How to Manufacture Fascination and Engineer Enthusiasm | Jason Goldberg | TEDxRaleigh

In this impactful and hilarious talk, full of “a-ha’s and ha-ha’s”, Jason Goldberg will share what he discovered due in large part to an unsupervised, sticky-fingered infant in a busy airport. What he realized helped him develop a powerful method to “hack fascination” with just three simple words that anybody can use in order to build stronger relationships, be more creative and to experience true fulfillment and joy in everyday life.
Jason Goldberg is a geek, turned comedian, speaker and entrepreneur. Throughout the course of a successful 13-year career in information technology and after leaving the corporate world to launch multiple start-ups, Jason found himself so inundated and overwhelmed by the speed and quantity of information and stimulation flying at him that he became uninspired, unengaged and unsatisfied with much of his day-to-day life. In an effort to rid himself of his boredom and apathy and to reclaim and reactivate his excitement for life, he set out to see if there was a way to engineer enthusiasm and manufacture fascination - even in situations where neither of those things were anywhere to be found.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Jason, this talk has me so inspired. You see for years (5 decades in fact!) I have been told to grow up, stop being a child... Having grown up in England, 'rain, rain, go away come again another day' being the norm every day that it rains not I am so enthralled with the day's start... 'Oh Cat, do grow up! It's only the day's start!' or more often 'Here she goes again...' and when I was teaching my growing children the wonders of the world, 'I don't know' :) became a mantra added to let's look it up when we get home (initially in the dictionary then on the internet.....!!) But you have just given me hope that this may infact be of some use to others along the line - brain juices flowing (and I'm racing through your book, Sunday can't put it down type read!) THANK YOU for being you and so glad to have met you and shared your energy and space. Sending love to thee xx

Finding this talk came at a time when I was very nearly getting back into the same pattern of behaviour, constant busyness, stress, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and out of control which resulted in me stepping away from corporate life to start my own business, a business that I would like to work for. So I started an online exercise in slowing down with a group of like minded people - the 30 day slow down challenge and we are in day 5. I am slowing down by taking a step back from my business so that I can get clarity on what I truly want to achieve, and how best my business can serve powerfully. Interestingly I have probably had my most productive week since starting the business six months ago. Thank you Jason for this reminder about slowing down, fascination and being comfortable with 'I don't know'.

I love that Diane! Slowing down is SO powerful! And I love how you have seen the sort of "counter intuitive" effect of getting MORE Done when we SLOW Down! Amazing! Thanks for sharing!

There's this buddhist temple that we went to a couple of years back, they call their dining area the "HALL OF SILENCE". Meditation while you eat, and thinking about the origins of what you ate and how thankful you are for being able to receive the gift of nourishment. It's a powerful practice which i think resonates with the fascination hack that was said on this talk. Great job, this was inspiring!

WOW! What a practice Carlos! I've done something similar at a meal and it COMPLETELY changed the experience. The taste, the texture, the smell, everything was just SO enhanced and SO different than when I'm rushing through my meals. I LOVE that you had that experience!

Amazing talk... our public education system is good for emphasizing our rational brain over our creative brain. I love your easy strategy to help us regain that creativity. It's interesting how you gained more appreciation for other people by exercising this natural creative behavior. 👍🏻

Great talk . ..The following resonated . .. and it felt liberating . . . .I can let go of always trying to achieve the same thing and trust the process . .. and actually influence the process a lot more than I thought I could. . .thank you! Heraclitus said, “No man ever steps into the same river twice for it is not the same river and he is not the same man” and that's one of the truth. I want you to get today is that no matter how many times you've experienced something in the world you will never experience it the same way twice and so if every experience has the potential to be a new experience then every experience has the potential to be fascinated.

I don't know is an opportunity for everything, thank you! I realize that everything changes, even this thought I am having right now, if I was to repeat this thought, it may be slightly different due to attention, retention, attitude, desire, ect, nothing ever stays exactly the same, except for one thing; knowing that you are alive never changes.

  • @TheJasonGoldberg

I absolutely know the feeling and have plenty of bouts with depression myself. For me, I know being gentle on myself and having compassion for what I'm going through is helpful to allow the depression to pass a bit sooner. Often times whats also really helpful for me is to go be of service to someone else. To get out of my own head and out of my own ego and see how I can make a difference for someone else. One way I love to do that is to go to starbucks, buy a $5 gift card and give it to someone that works there and tell them that THEY get to choose who to give it to, to pay for their coffee sometime during their shift. Now not only do I feel good for having done something nice for someone else, but its doubled because the employee feels great to be able to pay that forward. Sending you love Mark - the depression will always pass if we allow it and if you can be willing for the excitement to return whenever its ready, you may see it happen even faster!
