Dear friend , I am extremely happy I found your video since it really helped me solve my problem. Last time I chsnged my 2013 Rav 4 oil filter, I made a big mistake that nearly caused me to lose my engine. Since it was the first time I tried to change a Rav 4 oil filter, I did not have it clear where the big ' O ' ring was supposed to be installed on the oil filter housing, so I put it at the very end of it. I added the new oil and. started my engine and, started driving. Thank God my sister was standing nearby and yelled at me, warning me lots of oil was coming out from underneath my Rav 4. I stopped and checked. A friend me chanich took the fiter out, reinstalled it and didint leak any more.He never explained to me how he fixed it. More than a year later, I tried to installed the new filter, but...after getting everything else ready, I had to stop suddenly , since I had No idea where the big ' O ' ring was to be instslled. I cheked a couple of videos but still couldnt understand. So, I did quit for the night ( june 16 ). Then, when I got in my bed, decided to watch one more video before I fell asleep, and thats how I found yours. Excellant job. Thank you from the heart. Your friend from Puerto Rico, Edwin

This is honestly the best video for the toyota oil filter install. B/c all 'fast lube' places also overtigthen both the filter housing and the aluminum filter drain (both). I also couldn't get the alum filter drain out as well and ended up needed to buy a new filter housing.

Had this happen to a friend today. Toyota used to service his car and the last tech to remove the housing put the new one on too tight. Using the tool broke the plastic tabs. Had to take the plastic covers off, the one under the engine and the one by the passenger wheel. Got a large pair of channel locks and was able to finally get the housing off and replaced it with a metal one. Good video Happy Motoring.

I totally loved this car..but kind a got bored with it as I had to change the factory radio/cd player just to keep me insane with more options. Loved it... I changed my oil every 3K miles.... it's worth doing oil changes yourself.

Excellent video, perfectly explained.. And I will change the oil filter once the tool arrives. That said, why the hell didn't Toyota just go for the screw in filter ? They did a good job with the filters location... but a canister filter ? That's 1960's technology. I believe people would change their oil and filter more frequently if it were as easy as a screw on filter.

You can just push it with your finger, but you're right, there isn't much oil in there anyway. If you have a pan there you wont have a mess. It is about the "mess" that I personally don't like; environment friendly designs I like as we progressively go forward in this world. Being environmentally conscious is GOOD... how would you like it if some hackers dumped the oil on your front lawn? ... you know what I mean.

Rusty Z., You are so on point, I never use that, I just drop the whole canister, drain the oil, clean it up nice, put the new cartridge in, and tighten back up. That extra step of opening that bottom little port and using that plastic drain port is a waste of time. Such a stupid idea by the Toyota engineers, that was over-engineering, extra work and totally unnecessary!!!

He did state 22 ft/lbs which is ok, you don't really need to use a torque wrench when you do it enough times. Hand tighten plus a quarter more turn is sufficient. Over time and with experience, you learn, by feel, to torque without need for torque wrenches.

Thank you for your video; I wouldn't think of putting some oil in the new filter before installing filter assembly... but I also think it's not really necessary but a nice added "touch". Also showing the broken oil assembly when trying to loosen as the last oil changer had torque the oil filter assembly too much. Really bad! and sometimes these fly by night techs would over tighten the oil pan bolt/nut where you have to lift the car way up to get under the car before having enough leverage to loosen the oil pan bolt/nut. Personally, I tighten the oil filter assembly by hand and slightly tighten with wrench... that is all that is needed. Look oil leaks put a cardboard under car overnight to check for too loose oil filter assembly if you're worried; you'll see drip marks on the cardboard. One other thing.. I prefer to drain the oil filter first because it is easier to move the waste oil tub around easier to catch the waste oil...then move the tub to the back to capture the waste oil from the plug. I hate spilling oil on the driveway...;).

I currently have a stuck filter on my wifes 2018 RAV4. The first 4 changes were done at the dealer and they clearly overtightened it. I'm not sure if I want to ever take it back to the dealership but I feel like they should own up to over-tightening it. This is the first and last car that I have owned in 35 years that I have let someone else change the oil in. Definitely will be the last. I put my 800 ft lb pneumatic impact gun on it and gave it a few hits and it didn't budge. Stopped because I didn't want to snap something in half.

That drain port thing is a waste of time, I haven't changed that or the rubber gasket in years, no leaks whatsoever. I always monitor it every oil change. That was such a stupid and unnecessary idea to put that drain hole in the bottom of the filter cup. Totally unnecessary and extra work. The Toyota engineers weren't too bright to add that to changing the oil filter, when just like the metal can filters, you just unscrew and drain the oil from the filter in the oil pan. Duh! Just think about it after you change your Rav 4 oil a few times and you'll see what I mean, makes no sense!
