Making Chloroform
Ғылым және технология
In this video we make chloroform from bleach and acetone. The yield is a little lower than expected because I used an 11% excess of acetone, which is too much.
This method was taken from KZread user UC235. A link to his video is here: • Preparation of Chloroform

I'm on here cuz of the Caylee Anthony case back in 2008-2009/10. They said in her trial she'd looked up how to make chloroform so I thought hmmm, let's see how hard that would be. My afterthought now after watching this is I don't think Casey Anthony is smart enough to do this plus she'd have to have access to all these lab tools & cylinders imo.

It may seem ingenious, and I'm definitely not trying to sound elitist or haute in the least by saying this, but it really is basic sophomore /junior collegiate level chemistry. Maybe even high school level, depending on when and where [and if] you attended high school! Not you specifically, but the ones behind you and those over to your right! I'll quote one of the titans. [No, not G. Roddenberry or Malozzi - this time] - This is from Arthur C. CLARKE: "Any sufficient technologically advanced civilization -when encountered by a comparably primitive culture-would be indistinguishable from magic!" So maybe it's something like that!

I have an undergraduate minor in chemistry from way back when the dinosaurs roamed. Now, being retired, I have a lot of time to do amateur chemistry. But I forgot a lot of things and so I started watching KZread videos and reviewing. I enjoy your videos because you do some real chemistry. You don't just mix things based on some recipe like in a cooking show. Sometimes you show the mechanisms and most of the time you show the stoichiometry. And it is at this level that I have a small problem with your numbers. In your molarity calculation you use the conversion factor of 2400 ml per mole of gas at 1 atmosphere and 68°C. I worked through your calculations and came up with a 12.6M NaOCl concentration, not the1.26M concentration you obtained. In fact, the correct conversion is 240 ml (24 DL) per mole of gas. Using the correct conversion yields the correct 1.26M concentration. (That's ok though. You were only off by a zero.) Also, I searched through about 200 comments hoping someone else who is serious about chemistry would catch this mistake but no one did! So, my caution to viewers is: PAY ATTENTION!! This is CHEMISTRY not the Great British Bake Off! Have fun, but never forget that this IS DEADLY SERIOUS business!!! One more correction (of a commenter, not you): Someone stated that the correct conversion was 22.4 DL/mole NOT 24 DL/mole. That is only correct at STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure of 0°C & 1 atmosphere). However, at 20°C, 24 DL/mole IS CORRECT. Let's see more mechanisms please and keep up the good work you are doing.

i have so many great memories watching your channel nate. its crazy that i just started watching them out of random interest when they popped up on the home page all those years ago, i was literally 14 or 15 at the time. Im 23 and on my way to get my masters in biology and veterinary medicine. Ive takn countless chemistry classes now, and your videos have only grown more entertaining with time as i now understand them in full. You do some awesome and really fun work, and you really honestly help me remember why i became a stem student in the first place, because its i love the craft and genuinely have fu while doing it. sometimes materials can be a little spicy in the lab, but even then im alright with it, the fact that we can sit there and put to things together in a cup to make something new is what makes me happy. seeing the total mass stay the same, checking how effective the reaction was and what the percentage yield is. With all the chaos in constant momentum, it makes it feel like we at least know a little bit of what is going on around us.

People who have problem sleeping can actually use very mild, very mild CHCL3 and have sleep as much as they want i know its risky but if stupid kidnappers can use it effectively then why not regular smart people as well who actually can smell some just before going to bed and when they wake up dont be stupid have another go and fall asleep and safe and sound environment.

Not really, think about it. Almost EVERYONE has heard of this stuff and has seen it into everything from spy novels, to rape cases, to video games, to legends. However, there is almost never a lot said about it or a lot of detail of how its made, where it comes from, why its a thing ect. It would be weird if people DIDN'T come here out of pure curiosity. Sure there is likely a few bad actors who see this but i would bet 99.99% of the rest are just curious about a substance they have heard of from childhood but likely know little if anything about.
