What makes you most nervous about starting your rotations? 😬🥼 If you already completed some or all of your rotations, what advice do you have for those who are entering the hospital for the first time?

The biggest obstacle would probably be how to contribute to research and prove to the PI that you're committed enough to actually be part of "the team".

The biggest obstacle for me is probably understanding the framework of research and how I can navigate my way through it to get where I want to be. Your course would be instrumental in help me with that!

As a med student, my biggest research obstacle is finding a particular topic to narrow down on. I was involved in some research projects back in high school which included already-picked and very focused subjects and since I went from high school straight into medical school I never developed the skills necessary to choose a particular research topic to explore

As a med student, finding research includes many cold emails and really putting yourself out there, sometimes starting a project idealized by the PI that is not set up to succeed without your full time involvement, issues with continuity/collaboration without asking too much of others, finding something relevant to your desired specialty, etc.

As an upcoming premed, my biggest obstacles would have to be taking that first initial step. I am really interested in the topics of Neuroscience and Neuro-trauma, however it is quite challenging to take that first initial step, especially in a field as research-heavy as neuroscience/neurology

As an M1, the biggest obstacles I am facing with research are figuring out when to devote time and effort to doing research as well as learning how to contribute to the project enough and work towards publication. It is difficult determining when in my day I can spend some time doing research and also knowing clearly what my tasks are to streamline the project to publication! Thanks so much MSI, you guys truly are the best.

The biggest obstacle in research is finding the right research mentor that fits your accountability style as well as your research background as well. I wasted a lot of my time in my M1 year trying to find the most interesting topic to look into but it ended up being a lot more upfront work that I honestly had time for. I had realized there is much better research that can take less effort and more analytical work that can be done remotely and may yield better results. Finding a mentor who understands a medical student's chaotic work load and style is difficult to find

(I’m a high school junior) Main issue is that there is very little guidance around how to do it. School is structured (do homework, study for tests, prep for SAT/ACT, etc.) whereas research just kinda exists out there in the ether as something you are supposed to do. It doesn’t help that I don’t have crazy money/family connections in the field but we all have to play the cards we are dealt and take personal responsibility despite obstacles. I’ve been working on some independent research but it feels like I’m going nowhere with it. Would love some guidance on this.

My biggest obstacle is finding a mentor in plastic surgery that is involved in clinical research. My home institution doesn't have an academic hospital (and by default, plastics department) so I want to develop a basic set of skills that will make my desire to assist on projects elsewhere a little more compelling. Thanks for your help in my journey thus far.

The biggest obstacle I face currently is finding a research topic that not only aligns with my interests and career goals, but also has clinical significance and potential positive impact on patient care. I endeavor to have my publications improve the lives of the populations I study, while I also expand my knowledge base and develop soft & hard skills. Finding research topics that align with those objectives have proven to be tedious.

The biggest obstacle was actually learning how to do research while in med school because In Saudi Arabia you go straight to med school after high school so I don't have any research experience and I'm learning medicine at the same time which is quite challenging balancing between these two subjects. on one hand you want to score well at exams and on the other hand you want to start doing research as early as possible to become a competitive applicant.

The biggest obstacles you are facing with research is finding good mentor because many people will tell collecting data is hard but if we put effort we can get .a good mentor will make the best output for the research .Mentor speaks with experience which is more useful for collecting correct data instead of many data

*What are the biggest obstacles you are facing with research?* The biggest obstacle that I have had with research is being able to invest what it seems as massive amounts of time to be able to self train in order to be part of a greater study. At first, it is both daunting and frusturating to be able to begin writing, on say, a case report, with little to no direction of the EMR. The other major challenge is being able to seek these opportunities out since they are/can be far and few in between or certain research groups are simply to full. Thanks so much for listening

Probably the biggest barrier I will have as an OMS-1 is the fact that I will not have access to an EMR as a part of my school, given it is not attached to a clinic or hospital. While I can do basic science, I will not be able to interact with clinical data the same way I might if I had access to an EMR. Likewise, because I do not have a hospital or clinic with the school, I will not see as many specialties and not have as wide a breadth of options of research I can get involved with.

The biggest obstacle I’m facing to research as an incoming M1 is trying to figure out what I actually want to research. Over the last year, I worked in thoracic oncology, and I really want to continue my research in that. I'm finding it difficult to juggle lectures, small group discussions and imcqs as well as staying up to date on the material that's been covered while incorporating the new material assigned every day. Obviously this falls under time management or lack there of but as a 2nd year medical student whatever time I can carve out of my day I've been allocating to step prep so I can't see how I can fit research into my schedule as things currently stand. I know it's doable as others before me have done it I just don't know how to incorporate it into my schedule without revamping my study habits - I fear that changing anything that's working may disrupt my performance and ability to pass.

As an incoming medical student with an interest in orthopedic surgery, one of my greatest obstacles to research lies in finding a research mentor who genuinely cares about teaching and guiding medical students. Having a mentor who is not only knowledgeable and experienced in orthopedic research but also passionate about imparting that knowledge to eager students is crucial. Such a mentor would not only provide invaluable insights into the intricacies of orthopedic research but also inspire me to actively contribute to the field.
