The best coffee i have ever drank was, indeed italian. It was at a bar in northern Italy. I ordered an esspreso. This girl at the bar gave me a glass of water and started preparing my coffee. Didnt get it why. As she gave me my coffee, she told me to rinse my mouth with water, then drink the coffee. The rich taste was incredible, and it woke me up in an instant. Real coffee means 30ml in a small cup, not 500ml in a green paper glass.

i am an american living in italy more than 12 years now and have never seen anyone clean the grinds out of the coffee basket by blowing on the end of it. i had to run to the kitchen immediately and try it. and it works!

For years I cleaned the moka pot with hot water only. I got a new stainless steel pot and have found the coffee is noticeably better if I keep the pot very clean. It is a question of personal taste but I just want today's coffee, not ten years of oily build up. I understand why many only rinse them out with hot water but personally I do not like the effect. Those oils do affect the taste. Obviously, many like the taste it creates. Romans were fond of lead cookware because of the slight sweetness lead imparts. 😂

OK, a seasoned moka is one thing, but changing the rubber gasket and metal filter once a year is a good idea - there's a reason that they sell them in every supermarket in Italy. :)

After rinsing with hot water should the parts be dried with a towel, or can they just be left separately on the drainer to air dry? I have read that leaving them to dry can damage the aluminium over time.

I've been using my moka pot wrong all this time. MFW you blow the basket...... do you start with room temperature water? other video I watched recommends to start with hot water so you don't burn the coffee. I'm confused

Not sure - probably hard water. Try a light solution of water and a cap-full of vinegar - brew two pots of that (without coffee), then another pot without the vinegar - then finally coffee.... Hope that helps!

Tianhaku I sometimes reduce the water, with no ill effects. But never reduce the coffee in the basket. You will not get an even hot water surge through the coffee. I was warned but tried anyway. It was not a good cup of coffee.
