Metrowiec is a delicious blast from the past. This cake was extremely popular in Poland, in the 80’s. It graced Polish tables during birthday parties, name day celebrations and other family gatherings. I was a kid then, so my memory of metrowiec was seeing it from the table's edge. Just imagine being a child and looking just above the table to see this really, really, long cake! To me, the prettiest part is when it is cut diagonally, and the chocolate and vanilla cake pattern in each slice is revealed. By the time I was tall enough to see the cake from above, it fell out of fashion. No harm done, as metrowiec is plainly finished with rich chocolate glaze and no additional decorations. It’s all about the flavor. Both elegant and simple.
