How to make hydrogen bubbles you can burn in your hand

How to use a hydrogen gas generator to produce explosive bubbles!
Hydrogen bubbles are produced by the single replacement (displacement) reaction between zinc metal and hydrochloric acid. The bubbles can be used in several ways to demonstrate the combustion of hydrogen in the presence of oxygen.
They can be exploded in the hand (as long as your hand is wet!), on the surface of the beaker, or by releasing them and letting them float upwards into an ignition source.

    Looks like, I am in front of a chemistry Fire eater Well sir if we try with aluminium instead of zinc would the same happen ?🤔 What did you prefer in this reaction concentrated or dilute H2SO4

  • @rmahaffy

    @rmahaffy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, aluminium would work too! You can use some balls of aluminium foil. As for the acid concentration, between 3 and 6 mol/L is the sweet spot.

    Don't we need to put on gloves in our hands? Otherwise it's more likely to get burns....

    Good question! As long as your hands are very wet (and you are working away from flammable clothing etc), it is quite safe to ignite a small amount of bubbles on your hand. :)
