How to Make Giant Bubbles w/Guar Gum

Guar Gum can be purchased here (this is an affiliate link): ebay.to/1IStyHZ
I decided for this video I would experiment with a Guar Gum based Giant Bubble recipe after many requests over the last year. It seems to work very well! On par at least with the J-Lube based recipe that I used in this video: • How to Make Giant Bubbles That is also the video to watch if you would like to learn how to make the giant bubble nets.
The best dish soap for bubbles is up for debate, but generally Dawn Platinum Power Clean is seen as one of the best. I also like Dawn's hypoalergenic dish soap which seems to work nearly as well and can be easier to find in stores. Anything labeled as a concentrate of '2x' is typically not very good.
Giant bubbles will work best in high humidity and in cool air, so mornings and late afternoons will give the best results. The middle of the night can also give great results, and the colors created in the bubbles by artificial lights are quite interesting as can be seen in this video: • Giant Soap Bubbles at ...

    I’m in San Diego using your recipe with Seventh Generation dish soap, j-lube & baking power though I increased the baking powder another tablespoon to 4. On the beach when the winds were about 3-5 mph, the bubbles went often about 1/2 to 3/4 mile before bursting!!! Very impressive! I’m trying to determine the perfect amount of wind… seems anything above 8kts is too much!

    NightHawkInLight Your reasoning for the baking powder doesn't make sense to me though. Baking soda is alkaline and baking powder is a combination of baking soda and some dry acid (usually cream of tartar). If you were trying to counteract the alkalinity of the dish detergent shouldn't you be adding just a straight acid like vinegar or cream of tartar?

  • @Nighthawkinlight

    @Nighthawkinlight

    Nick Horvath Baking powder has an excess of acid even though it also does contain baking soda. Cream of tartar may work also.

  • @edwardspiegel

    NightHawkInLight this article might be of interest: soapbubble.wikia.com/wiki/PH_Adjusters_and_Water_Conditioners baking soda will make a difference but does not provide as much of a benefit as baking powder (for the reasons that NightHawkInLight mentioned). Citric acid and tartaric acid will also work BUT you need to be extra careful not to add too much. If the pH falls below about 7.0 with Dawn-like detergents, the bubble juice does not work well. A pH of about 7.4-7.6 is the target though there is some wiggle room. baking powder has the benefit of being virtually impossible to over-use -- whereas with citric acid the difference between great bubble juice and juice that doesn't work is a small one.

  • @sebbes333
    @sebbes3334 жыл бұрын

    *@NightHawkInLight* Maybe you can add some kind of heating just in front of the bubble-ropes, so the air in the bubbles are slightly hotter & makes them rise up, instead of popping on a grass straw. Maybe like a thin copper coil that's short-circuit to a battery? ( *But first* research any explosion risks by short-circuiting the battery type you will be using ).

    So what's your opinion? Do you like the J-Lube recipe or the Guar Gum better? Videos alone can't really tell us as we don't know what the humidity was between the two. Since I'm writing you, thank you so much for your first tutorial, since watching it I've been obsessed. I've been doing my own Giant Bubbling since August of this year and the meditative experience and the fun has enriched my life and brought a lot of joy to many I've surprised in my community's parks.

    I really don't know. I've had success and failures with each. Most say the guar gum works better for beginners but I'm not so sure.

    Any tips for doing this in a hot, dry climate? I'd love to do this at the summer camp in the CA Sierra mountains that I volunteer at, but I get the feeling the low humidity will make it tough.

    Ryan Lemburg Smaller bubbles will stand a better chance so make the loops smaller than mine. Middle of the night or early morning will also be the highest humidity.

    Great video! But I imagine if I did this the bubbles wouldn't last long before my dog popped them. :)

    +GoRepairs I taught my dog to play frisbee by first popping bubbles. It can't hurt him
