How To Measure for a Western style Cartridge Belt

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Short video on how to properly measure yourself for a well-fitting Hellhound western style cartridge belt.
Using a fabric or soft tape measure, measure around yourself (over clothing) wherever you plan to wear the belt. If you plan to wear the belt slung low on your hips, measure there. If you plan to wear the belt high on your waist, measure there etc.
Please DO NOT "just add four inches to your pants measurement" as some would suggest - this will result in an INCORRECTLY fitting belt.

Hello - I'm afraid not. However, I would recommend trying a post utahgunexchange.com/ They have a classifieds section and there are many people there buying and selling gun related items such as leather gun belts. Good luck!

As a maker, do you add length to the customers measurement when making the belt to compensate for the leather thickness? if so how much? do you use the measurement from inside of the buckle to the center hole? Thanks.

Typically I don't add length to account for thickness - I used to, but then found that more often than not it actually made the belt a little too big. So now we just operate on the exact measurement. The belts tend to stretch ever so slightly as they break in anyhow and its better to start slightly snug and then stretch to form. As for measuring, we measure from the inside edge of the buckle to the center hole, yes.

Your work looks great! I make some holsters for myself and family members. I am not a pro (70 yrs old). I use W&C leather for my belts and holsters. It looks like you use pre-dyed leather? Do you ask for a specific temper (stiffness) of leather? What grade do you order? I have your bullet loop templates. Where do you measure from and to for loops to be centered?

Hi! Thank you! Yes, we use W&C and most of what we use comes pre-dyed. We buy pre-dyed simply because leather that is dyed at the tannery comes out the most even and smooth looking. That being said, we do custom colors all the time and dye in-house as well. As for temper, it depends on what I'm crafting, but typically we buy saddle skirt since it has the firmest temper and works very well for gun leathers. We also use a lot of their traditional harness leather for work that requires a medium temper. We purchase their 'Standard' grade, which is the highest they offer. When we measure for bullet loops, I measure from the inside edge of the belt buckle to the center hole on the belt (the actual 'measurement' of the customer) and the halfway mark between will be where the center of your bullet loop run goes. So for example: Customer's measurement is 43". I cut the belt and temporarily set the buckle. I run the belt along our long ruler and set the inside edge of the buckle to the zero mark. Since the customer's measurement is 43", the halfway point is 21.5". I would set my run of bullet loops centered on the 21.5" mark (right between bullet loops 9 and 10...or right between 6 and 7 if you're only doing 12 loops). I hope that makes sense and helps! We'll have to do a short video on how we find that measurement.

Thanks for asking Kenny, I'm not sure what other makers do, but for Hellhound, measuring for scout or ranger belts is the same process. :)
