I have heard this as well! The hole saw was so cheap on Amazon and the setup was so simple, we never tried any other method.

Love the angle idea to the frame sides and the 1" overhang! I have made a few using 2x4 frames and just started my first attempt at 1x4 frames. What angle did you cut the front of the side frames?

The angled fronts were a 10 degree I wanna say my friend. It can be any angle really. Just ensure all 4 side boards are cut to the same angle.

Okay... I have never played. We grew up playing lawn darts, which were deemed to dangerous for today's families LOL! Mauka is just around the corner so this old man will volunteer to test out your awesome looking boards and make you look bad at the same time. LOL!!

Love this build. I’ve seen this very video about 100 times. Very instructional! Props 👊🏼 to you sir. I have one question, what is the square clamps you are using when assembling the frames, think they are orange and dark grey. To make my leg cuts, I turn my boards upside down (the 3/4” birch is facing the floor) and make a 12” mark from the face of the board to the leg and then chalk it and it’s gives it a perfect line to cut at!

Interesting. I’ve never tried that. I tried so many ways and always came up short. This was the best way I found to get them right the first time everytime.

Sammy the Safety Chicken . . . I think he would question why, just seconds after mentioning safety in the beginning, you are shown using the miter gauge with a narrow piece running directly against the fence at the same time. That risks a dangerous bind. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's a lesson that was taught to me a long time ago. Better to have a stop block clamped against the end of the fence to register your cut length, then when you push forward to cut, the end of the board is actually free of the fence.

We go with #2 pine from Lowes. We bring it home and let it sit in the garage for a few days under weights. This allows the boards to dry and climatize to prevent warping.

It is the same height as if you were to use 2x4’s. It’s based on if you you use 1/2” or 3/4” tops my friend.

Very clear instructions! Quick question, how do you remove the fluff that builds up on the hooks of your orbital sander? I’ve been using a wire brush, but didn’t know if there’s a more effective method.

Either one works. I have used both, but I do prefer the look of the 1x3.

We split the width of the leg. Measure the same distance from the top of the leg. This gives us out drill location. Add in a 1” spacer between the leg and the top of the board. Clamp it. Then back drill using the mark you just made on the legs. Make sense?

I like the 1x3’s. They are a little lighter and just as strong.

Curious, I see the grain running horizontal. I’m a newbie but I thought you should go with the grain on the long parts. Any advice is appreciated.

For strength you do. But for something like this, it doesn’t really matter either way.

On this set it was a 15 degree. It could be adjusted based on how far in you want your front frame board. Just cut the angle from the front frame board to the end of the side frame board.

I'm not playing cornhole professionally...lol, but I wonder if the roundover on the hole would be illegal in competition? I have to think it would but just for fun with the family and friends it does look nicer w/ the roundover. I see many using 2x4's for the frame too but I like the look of the 1x4's better and as you mentioned it would make it lighter, offset some by the 3/4" top though. Looks great!!

The ply we buy is a finished surface. So we sand anything that might have been became rough during the process. And it also helps with the stain as well.

This is always the tricky part. For us…On the square end of the leg, mark a point 1 3/4 inches from the end and 1 3/4 inches from the side and drill hole. Then put the leg in place on the board. Place a piece of cardboard between the bottom of the board and the leg. Leave a 1/2-inch gap between the end of the leg and the end board of the base and back drill thru leg and thru the side.

These are actually cut down to 1x3’s for this set. But to keep it simple, we built the cut list to 1x4’s 😁

I always clamp the legs in place before I drill to ensure they are in the correct location. I put a 2x4 between the leg and the top of the board for spacing.

I get that the 20.5" plus 3/4" plus 3/4" would be 22"...and with 24" wide tops...that would be a 1" overhang on the sides. But if the tops are 48" long...and you have the long sides cut at 42"....wouldn't that leave a 3" overhang on the two ends?

How did you get an 1"overhang when you cut your length boards to 47".. That would give you A1/2 inch top and bottom.. Your sides at 20.5 would give you an inch overhang..or did you cut it to 46" and mistyped it

Hi, I enjoyed your video and have become a new follower, yeah :-) Thank you for posting the video. I’m attempting to build my first Cornhole game set. I have already purchased the ¾” birch plywood and 1 x 4’s. I have been procrastinating because I don’t want to mess it up, however viewing your video and the way you have broken it down I feel a bit more confident. A couple questions though: I didn’t see you gluing anything together, just using the Kreg Jig, do you feel that gluing is not necessary? I was planning on gluing the 1x4’s to the top as well as using a Kreg jig. Also, how do you finish the top (stain and polyurethane) so it’s nice and smooth. Thank you in advance, Cathy

Board builders are moving away from glue - it isn't necessary, dried glue gets in the way, and if there's ever a problem with the board, it's nice to have the option to separate the frame from the top. There are some great Facebook groups for this, like Cornhole Collective or the Cornhole Board Maker's group. Stain is good, or acrylic paint with baby wipes. Semi-gloss Polycrylic is a popular finish.

The glue is a personal decision. But with the kreg screws it snugs up super tight. I always stain the top with a waterbased stain and the. Use a waterbased polycrylic. They work well together and super easy clean up!

In the video you call the sides and ends as 1x4, but the cut list says 1x3’s. I bought 1x3’s, which one is correct and will 1x3’s still work?

It really all is personnel preference and how much they will be used. These were pretty solid with the screw design though.

Some of our customers request certain things. These were built for backyard play on grass. So the grass eliminated any bounce.

I always assemble and then make those cuts last. With wood from the box stores, nothing is ever precise. This way it ensures a perfect fit.

Random thoughts: 1. You clearly used 1x4 for the frames, but your cut list says 1x3. 2. No cross pieces in the center of the frame... are you not worried about "bounce"? 3. Consider adding a small block of wood for the legs to rest against when open. It'll relieve the stress those angled legs put on the frame, preventing damage long-term. 4. Suggested alternative to Baltic Birch? Most of us DIYers can't justify spending $200+ these days for a single sheet of plywood. ugh. :)

Hey Kevin, apologies for the delayed reply. 1. Both 1x4 and 1x3 will work well. It’s personal preference at that point. 2. We have built them both ways. Again it’s personal preference. Ive used both and I never really noticed a big difference. 3. This is a great idea! Thanks for the input. 4. Really any plywood will work. 3/4 won’t need any center supports. If you go with 1/2, ( a lot of people do to save on weight if they use them on the go) you might want center supports for long term use.

The sides have a 1” overhang at the top of the board, but it has an angle cut at the bottom. There is technically no 1” overhang on the sides where they connect to the bottom of the board.

It really is person preference based on design. Most boards have a 1” overhang on all 4 sides. In this case, your sides would be 2” shorter than your tops.
