How to Make Roman Shades Using Iron-on-Roman Rib Tape

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Notes: Add a cord cleat to each window blind for safety. Operating cords must have a default length of 40 percent of the blind height according to Section 4.3.2 of ANSI/WCMA-2018 (previously unlimited). And a warning label must depict more graphically the strangulation hazard associated with cords (5.1).
How to make roman shades using iron-on-roman rib tape will walk you through the steps required to make your very own roman shades. We’re going to show you how to take measurements, how to sew them up, how to attach rings and hardware and how to install them in your window. A full materials list is located at the end of the video so you can purchase fabric and supplies to do it yourself.
For your roman shade, choose from hundreds of great home décor fabrics at www.sailrite.com.

    I've used the rib tape before and had bad luck, but I'm considering trying it again. When I used it, the tape did not stick very well and came off in several areas, even after ironing a lot. Is there a trick to getting it to stay better? I use regular Roclon lining fabric and blackout. Also will this tape hold up for years? I'm curious. I don't want customers coming back to me saying it fell off. I'd prefer not to sew it on also bc I wouldn't want the stiching in front.

I've done some research and calculating of costs and unfortunately I've found that I can purchase high quality Roman Shades much, much cheaper than I can make them myself using your hardware. Of course, If I want something 'Custom', where I absolutely love the fabric and I must have it, then there's no alternative than to make them myself. Thank you for an informative video though.....

    Hi Abbi, Yes, you are correct the iron on tape does not hold (stay glued) well when washed via a washing machine. I recommend washing by hand. The Velcro is sewn in place, so it will not come off. In the future we may do a cascading roman blind project.

    Is it necessary to put the extra row of rod pocket tape and rods which do not have the curtain rings attached? Does the fold need weighting down? It is a good instructive video. Thanks.

  • @SailriteDIY

    @SailriteDIY

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Kate Rosenwald The dowels or ribs should allow the curtain to fold better, but that does not mean it will not fold without them. So, you can try it without at each non-ring area. The weighted rod is needed to make the cord lock work correctly.

    I’ve ordered my supplies from Sailrite and have them for my Roman shade project and I’m excited to get started! After watching your great video several times, I have a question. I went to Sailrite’s website to the fabric calculator and on section C 8 inches has already been entered for the standard stacked shade height. What is a stacked shade height and where is it in the Roman shade?

  • @SailriteDIY

    @SailriteDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    The stacked height is approximately the size of the height of the shade when it is pulled all the way up. It can be modified, but I do not recommend it as it will add or remove ribs until the desired height of the shade is reached and sometimes it does not look as good if modified, in my opinion. So... I never change it and I recommend you do not as well.

    Awesome, very helpful video! I have a question. I am making insulated roman shades for my leaky windows, and plan to add a layer of fleece in the middle. Should i make that layer the same width as the back piece, or the same as the width as the folded front piece will be, (after it's sewn onto the back piece, and pressed into place with the same amount of material on each side of the smaller back piece? I want it to go all the way to the edge, to better block drafts. Also, do I need ribs, or can I just sew the rings onto all of the layers of the shade, in the appropriate places? Thank you.

  • @SailriteDIY

    @SailriteDIY

    5 ай бұрын

    If the fleece is not too thick I would cut it to be the same size as the decorative fabric. Then you would sew all three layers together like what is shown at 9:36 min. However, if it is rather thick you would have a fairly thick edge, since it would fold to the backside. Without the ribs, the shade may not fold as nicely along the edge.

  • @kaylhs

    @kaylhs

    5 ай бұрын

    @@SailriteDIY Thank you so much for your quick response! I am so excited to get started on these. It's not super thick fleece. I think I will try it without the ribs, and try to "train the fabric to fold" nicely. I would like to be able to wash them gently. I can always iron rib tape on later if needed. Do you prewash your fabric, if it is cotton, to account for shrinkage?

  • @cathy8640

    Your video says rings can be sewn either at the top or bottom of the rib tape. What's the difference? Will it fold differently, depending on which way you do it?

  • @SailriteDIY

    @SailriteDIY

    I like to sew the rings on at the bottom, so the ring does not pull only on the fabric that is sewn, but also along the rib or dowels. But it can be done both ways.

    Very good explanation. I have the roman shades, but they do not require a cord or to be rolled in any way ( they have small magnetic bands and you can ply them by making them attach to the next segment - I hope i am making sense ). My question would be - how could this shades be attached directly on the window frame ? I am interested in doing this because my windows open inwards and it would be a lot easier to open/close if the shades would move together with the window frame ? Any ideas ? Thank you !

    Hi, I just made a roman shade for my kitchen door and I purchased a 3-cord cord lock that is a little different than the one shown in your video. I am certain that I have threaded it correctly but it just will not "grip" the cords and hold the shade up. Are there other things I need to make sure I've got correct, like size of the cord I'm using, etc, or any other advice you might could give me to figure out what is wrong with my shade? Thank you

    If you used a different cord lock than what Sailrite sells you may need to contact the place where you purchased them directly for help. If you were using ours using the correct size cord, which is dependent on the number of cords used in the lock, is rather important. If you can't get help from where you purchased them, just order our cord locks from Sailrite and we will offer all the help in the world.

    Thanks for your reply. Meanwhile I did go ahead and purchase larger or heavier cord and installed that and it's working perfectly. I'm only using two cords and I guess that must have been part of the deal. I have a three-cord lock but only 2 cords and I think the cord I was using was just too thin or light weight or whatever. It's working perfectly now though so its all good.

    This may seem an obvious question, but you had brought up taking them down to be washed... How does one do that with this design? Do you have to restring it each time in order to do so, or do the rings holding the cording come apart (like a key ring) so you can just detach/reattach the fabric to wash them?

  • @SailriteDIY

    @SailriteDIY

    +E Nunya Shades that are complicated in construction, like this shade, typically should not be washed. Washing may cause the iron on rib tape to come apart. We recommend they be vacuumed instead of washing.

    Sailrite But at the beginning of the video, the gentleman specifically states that the reason for choosing the iron tape was for easy removal of the ribs for washing... That was, to my understanding, why there is an alternate video showing the ribs being sewn in. Hope you can clear this up for us :)

    +E Nunya You are correct, but after washing my shades I found the iron on rib tape does not hold up as well as expected in a washing machine. So... I asked some experts about how to wash complicated shades and they all responded; You don't wash them in a washing machine unless you want to do repairs afterwards. Some said you can hand wash them carefully, if absolutely required.

    In the video we used a 100% cotton fabric and tried to anticipate possible shrinkage when steam ironed, so 8" made sense for us. I would rather see you have slightly too much length. Then when it comes time to create the finial hem you can cut off extra or shift the size of the hem to take up the excess fabric.

    Couldn't the dowels be used instead of the tape if there was a pocket sewn at the end of the sleeve for the dowel with one end open and hooded so that it would stay put but also intentionally be revealed to remove the dowel when laundering the shade? (Btw I'm making up these words lol I don't remember the proper ones 😂)

    Yes, it could. However, if the rings were installed under the ribs (which would not be supported in the center of the shade, since the ends are the only means of support) you may find that the ribs bend upwards when the shade is lifted not creating a nice straight folds in the shade when lifted. So... you may have to sew the rib in place close to the lift line to keep that from happening.

    you guys are the best but too bad some things you sell are way more expensive then elsewhere, you might do better to offer some less expensive things like your cord lock is $8.00 more then the 2.00 one that can be found on Etsy or even the 2 pack I bought for 5.00 on ebay {thats about 2.50 each} Im sure the quality is better but people are making these them self for a reason.... BC it's cheaper so you better believe that people are shopping around for their pieces and parts.I suggest you offer something like a cord lock for a few $ cheaper then what you are, even $5.00 for a cord lock is tolerable $10.00 is not.Just some thing to think about .

    How do you use shroud tape with the dowels? I have grandchildren and want the shades to be child safe.

    We are planing on making a brand new video in the next month that will show this better. Be checking back or subscribe so you will be notified when it comes out. It will be a roman shade with a clutch roller system. It will use a ladder shroud tape.
