Working at a movie theater myself. Fun fact: If you were to make the popcorn to little to no oil the flavored salt (we use the exact same brand as shown in this video) flavacol actually will leave the popcorn white despite the bright yellow-orange color. Popcorn/concessions are expensive in general because that is what pays for the theater to function and is used to pay the employees. The movie tickets you buy all proceedings go to the production that made the film. Not the theater.

As someone who worked at a movie theater: you’ve got the recipe pretty much perfect. The only differences being that the theater I worked at portioned everything for a larger kettle, as well as using canola popping oil instead of the coconut. Also, a side note: the Flavicol is quite potent, be careful about how much you use - too much or too little will easily ruin a whole batch of popcorn.

Not bad. Glazed popcorn should use a different type of kernels, though. You want "mushroom" corn for glazed popcorn and "butterfly" corn for butter popcorn. Mushroom corn is sturdier, while butterfly corn is tastier and has a higher expansion ratio. Weaver makes the best popcorn, and is used by most concession operators.

  • @tjw2469

Mushroom shaped popcorn most commonly used for galzed baged popcorn because it is easier to coat sugar after poped for fresh made popcorn, it doesn't matter because poping and coating happened at the same time during the process

not really, the key is the flavacol. lots of theaters use canola oil, i personally use peanut oil. coconut oil will keep the popped corn crispier for longer, and some sketchy operations actually bag up popped corn and serve it to customers days later.

If you want a cheaper, and (for lack of a better words) healthier alternative to Flavacol, you can use a little bit of turmeric while cooking the popcorn (not too much as the flavor is strong and it could stain not only your clothes and skin but your pot as well) and you get the color and buttery taste of the movie theater version.

Yeah, this ratio is terrible. 1 Tsp should NEVER be used with just 1/4 a cup of popcorn. I often use anywhere from 3/4 Tsp to 1/2 Tsp in my Whirley Pop, and that's with 1/2 a cup of kernels! Even 1/2 Tsp can be fairly potent.
