Most shops use a scanner/computer to release the electronic parking brake, when rear brakes need changing. Don't have a computer?..check out this video on how you can manually release it yourself.

its a dc motor a lot easier to just reverse polarity and not take it apart and deal with seal issues later. would not want mine done like that lol

Thanks for the video. I tried doing a pad and disc change and I manually opened the piston like you did, problem is when I try to put the motor back I just can't, it gets stuck in that o-ring which got loose after I removed the motors, no matter what I do when I try to put it back together it pinches the o-ring and it doesn't want to go past it. In your video you did it very easy but I'm struggling for few hours. Any suggestions?

U messed up. The process he showed u. Was the wrong way of doing. U never remove that epb unit. Unless you're replacing it and have a scan tool to function the piston in . This is the wrong way. And your breaks can malfunction

@@scraplifetrashtocash4551 What that has to do with my question? He made a good video about what it says in the title. My question was about something in this procedure and that is getting the damn thing back together, which I finally managed to do, after cleaning the backside part of the piston really good, dirt and stuff which usually gets so much built up that together with those o-rings break the case of the motor and you have to change it. My brakes work fine. You dont malfunction anything by doing this.

If you put in maintenance mode then you don't have to do this. This operation is for those that need a computer to put into maint mode. My Ford Edge it can be done very easily without hooking up to computer or scan tool.

Anyone watching this video. You can get away with doing the brake service this way because I work at Toyota and I see coworkers do this all the time but it’s more work on you. Hop in your car, follow the procedure on how to put your vehicle in maintenance mode and after that you can safely compress the pistons. -The only upside I can see why removing the rear parking brake is that you can manually wind in and see the pads make contact with the piston and caliper. Imagine if you didn’t have the pads aligned right or something majorly fucked and you use the maintenance mode procedure and once brake is engaged all hell brakes loose haha. Nah just double check & triple check and y’all will be good. Much love !

I'm telling u as an Ase certified mechanic. Don't mess with that epb moduler motor. We fixed cars that have had several components messed up when doing what this guy is telling u to do. U can burn thousands of dollars of components out. Have someone who knows what they're doing mess with this break system. Or buy a $350 code reader that has the program data to do it the correct way. These breaks can malfunction doing it this way. I can't believe a shop would post videos of him doing this to a customer's car. Read your owners Manuel. Each car has directions how to do this process.

Pull the plug out and put 12V across it would be the easiest way without the OBD computer. This seems like it could go badly wrong for the average dude on their driveway trying to save some money...

I hear what you're saying, and having higher end scan tools means I don't have to do this. But what he did was very similar to the procedure needed if the motor were to fail and require replacement. So at times even in a dealership this technique may be necessary. I suppose the main risk would be winding it too far either way, or putting it into a position that the motor wouldn't be able to recover from, or breaking a seal that later allows water inside. Even so, knowing many options for problem solving can come in handy.

I did a car like this last night. I saw that electronic parking brake module. I didn't know I had to remove it. Anyway the caliper cylinder was one of those screw ones. It had the fittings so I naturally used it. The cylinder went down, I put new pads on and placed it all back. The one thing was that the brakes felt spongy and didn't make friction with the caliper unless I squeezed it down all the way. It felt like it didn't have enough brake fluid and it needed to be bled.
