How To Mark Queens, Cage Attendants, Manage Mating Nucs
In this video I demonstrate marking queens with a paint pen, getting them into a cage and adding attendant workers to the cage. These cages are California mini cages and are not my favourite to use. I actually prefer to use the JzBz plastic cages but I don't have any right now. I also prefer the cera cell "clam shell" style cage, but I also don't have any of those at the moment.
I also briefly discuss some of the management that goes into these small mating nucs and how they aren't the right solution for all (or even most) beekeepers. But If you were curious about this style, then I hope you learned something.

Great to have you posting again. Thanks. Hope all is well.
Gosh, I really miss your videos! I hope to see you back sometime. I’m in Wisconsin, so your videos are very helpful for us northern beekeepers. I hope all is well with you. 😊🐝
Really pleased so see you posting again. I am a novice beekeeper in the UK and many of the KZread channels seem to to be US focused and somehow different to what we do here in the UK. Your videos, on the other hand, are all informative, illustrative and above all interesting. I have watched every one of them and was worried that you may have given up posting. Keep it up! Looking forward to seeing many more!
Great to see you back. Hopefully all is well!
Miss your videos! They’re good stuff!

Great to see you back, love your content. Thanks much.
Glad to see you back. We run both 3 frame deep mating nucs and mini ones. Use capped brood from deep mating nucs to boost weak colonies.

Almost every comment that I read stated in one way or another that we are glad you are back and posting again.. I will also say, Glad you are back at it , and a great video to boot!! Thanks , Phillip Hall

Thank you so much for the clear descriptive video. I very much appreciate you posting this subject. And glad to have you posting, its been a while. :-) . Phillip Hall
Great to have you back.
You did great with your breakdown of the process==step by step, straightforward and a good speaking voice. I don't care much for hotshots or clowns. Thank you for making this video. New sub here.
Awesome to see us back.....
So glad you've done another video. You are the one that got me interested in managing hives as Single Brood Chamber. I couldn't find a lot of info on it but as an older female I couldn't lift the deeps by myself so this year I just went for it. I have 3 Single Brood hives. Much easier for me to handle. I'm managing and learning a lot but can't say if I've done it right.
Glad your back!!!! Good content .thanks for sharing .🐝safe and keep your smoker lit. Konrad
As others said, it's great getting you making more videos!
I have been pretty successful handling my queens when it is necessary . I have used the drones to become confident. Grabbing attendants will be a lot easier to master now that I have seen your helpful trick. It is so good to see you back.
I Miss your videos. You helped my understanding of beekeeping. Thanks.
Glad your back! I missed your videos.
Great video Devan, lots of good information.

Thanks Devan. Glad to see you back and looking forward to your next one. I always get something out of them, .. because you were wondering if we do.. Greetings from Marengo, WI.
Really Enjoy your videos. Very informative.
Thank you for this, it's really nice seeing someone confident & competent up close handling their queens...I get really scared I'm going to hurt mine...
Devan, I now am confidently marking my queens with no problem or lack of confidence doing so. Until this video, It was a pain for me marking queens. I WAS using a marking cage but not anymore! Thanks so much! I hope you are having a good year with your bees as well as life in general. Phillip Hall
Great to see you posting again!
Good info. 21min later,I'm wishing for more. Keep them coming
Great to see you again Devan! Excellent video and the timing was perfect. I purchase a couple double mating nucs from Mann Lake and eager to give them a try. I'm a third-year beekeeper with 28 hives and want to promote desirable traits in my queens beyond walkaway splits. I haven't seen anyone else do a video on this topic. Thanks again!!
Nice to see you back here!! Saludos desde canarias

Yay great to see you posting again :-)
Devan is back!!!
Great comprehensive video! FYI, I've used Sharpie oil based paint pens marking queens for nine years without issue. I typically keep queens up to 4-5 years as long as they remain productive. Best, @HoneyOnWales
