How to Move the Shoulders in the Golf Swing - Ultimate Guide

Спорт

Correctly moving the shoulders in the golf swing is so important if you want clean, accurate strikes. If you are not getting enough upper body rotation your right shoulder is likely firing out causing all sorts of ball striking problems.
In this ultimate guide, PGA pro Kerrod Gray and Alex Riggs demonstrate how to move the shoulders in the golf swing to improve your distance and accuracy.
The drill progresses over 3 distinct steps so make sure you watch to the end to get the most of the pivot drill.

This video is bloody fantastic! I’ve been working on rotation and downswing for a while but struggling. That first movement in the downswing barely anyone mentions. It’s also a really good feel and drill to do. Great video. 👏

Most bad golfers use their arms across the chest for power without much of a shoulder turn. Good golfers turn their shoulders without adducting their arms across the chest much at all. When you do it correctly, the power and accuracy comes easy. It’s uncomfortable at first because you feel so far behind the ball but trust me keep doing it. Thanks for confirming what I’ve been working on. Great video.

I'm the bad golfer you speak of. I can move back with my shoulders but cannot get my right shoulder down and forward as demonstrated in this video. Not sure how to fix that. Probably just remain bad.

Hey Kerrod, I noticed that your head is coming off the ball? I thought that you were suppose to keep your head still… Can you please explain about head movement during the takeaway and backswing, thank you!

same thing, in fact I just got instruction on that. I know some players move off of it a little bit and come back, but for recreational players (anybody above scratch) I think you are far better off trying to keep your head still and not move off of the ball during your back swing. I think they also kind of missed the most important part of the correct way to the downswing with the shoulder, but they did cover two excellent issues, (1) not swinging flat out to the left, which was me, and (2) finish with the same posture in your follow through as you were in your back swing, just excellent advice.

dear thomas: Here's all you have to do. Practice 8 hours a day, under instruction, for 5 years and you will have a decent golf swing. Same thing with the piano. You have to put in the time. If it came in a bottle la da da la da da....

Great drill I am 79 years old and do not have problems doing this drill. One thing that really helps is turning of hips and left foot comes off ground.I have a question, it looks like his left leg is straight and my swing coach told me to resist doing this, but for me it feels more natural with straight leg , and use as a trigger point to fire hips. Whats your opinion? Thanks again

Great to hear the drill works for you at 79! The straight vs. bent left leg in the swing can vary from player to player. If a straighter leg feels natural and helps your hip movement without causing discomfort, it can be a good personal adjustment. But because I can't see it - It's worth discussing with your coach to ensure it complements your swing style.

Crossing your arms is not the feel in the actual golf swing. The drill of crossing arms across chest orientates muscle and joints differently to that in the golf swing. Nonsense to practice using internal rotation adduction of upper limbs when the swing itself requires external rotation abduction of the trail arm.😂

I agree. Must be done with deliberation. Once you get the club in your hands again, it’s completely different. Hard to make that transition.
