumps only.....

Someone did list them all... Drain plug on oil pan is 30 ft.lbs. Drain plug on oil filter is 9 ft.lbs. Oil filter cap assembly is 18 ft.lbs.
Did the drain plug have a washer and if so, did you replace the washer?. Thanks for the video

It does, and technically you should replace it every time. But typically you can clean and reuse the washer and just check it for any leaks the next day.

Awesome video Adam especially since I got a toyota recently and am having to learn the cartridge oil change technique versus the oil way. I was wondering why you had the extra cartridge body in the video? It was excellent using it for the video and explaining things. How much do they cost for the Toyota? May need one way down the road at some point. I think I will get a small hose to attach to the cartridge body white drain piece to make the draining easier and less messy. Plus you could reuse it for I am guessing that drain piece is reusable even though they include it in the new filter box? Great job. Thanks.

I drop mine off at Firestone. I use to give it to a dairy farmer who used it on his barn cleaner.
The drain plug on the oil filter cap is not suppose to be torqued to 25N•m. That is the torque for the oil filter cap itself. The torque spec for the drainplug on the oil filter cap is only 12.5 N•m. This can be found on the instructions that come with an OEM Toyota oil filter.
Thanks... I wasn't sure where the o-rings went.
My 2011 Rav4 has had convention oil in it, so that is what i put in. This car takes about 2-3 hrs for all the oil to get into the sump after you park it. So check your fill after leaving sit for a few hrs. or overnight.

if the metal portion doesn't come loose just remove the filter housing. its a little bit more messy but won't hurt anything. the metal portion just saves on mess by draining the housing.
