How to make Soviet filters safe to use

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to make Soviet filters safe to use.
Soviet filters as we all know contain asbestos, however a lot of people want to use these filters as part of costumes.
I have devised a method to make these filters safe.
You will need to buy a P3 cotton filter, cut it to shape and install it either in the 40mm mask filter intake port or in a 40mm hose filter intake port, this will increase the breathing resistance of the mask but any asbestos or charcoal dust will stick to the P3 filter and it will not enter your lungs.
In this video I demonstrate how to do it with a ShM-41 respirator (similar to a GP-5), this method will work on any Soviet respirator however except for the PBF.
Obviously there are still some risks assosiated with this, and using a modern filter is still safer and will work. Decades old Soviet filters are long since expired so there is little probability they will actually still work, however if you want a cosmetic filter that's original and still want to be safe, this method will work for you.
Demonstrated in the video with an EO-16 filter, but this will work just fine with any Soviet 40mm filter or mask combination.

    IMPORTANT: Check the instructions for your P3 filters to see which way they should go, the page selling these gave the wrong instructions, the text side should face towards you, not the filter.

    The rule for the text side for ALL filters is that you must be able to see it while used. The pink pad filters 3M have text outside; the inner pad for the canister is intended to be put with the face towards the main filter, since you read the reference when you put the pad inside the cover kzread.info/dash/bejne/p55mqLdrn7DHcZM.html.

    I followed this advice and filled the top of the canister with a few pads, No way any asbestos can get through. I did it so I can wear the mask with filter for whatever reason. Also my filters are "newer" so they don't have any rattling and can't smell anything through them so if I truly had to use it in a serious situation I wouldn't hesitate.

    Bought a MC-1 cuz I gotta work through the virus. Once the new canister I bought gets old I'll keep it on for decoration and cut up my n95 stuff for it. I could probably make a couple disks per cotton mask and either double up on them or get two days out of one mask before having to sanitize them again. Thanks for making this video, it saved me having to buy some obnoxious 3M adapter and new filters for the thing.

    Good idea if you want to use the filter, you could always double up or do both ends of the tube, or do the tube method and sticking them in the filter hole for maximum protection, that's if you can still breathe through it with that many, i have no idea.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    Yeah you could do it but the breathing resistance would get harder, I found when I did my test video with the mask, the big filter combined with the P3 insert made the air resistance quite challenging to actually breath with, but yeah a smaller filter with two P3 discs on either side of the hose would work well.

    Hello Friend. Thank you for all of your informative videos that you've made so far, as I have watched most of your gas mask related videos. I just wanted to mention that according to data that I had gathered by checking 3Ms own website, and also companies that actually work on removing Asbestos insulation from old houses, the go to filter is 3M P100, which is graded for filtering Asbestos and Lead. The one which you're using might not be the safest option to pick up and use. P100 is the highest respiratory level protection that we can get, and a P100 graded particular filter blocks 99.9% of particles.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    Weaponsandstuff93 Thanks for the response mate, good to know that. It's kind of confusing with companies use different names for same type of standards/protection in the US and EU. And you are right, I had been checking for those infos in American sites. I'm sorry for the comment that I sent, you are more informed.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    No problem, it's an easy mistake to make, I like the P1-3 system as it's part of the ABEK system which is becoming a widely adopted system for filters, the higher the number the better the protection that section it offers, so each letter means the filter blocks/filters a certain threat and then a higher number means the filter does it better So an A1P2 filter is not as good as an A2P3 filter. It's also nice having colour coded filters.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    Totally depends how much the filter leaks, if the filter doesn't leak never, if the filter leaks then it will clog fairly fast, but that stuff would have gone into your lungs.

    Weaponsandstuff93 interesting. So in theory would it be possible to “use up” all the asbestos within the filter simply by using this improvised method and constantly breathing through it whilst replacing the small filters when necessary? And by “use up”, I mean the original soviet filter is now asbestos free?

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    Not really, the asbestos is woven into the filter fabric, if all the asbestos came out of the filter, the filter would just collapse in on itself.

    Hey weaponsandstuff93, great videos. I have a question for you. A while back I bought a gp5 filter off the internet and used it blow cigarette smoke into to mask the smell. I blew into it (never sucked) about 30 times before I found out it contains asbestos. Should I be worried about any exposure to asbestos? Thanks.

    @@Weaponsandstuff93 thanks for the reply. Someone on reddit had told me that old gas mask filters were a cheap way to reduce the smell of cigarette/weed smoke. It did work well but I'd rather not risk the chance of running into lung problems from asbestos.

    really cool idea, but I doubt I'll ever use it. I'm more likely to just tape the hose to the inside of the bag or something similar. would it work for costumery if you took filters out of an american M17 and put them in a soviet PBF?

    Say I have a question, in the video here, you say that a P3 filter is required to block aspestos. Doing a little searching on amazon, I have not been able to find p3 filters like the one in the video. Instead there are these P95 filters. I don't think these have the same level of protection as the P3 but can anyone confirm? Also, where should I buy these filters from?

    I've been wondering for awhile and it's probably a dumb question as if it where so easy someone would of done so already. But what if you put Teflon tape (the white tape you use to prevent old faucets and stuff to stop leaking) on a 40MM NATO standard filter and put it in an old Warsaw gas mask? Like a gp-5. Would that work?

    Do you think that it's really that big of a deal to use the filters that only have 1-3% asbestos in them with a gp-5? Because with a gp-5 your face isn't really pressed directly against the filter like with a M40 so the chances of that fiber going directly into your face is rather low, right? Not really sure how asbestos behaves, I assume it floats around like common dust.
