How To Mate An Engine And Transmission

Detroit Muscle co-host, Marc Christ, takes you through how to mate an engine with a transmission.
First, start with your release bearing. Attach the release bearing to the clutch fork. Once it's snapped in, slide the fork onto the pivot shaft. Before you start installing the clutch parts, you need to get the block plate installed. Slide the plate up against the block and put a bolt in to temporarily hold it in place. American Powertrain has everything you'll need for this project.
Next, put in the pilot bearing, and flywheel. Here in the shop, we use ARP products. For threadlocker that you'll need to use for the threads, Permatex is what we keep on hand. Then the flywheel is ready to be installed. Run in the bolts and tighten them, torquing them to 85 ft.-lbs.
Run over the flywheel with brake cleaner like CRC Brakleen to get all the dirt and grime off so it doesn't get onto the clutch disc. You'll want to install the clutch disc next along with the alignment tool. Then attach the pressure plate that can be attached with bolts that come in the American Powertrain kit and get torqued to 24 ft.-lbs.
Finally, it's time to mate the two. Maneuver your engine until it's married to the transmission and fasten with bolts to keep it in place.

    Trying to put a 7.3L diesel into a 94 F450. I only get a week off a month.(and can only steal about 2 days from the family)Been wiggling this struggle for about 4 months😬. In the truck tho. Starting to wonder if I should pull engine and trans out of the truck to marry them?

    Good job! I'd like adpating a 1987 Mazda 13B 1987 NA engine, 150 HP at 6000 rpm, to a Chrysler Torqueflite, 'Torquecommand', 3 speed automatic transmission in a 1976 AMC 6L, 4.2 litres. Are steps same with a torque converter as with an ordinary clutch? Thanks. Blessings +

    I just spent like 3 hours trying to mate the engine and trans but I just can't seem to get it, I'm not sure if the splines of the trans isn't going into the clutch (I peeked a look and it sits still when I move the trans case around), I tried putting on the driveshaft and put it in first so it doesn't move and it can go in but it was getting too late and I gave up. It was so close to connecting up but it's not going all the way in, I tried putting some bolts through to pull them together but it was a bit too far, barely caught one thread. Do you have any tricks that can help me?

    @Legacy 4x4 and Off Road Got a friend around, tried some stuff and at some point it got in. if you've got the trans and engine on the ground get some blocks or whatever to try to change the angle and position to where you can push it in, try putting the driveshaft in the trans to hold the input shaft (I didn't tighten the pressure plate so the splines kept spinning & never lined up). Just look inside while your friend tries to push it in to see what exactly is the problem.

    @@faisal3398 I know this old but it might help someone out, dont ever use bolts "to pull everything together", it should go together on its own while being pushed,if its not, something could be binded specially in a auto trans and by pulling it together with bolts you will break expensive things like a input shaft or a converter pump.

    I have a question can the engine cause the transmission to start leaking if there is internal vibration coming from the engine? I have a 2016 Ford chores SCL three. 5 Front Wheel Dr. Had to change the motor no transmission problems after we change the motor a couple of months later The transmission started having flywheel knocking and caused leaking. Got another transmission and the same thing happened again. It’s currently at my mechanic I don’t know what to do

    Sounds like when the engine was installed the torque converter wasn't "seated" into the tranny pump properly,this is a extremely common problem that many people experience when doing this job,you have to make sure the converter is seated and that it has the proper clearance or bad things will happen in a hurry, I'm sure your mechanic figured it out by now.

    so once they're mated, that means the transmission shaft and crankshaft are definitely mated as well?

    The tranny input shaft goes inside or "rides' on that pilot bearing he hammered in, on a automatic its reversed your torque converter has a pilot itself made into the converter that rides on the crankshaft.

    Lol. Can you do a video of where there's no space to drop in a engine and trans combo, and where we spend half the day cussing trying to get that cunt input shift into the clutch disk and into the bearing?
