How to Multiplex an LED Grid...

Ойын-сауық

Cliff Notes for this video:
You light an LED by sending voltage through the anode and having the cathode as ground
multiplexing can be done by grouping the anodes as either rows or columns and grouping cathodes the opposite way.
you can light multiple LEDs by lighting one LED at a time very fast
RGB LEDs are wired similarly...
group common anodes....
then, group the red, green, and blue cathodes the opposite way
if you still have too many pins, one way to shrink them is to multiplex the transistors.
Transistors have an Emitter, Base, and collector.
I actually got this part of the video wrong....
you send voltage through the emitter, the base acts like an on/off switch, and then the collector sends out the voltage
I'm not really sure why this is.... it sounds like the collector should be input, and emitter should be output.... you can tell I'm not an electrical engineer
either way... video has collector and emitter swapped... oops!
My design goes off of Kevin Darrahs multiplexing video.... so.... if all else fails... follow his design...

My next mau5head will not be using transistors! I will be using LED drivers! I was just showing how I used them on this mau5head.
Next video will be all about the code...

Just an idea to cut down on the soldering...did you consider using digital RGB LEDs? They are individually assignable (I believe via an arduino will work). Just a thought

Lol that is almost exactly the same as my theory about how to do that, but I believe something similar is done with factory made lcd and led display panels. I am planning on making my own led display, but it might take a while. I will also show it on my channel when it’s finished.

The NPN transistors get a positive voltage on the emitter, that's not how it is supposed to work.

Hello SRGam3r, I jsut want to know hoe many of these RGB LEDs im going to need if i want to make the whole front with only LEDs, so i can add custom animations to it and stuff. It would be really cool to know. Thanks! PS: I subscribed :)

I considered it. They are essentially just using LED drivers every few LEDs to handle them. (Essentially what Chasela's builder did) I chose not to go this route because I can control more LEDs with less drivers and because they are really expensive! I am looking at multiplexing ALOT of LEDs for mau5head and am unsure if the Arduino can handle this amount of data. If not, this may be the way I'll go...

@anders287 I think deadmau5 uses over 900 LEDs in his head. I know it's 32 rows which almost double mine! Chasela's builder dude was able to squeeze 728 in his. They both used SMD LEDs though which is what I will be using in my next project.

this is the base of how a LED can work, how can we set some LEDs to the ground and the athors not !! how can we ?? cause we can only pilote the voltage but the ground we r forced to cable all the lines to the ground and we won't touch that after so we gonna ligh up a line of the LEDs not only one LED which is not perfect !
