I wanted a new, thinner, smaller parting tool. Here is how I made two versions. One heat treated and the other simpler and pre-hardened!

As a reasonably newby to wood turning, I found this to be a great help and will assist me in at least sharpening my tools correctly and maybe making my own. Thank you.

Hello Jim, that was interesting. Did you say O1 tool steel is suitable for water quenching? I might have picked you up wrong, so I'm wondering why you quenched your blade in oil. Best regards. 🤔

O-1 means “oil harden”. A-1 means “air hardening”. Raise the temperature of the tool To the point where it is no longer magnetic them immediately quench in oll. I use peanut oil: smell good and doesn’t flame up too much.
