How to Manage Med School with a Chronic Disease

Many people have asked me about how I was able to get through medical school and residency while building two successful businesses and struggling with a chronic health condition. I've struggled with Irritable Bowel Disease, or IBD, since college, and I had my first flare when I was 18 years old. Here's what I've learned over the years from this experience. I hope that if you're going through something similar, you'll find this video valuable.

I did recently have a crisis earlier on in the year that left me with a painful hip dragonized as AVN well it did limit my mobility a whole lot especially after i just set new resolutions on how i wanted to achieve body physic by practicing more intensive focused Yoga poses at the gym or how id wanted to play in my universities tennis team, i must say ,I spent the semester depressed and sad on how this new change swayed me from my goals and the down side is i let it affect my ability to be a good student ,but your video has helped me realize that not all hope can be lost and it is possible to pick up the pieces ,which I will ,i'm currently going for physical therapy and so far i hope for improvement even with my walk id be absolutely gratefully.

Wow does she share her journey on social at all? I’m so desperately trying to find other med students/residents with chronic illness and how they manage it all. I’ve had Crohn’s since I was 8 and would love to try for med school, but am also considering PA school because of it since it seems to not be as strenuous of a schedule and might be better for my health.

Getting multiple chronic illnesses during my first two years of med school (Post-Concussion Syndrome, GERD) fundamentally changed how I viewed myself and the world. I've become a much more resilient, disciplined and grateful person. I might get absolutely wrecked by a clove of garlic and I can't eat for 5hrs before bed, but my body's strong enough to climb up mountains. Jumping too much might give me debilitating headaches for a week, but my mind is getting me through medical school. Things I used to take for granted are now incomparable blessings. It really sucks sometimes, but I wouldn't go back to the person I used to be.

As someone with a few chronic conditions who just started clerkships, I really appreciate these conversations. Just one thing to add, as soon as you enroll at your medical school, reach out to your student disabilities services or the equivalent. At my school, they have been instrumental in any accommodations, future planning, and advocating for me with my deans/professors/etc. ‘Work smarter, not harder’ is something I wasn’t able to do until I fully accepted my limitations and the situation I am in. Thanks Dr. Jubbal!

Thank you so much for sharing your story and being open about your situation. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I am in the same situation. Dealing with IBD and the infusion are kinda scary. I have been having headaches lately but Im trying to get it under control with Yoga and taking things easy. I work and go to school so it can be stressful sometimes and exhausting. The only thing I can say after all these years is that if you are healthy do not take it for granted. If you have a chronic condition do not give up. Your body is smart and it will adjust and you will be fine. And if you think is only you facing these situation, read the comments and you will be surprised how many others are in your situation.

Kevin. I can't thank you enough for making this video. I broke down multiple times, gasping for breath, sobbing every mins few before I was able to finish watching the video completely. Months of bottled up emotion gushing out right after you mentioned this 2:25. Although what I am experiencing are a lot of minor orthopaedic issues for the past couple years & and they've gotten worse since I stopped being active after I started preparing for USMLE Step 1. And I'm almost across the line I have my test in 4 days. The past couple days have been overwhelming not because of the test per se, but due to the worst flare up of sciatica I've gotten so far, which I picked up while I was recovering from my ACL reconstruction. I struggled to maintain the balance of being able to stay fit and still being productive, more than that I struggle opening up to people. I was looking to reach out to my med school friends this morning to get any advice on being able to cope with chronic conditions. But then I decided to focus on my exam instead, brushing it all under the carpet. When I opened up my lap to start studying again I see your video "I'm Flaring" I feel a whole better now. Keep doing what you're doing! There were so many things in this video that I could resonate with but one thing that sticks with me and this is what I had been telling myself throughout my preparation period & during post-surgery rehab. It's one of my mantras too, a quote from Bojack Horseman. "It gets easier, Everyday it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it everyday that's the hard part." Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH KEVIN! ❤🙏🏼

I was diagnosed with type 2 narcolepsy in my first term of medical school, and I had to take an *entire year* off just to figure out how to manage it with all the different meds. With a condition like narcolepsy, it’s hard to “sublimate” the frustration when you’re so debilitatingly sleepy all the time. Not even the anger could keep me awake. Anyway, wrapping up the 1st year of med school now. Really hope it stays under control. 🙏

I can't thank you enough for making a video like this on your channel. As someone living with Chron's, getting IBD introduces a lot of things you suddenly have to be conscious of under frequent medical attention. I'm sorry to hear you're in a rough patch again, but hopefully things get better.

Thanks for the honesty in the video. Your IBD videos have helped me recently (as well as you car videos). I’m going through a flare myself and just started Remicade like you. It’s working well for me. I was diagnosed around the same time you were at 21 in 2010 and went through nursing school and NP school while dealing with the disease. Definitely makes you more humble from the vantage point of having overcome a flare and like you said getting to enjoy a meal.

Thx for sharing your experiences. The most challenging thing living with Crohn’s for me has been the unpredictability. I was on tpn (total parenteral nutrition) for 7 years. Not eating helped with the pain, but I still had diarrhea 15+ times a day. It’s dang near impossible to get things done in that situation. Many people have much less severe IBD. There is a huge spectrum of severity. Having bowel resections over and over affect nutrition and absorption. But it did get better after about 20 years. Good luck to you!

Get your colonoscopy early everyone! Screening just changed to 45 yrs and those with family history should get checked earlier!

This was an interesting video and gave me a lot to think about. I have what my doctors believe is a rare genetic condition and I really struggle with how variable my health is and how that may impact my experience in med school. As an undergrad I've definitely used sublimation to motivate myself to excel. Also received comments from friends on my drive and achievements despite everything and I agree, it feels really good. I'd love to hear you talk more about disclosure of a chronic illness in med school. As you alluded to, it's a really difficult when sharing a diagnosis could be detrimental to your future goals.
