A great easy to follow recipe! My dad was a diner chef until he was 82. After working with food all day, he come home from work and wanted a simple meal. Being catholic, my mom always made non-meat dinners on Fridays, My dad always look forward to my mom's Friday night salmon cakes. Your recipe reminds me of my moms. If my dad was still alive and watch this video he would say: Bravo!

Sweet Mary, I made this last night and those salmon patties were the best salmon patties I ever had. My husband asked for seconds. I used your video on how to make bread crumbs too. We have 1 patty left and today we will have salmon tacos for lunch. Thank you for your sweetness and gentleness. We need more like you in the world.

Wonderful ... as to the bones... they are a healthy addition... adds calcium.... if some are not soft, pick them out... and mortar and pestle them into a paste, then add it back to the Salmon.

I never thought of that. I hate tinned salmon because of them. I’m one of those people that will retch if I get a fish bone of eggshells in my food.

This looks so Good!! I'll need to try making it. My mom used to make a salmon loaf, when I was a little girl. She made creamed peas as a sauce for over it. I never liked salmon or ANY creamed vegetables, but I Loved this recipe!! I never could find her recipe, unfortunately. Hoping this will bring back memories. Thanks, Mary!!

My mom handed down her recipe, which is very similar to yours, it’s a family favorite for the generations. We drain the salmon and mix in a bit of mashed potatoes, an egg, salt & pepper then coat with egg & breadcrumbs. I like your idea of using mayo because egg dipping gets messy. Thanks for a great video and a new idea! - Mary

It's so interesting to see how other people make these old recipes. My family used a bit of corn meal instead of bread crumb or crackers. Never any coating on the outside. My people kept the skin and bones and used a bit of baking powder to add a touch of lift. Most often shaped into a triangular croquette shape but sometimes a patty. Comfort food, makes me remember the wonderful people who cared for me growing up.

Good evening, i am native and i remember my mothers recipe for salmon. Canned salmon or lftovers. The canned salmon we left in the bones and skin. Adds so much more flavour. Instead of using bread crumbs, mother would use mashed potatoes with an egg, then dredge in seasoned flour and fry in a fat. Was absolutely delicious. I cant have potatoes anymore so i substitute for a mild tasting bean. Mash the beans, add egg(onions if you like). I am still looking for something to dredge in besides flour. It is not the same as mashed potatoes but is still quite good. Have a blessed day.

Hi Mitch, so glad you like this recipe. Yes, when it comes to soaking beans it’s very interesting. Basically by soaking them, you are starting to ferment them which makes them more digestible. Be sure to change the water over the course of the soaking time if you go for 48 hours. (And... I didn’t mention this in the video, but you can soak them in plain water or in salted water. You’re basically making a brine. Just be sure to rinse them very well before you cook them.) and heads up....There will be a slight odor. Be sure to check out the website “cultures for health”. They have wonderful information about all types of things including soaking beans. The cookbook “nourishing traditions” by Sally Fallon also talks about long soaks for beans and is a wonderful resource if this type of thing interests you. Do you enjoy making traditional foods? Hi Mary, I'm loving all your videos, I really enjoyed the one with you and your son. I've been making salmon fish cakes for years, your right about how great they are for a mid week meal, I usually make mine once a week when I have left over mash potatoes, I add capers, spring onions, horseradish cream and dill, I make a batch of panko and keep it in the freezer for when I need to use it to coat my fish cakes or anything else. Thanks Mary your such a lovely lady sending you lots of love from a very cold UK.

He's already taller than my mother but that's common since she's under five feet tall. His birthday is in the late part of this month. I'm nearly caught up on here from not having internet access for 7 days.

Yummmm! I made these for lunch today with a side of saeurkraut and it was delish! They were quick and easy to make. I often have issues with things like this falling apart in the pan, but these held up very nicely and had a nice crispy exterior 😋😋😋

You are adorable!! i will have to come back and watch again when I am ready to try this. The last time I tried making salmon patties they were so gross even I couldn't eat them (and I am NOT a fussy eater which is how I got to be a 60 year old woman who STILL can't cook!) My roommate flung them unceremoniously in the trash as well. He blamed it on the salmon being from a can, but it was the same brand you just used and I'm sure it was something that I did or didn't do. I really enjoy your warmth and charm. Thanks for posting cooking videos for people like me who are "kitchen-challenged."

I usually use mashed potato instead of breadcrumbs, I like the idea of coating them with mayo. I also add some capers and finely chopped cornichons.
