That's a really great design. You can also just take about five minutes to carve a spile from a small branch or twig and it will work just as good. Also bones work as long as you shape them and sterilize them. And both of those r completely free .

Thanks for confirming my suspicion, I wanted to make a batch of beer with sap . This morning I grabbed what I had, a roll of 5/16 od 3/16 id food grade clear hose and a 4 gallon bucket w/ lid , drilled 9/32 holes in the tree and in the lid and the sap is flowing. Thanks again!

Tornado came through Grand Rapids, Michigan. Top half of half a tree broke and fell on my house, smashed through my porch roof. Never payed attention to the two trees in my yard, looked at the leaves falling through my ceiling and noticed they looked like maple leaves. I said no way....did a quick Google lense search and what do ya know.. maple trees! Want to tap them immediately!

Pretty cool, I might go with a bit more heavy duty hook, that size has given me problems with houseplants before. They were made of weak wire and bent. It might have been a bad shipment or whatever but something to be mindful of.

you should bend the hook in to an eye around the bucket handle. Very cool way to tap a tree ! would you get more sap if you drilled the second hole on the back side of the tree and used more tubing? Thanks for this tip ! 8)

all i did was take a tree branch, slightly larger than 3/8", cut the branch in 3" pieces. then took my 3/8" drill bit and drilled out the branch. drilled into my tree and tapped in the branch piece. drilled a hole in a 650gram yogurt container, 1" from the top. slid the container onto the branch. used the container lid to keep crap out of the sap. nice youtube channel, keep up the good work. now to watch your boil down vide.

Is the blue tubing food grade? I can find super cheap tubing too but last year I used some clear tubing from hardware store, maybe plumbing line, not sure, but I don't think it was food grade because we could taste something off. Please explain what this tubing is and where to get it. I didn't understand who we should ask for left over pieces. Also, I've been reading how much better 3/16 tubing is. Is this just for large sugarers who yield lots of sap and need long lines? Does it matter the diameter of tubing on trees that are about 4 feet wide? I plan to put three taps in again, connect them with t joints, and join them all to one exit line into our 5 gallon bottles. Thank you for any help. Great job!!

Pretty sure it's PEX tubing. It's used for water pipes in homes so I would think it would be considered food grade but by that standard lead would be food grade lol PEX is easy to find in about any hardware store. Usually you can buy a small stick of it or a roll. Some do by the foot. Happy tapping.

Man, we in the South are so jealous! The one thing we wish we had, but CAN'T have, on the homestead is maple trees for syrup!! And I didn't expect the syrup to look so clear as it came out of the tube...it looked like nectar, and I bet it was delicious. Love the frugality of your method, too!

@@creatednordestroyed5339 yes we're tapping black walnut this year, not sure what trees you have down south that could work, hickory is done too. The sap is what is coming out of the tree so it is clear, you have to boil it down to get the syrup, so it is about a 50:1 or more reduction, so 50 gallons of sap will only yeild you 1 gallon of syrup after a lot of boiling, so keep fuel cost in mind

Nice Idea with the flex tubing. I have been doing low budget sugaring for a few years using hard pvc type pipe (water grade) and Arizona Ice tea container (1 gal). I drill a hole in the container the same size as the pipe. then I am able to slide the container over the tube. I have already started seeing ants on the container, but they can't get in with tight fit and the cap on. I find the set up is cheap, it's the boiling down that's expensive. What are you using to boil down your sap?

I have 3 maples, at least 3' in diameter, with 8 taps. Just finished over a gallon of syrup tonight. We get over a gallon a day of sap out of each tap on warm days, just under a gallon on cool days. If the temp gets below freezing, nothing. As soon as it warms up the sap flows again.

You could have gotten better results for the same price or less by calling a dealer such as myself and getting the correct tools and not have killed the tree in the process. Tree is too small for 2 taps. Also if done with a proper spile, you wouldn't need the hook, which damages the tree and introduces bacteria.
