How To Make Dog Stairs | DIY Woodworking

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I'm going to be making a custom set of dog stairs out of 5/4 poplar. These may be a bit overbuilt for the size of the dog that will be using them, and I probably could of used cheaper materials, but I wanted these to last for years and years. I'm really happy with the way that these turned out!

Nice job. This is what I was looking for as my little dog has gotten a little age and has slowed. He now needs help getting up onto his favorite chair.

Interesting that you mixed up the grain direction - horizontal for treads and risers, and vertical for the stringers. I'm going to be making some stairs with some pre-finished cabinet birch plywood, but having the stringers as a solid piece, cutting with the table saw and finishing the cuts with the jig saw. I like working with poplar too - cuts very nicely.

I made mine with plywood. Stringers were all one piece. But then I sprayed some adhesive added some padding and Then got some scrap fabric and upholstered getting two handles on the side. I probably could’ve used some nonskid tread tape and I may do that on the next one. Love that you used biscuits I might consider that at some point since I’m new at woodworking

Whew, good thing I had my table saw, miter saw, biscuit joiner, router, sander, keg jig, drill... I'd hate to have to build this with limited tools like probably the vast majority of youtube viewers have. So happy the video applies to me. That was a close call!

This video isn’t a “build a project with minimal tools” type video. Everyone starts with no tools and builds them up over the years based on what tool they need for the project. Do you have to use a biscuit joiner, no, but I did because it’s another way to join boards. To do any woodworking project you will need some tools to straighten, join, sand, and finish.

I designed the size of the steps based on the bed and dog that I was building it for you. I have plans for sale on my website that you can scale up and down depending on your needs.

I will be building steps for my big dogs as well, I’m just going to make it a bit taller with wider steps, you can use this as a base and go from there.
