I used King Oscar sardines in olive oil, 2 tbsp of sweet onion, 4tbsp fresh chopped parsley, lemon, and regular mustard, with 1/8 salt. My four year old boy loved this dip on Wasa multigrain crispbread. My six year old boy ate it with Murray's Italian mix Olives from Kroger Deli. And the few bites I got to eat, I ate with sauted radish leaves. Next time I will make a double batch! I can't believe my picky four year old who normally lives off sugar puffs said he would even eat sardines for BREAKFAST! It also helps that Daddy was working out and told Bennie that it would make him grow muscles. Lol Thank you for this video! We are hooked on canned sardines now!

I grew up eating anchovies, kippers, pickled herring and sardines. In college a friend introduced me to sardines in mustard sauce. He put it on a toasted bagel with a slice of raw onion and a slice of swiss cheese on top. Then he put it in the toaster oven to melt the cheese. It was delicious!

I love your recipe and can't wait to try it, coming from such a sardines connoisseur. My go-to Sardines quick lunch is a can of sardines in oil with diced shallots, a little squeeze of lemon juice and maybe some dried wild oregano - on toast or flat bread. Simplicity itself and still allowing the aromas of the seas to come through. :-) Quality canned sardines with shiny skin and solid yet delicate flesh, it's just amazing the unique sweet umami flavour they possess. It's one of those ancient foods of the world from antiquity till today.

My dad always ate them right out of the can, with some saltines on the side. I would eat them with him, but as an adult, I can't eat them like that anymore. This sounds wonderful, and I do also love onion. Since I have many times been prescribed vit D, I have tried to eat more foods with it, but haven't done a good job of it. (I do go out in the sun more with less sunscreen, people will tell you I am the tannest I have ever been. I am still really pale naturally, but the contrast between now and 5 years ago is noticeable, so I AM trying to get more vit D!)

Sardines are a fantastic (and usually cheaper) way to get omega 3s. They also have omega 6s and calcium, mostly in the bones, and are great for cats in smaller servings. I’ve never been able to make/find the bones palatable for me because they really like staying together, so I just open it at the place it was originally gutted and it splits so I can pull nearly the whole spine out in one go. Mine don’t have heads and only sometimes have tails, I don’t know if that’s common or not but it makes deboning easy. I like sardines in Mayo as a tuna salad equivalent, but the sardines are around $.99-$1.19 for a responsibly sourced can whereas the same amount of tuna is $1.39 for the cheap brand that aren’t.

Perfect timing for this video. I was searching through my pantry the other day and ran across a multi pack of sardines that I bought on a whim because my mother used to eat them straight out of the can. Emotional buying I think it’s what they call that lol. And what a perfect way to use my herbs that I’ve freeze dried this summer thank you for your time and trouble with the video.

Hi Mary, I grew up in England eating canned sardines and since marrying and living in Spain I love to eat them fresh, quickly roasted on a open fire with some bread and a glass of wine... unfortunately this year their prices have skyrocketed so I am back to canned. I really like this recipe, must say that I mixed it with some cold pasta as a salad and it was delish! Thanks for sharing and many greetings from Spain 🥰❤

Do you buy them fresh at a fish market? I have never seen them any way but canned. I am in the US, have lived in several regions. Now I don’t get to the actual fish market much, I just rely on the grocery store.

@@lilolmecj Hi! Here in Spain we have lovely fish markets but in almost every grocery store there's a fresh fish section next to packaged fish fillets and frozen fish, we are very lucky with these options, and they will skin, cut and even debone most fish according to their size and this service is included in the marked price! The best time of the year over here to buy sardines is from May up to October...I hope that this year I will be able to buy some at a decent price 🙏

@@crisfernandez477 that is really interesting, at any medium to large grocery store there will be a fish section where a butcher staff wraps whatever you choose. I don’t know if they will debone etc. I have never asked. I would love to visit Spain someday.

I often wonder if you are/were a Home Economics teacher, but today I suspect you are a salesman, because you totally sold me on trying this sardine recipe! I’ve never even tried a sardine, but I now believe I’m missing out and plan to try this recipe this weekend. Thank you.
