HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE CORN TORTILLAS: Easy Recipe Using Maseca Corn Masa Flour/Tortillas de Maiz

If you want to learn How to Make Homemade Corn Tortillas, this video will show you step by step instructions. It uses Maseca brand instant corn masa flour. Read on for the easy recipe.
Corn Tortillas/Tortillas de Maiz
2 cups Maseca Instant Corn Masa Flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups hot water
In medium size mixing bowl, combine corn flour and salt. Add in hot water a little at a time, and knead until you have a soft, pliable dough. (You may not need all the water.) Form into a flat ball, cover with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel, and let dough rest for a minimum of 30 minutes.
When you're ready to make your tortillas, form masa into individual dough balls about 1 1/2" to 2" in diameter. Heat comal or skillet to medium heat. Then take two pieces of plastic (about equal size to your tortilla press) and place one piece on the bottom and the other on the top. Then, one at a time, put a dough ball in the middle of both pieces of plastic, and press down with tortilla press to form a corn tortilla. Carefully, remove from plastic, transfer to heated comal. Cook approximately 15 seconds on first side and flip over using spatula. Let cook approximately 1 minute on second side and flip over one more time. This time, push down on tortilla and it should form an air pocket in the middle. Let cook approximately 15 seconds, and your tortilla should be done. Remove from comal and place in covered dish lined with a kitchen towel. Cover well and continue on with making the other tortillas.

I’m Mexican and have been doing tortillas for years, you don’t need to have the masa rest, you don’t need to put salt ( unless your making Gorditas) and you don’t need a spachula to turn them, if you make balls before time they will dry, keep some water avail to add to tortillas before you put on presser because they should not be hard or thick when you cook them.

Thank you for or making corn tortillas. When I was growing up in Mexico that was what we ate, never flour tortillas. Never heard of flour tortillas till I was 18.

In Mexico they cut a big square out of a grocery bag for the tortilla press. But we started using thicker plastic. I like that you're using a spatula, I always do. I don't have tortilla fingers.

I remember as a kid my dad would make these for us we would get so excited waiting for them to come off the Comal! Then we would spread hot butter on them and maybe a little salt and devour them down while they were still hot much to my mother's dismay saying we were going to get stomach aches! This brought back a really good memory of my dad he loved to make them, thanks...

Awe. That is a sweet memory. Love that your Dad made corn tortillas. My mom rarely made corn tortillas because she was too busy making flour tortillas daily. But I remember, we weren't allowed to eat any, until she had at least four made. Why four? I have no idea. But you can bet, we were counting and had the butter ready. There's nothing like freshly made, hot tortillas.

I really did appreciate your advice on using plastic on both sides of the massa. I did try it and it came out beautifully. The rolling was not bad, it just took time and patience. This recipe was so simple and easy and of course having all the instructions really made a world of difference.🙂 I have ordered one of those tortilla presses to make it easier the next time round. I think I will be making this quite often. Now just need some filling recipes to go with it. Thank you so very much once again.🙂

I'm so happy to hear you had success with this recipe, even without a tortilla press. The plastic really does make a huge difference. And once you have a tortilla press, it will be even easier. Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment.

Thank you for giving the recipe along with the instructions so that we did not have to go to another link to find it. This is always appreciated. You made it look so easy that I am going to try it and pray that mine comes out as good as yours does even though I do not have a press and will have to roll it out.

Let me know how it turns out for you. Btw, if you have trouble rolling, I’ve seen people use books when they don’t have a tortilla press. So long as you have plastic on both sides of your masa, you can use anything with weight to press it down.

Me too. It's just me. I'd like to make a big batch and freeze them. Is there a trick to freezing homemade tortillas? The store-bought tortillas freeze well, but if I take the whole package out and they thaw, they get ratty looking and maybe soggy. Is there a trick to sealing them very well to store them in freezer?

I got mine years ago at Food City. Not sure if there’s one where you live, but any store that caters to the Mexican market will have them. They’re typically about $15. You could also search for a tortilla press on Amazon.

I subscribed. For the producers/editors. Free professional review on production of video. Nothing but suggestions. Take nothing personally. Nice quality cameras and okay compositions. Side quarter profile angle is a little too close to center and wide. Try getting a little more profile on this angle. But great lighting. Slow zoom in, good. But don't need to do that on every shot. But good that the editor is mixing it up. Good personality and humor of host. Likeable. Nice gimbal shot. No slo-mo please. ha ha. We've all seen that before and uff. Host has a great smile and personality, so don't be afraid to get closer with the shots to help bring this out. Doh, already two ads before we hit the 4 minute mark. Boo. Very nice camera work on the tortilla press. Thank you for keeping the edit past the clean fingernails reveal. What is the comal? What is that? She is referring to the pan at the stove. Perhaps you might add text on screen for unfamiliar viewers. Nice breather from the narrative with just music and visuals. Okay obviously this is not your first rodeo, but don't be afraid to push in on the second profile camera shot, so it's not so much of a wide shot to wide shot comp change. Looks to close to a match cut. When you cut to the second angle on the right, cut to a MS or MCU. Audio is great. Mix is great. I'm surprised she doesn't have her own show somewhere. End of review. Again, I'm not a know it all. I just encourage creators to be all they can be. ;-)
