I missed live stream was helping my daughter with some homework. But great video. I miss when as little girl my grandmother make candles and almost same as you, she would make wicks same way^^

Thank you, my son and I made these today! Fresh tallow from our goats and beeswax, flannel and jars. Everything we had on hand and they work perfectly

Flannel!?! I have plenty of scraps. Used it as the wic correct? How does it burn? Just rendered deer tallow plan to make candles but curious as to how the fabric wic burns after a while.

You mention you have a blend of oils you use for mosquito repellant. Would you be able to either make video explaining what blend you have had success with, or perhaps fill us in in the comments? Thanks!

Hi Steve! Yes I will cover mosquitoes and black flies, probably later this spring. For the candles, I mainly use lemon-eucalyptus oil (also in soap). It does help wards off mosquitoes. I will also use the same oil straight on my clothing or hair. I find it reduce the swarm around you. Dr. Watkins is still my main protective layer, but it doesn't reduce the swarm, its just prevent the bites. So I find that combination of essential oil and Dr. Watkins to work really well. I don't know where you are, but up here in the Laurentian region, during spring, Mosquitoes and Gnats will drive you crazy, and I mean bat-shit-crazy. I'll usually have a net over my head, dr-watkins, and a thermacell. :) The candles is for camp.

Great video…how long do you reckon a mason jar of tallow/bees wax that size would burn for?

Good question, but hard to say, I brought this one with me on many camping trip, its still not done yet, I'm maybe halfway. Its hours and hours and hours.

You're welcome! The wax addition It's just to prevent it from melting during hot summer day. Deer tallow is pretty hard at room temp, maybe not an absolute need, but if you carry your stuff like me, in a car, or a trailer, the last thing I want is melted tallow everywhere. :) cheers! thanks and your and yours too!

So, do you use a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio? My tallow is a bit soft at room temp

You can start low at 1:4 , and see how it hardens, if its still too soft, you can melt it again and add beeswax until you reach the proper hardness. The beauty of this is you can always melt it back and adjust the recipe. As long as you don't burn it. I don't remember exactly how much I used, but from the video it look like 1:4.

@@Spongebob007 Ok. I used Deer tallow, which is much harder than beef tallow, So in your case 1:3 could be the minimum.

It's tallow, Deer Tallow, but you can use any tallow :) Cheers!

This I LOVE, cause I can't get enough of candles. But sadly I can't do this. Maybe future content would u concider Bears & other wildlife. Thank you.

Sorry I don't understand the question. You meant bear fat for candles? It's too runny and delicious 😋 I prefer to cook and eat with it.
