How to make Candles from animal fat

Ойын-сауық

Meat candles are one of my favorite Winter Pleasures. Whether you are into self reliance or just enjoy interesting craft projects making Meat aka Tallow candles is easy and fun. My kids love making these old school candles with me.

    Tallow has about 15,000 to 18,000 btu's per pound and weighs about 7.9 pounds per gallon. So a 1 quart candle would have 30,000 to 35,000 btu's of energy. For reference, a 70,000 btu furnace would heat an average 3 bedroom home. The bit of heat you're feeling is real, not in your mind.

    I love you for the Math! So I added an old school oil lamp to my setup, it burns anything from vegetable oil to Bacon fat, I would imagine the btu rating would be very similiar. I’m thinking about doing a video on that here soon, I’ll probably use your info in it! Thanks

    @@reliablyrandomoutdoors Be careful.. On top of the concern list is that candles tend to burn homes down when they detect someone making a mistake, or a dog, or a child doing something... 2nd after that, while tallow candles do technically burn clean, it is still combustion and it is still emitting fine particulate matter. Those particulates aren't toxic like paraffin candles, but you're still breathing them. Lots of candles + little ventilation = bad news. In modern day homes that are well insulated and sealed up tight, candles are kind of a bad idea unless its an emergency.

    @@rgbcolor6450 agreed most modern homes are unlivable on a hot day without power... and yes candles just like grapes can cause a lot of accidents if not handled properly. most anything being burned vent free without supplemental oxygen or is putting a fair amount of Newtons leftovers in the air LOL. I recommend keeping your candles in thick glass jars. that leaves flashover and spill as the only concern wich are pretty easily managed with some basic candle management skills LOL. This is great. Thanks for the demo! Someone mentioned about odours and I found another YT vid about purifying the fat to remove those odours. They say start with the fat from around the animal's kidneys, chop it up, then food-process it down to lumps and low and slow cook it with 3 tablespoons of salt and 750ml of water (guessing about 4 hrs till most of the fat lumps become liquid)- some lumps will not change. Let the stuff cool in a bowl that flexes then pop out the fat upside down. You get the 'impurities' at the bottom. scrap em off. Chop up your somewhat clean fat and return to heat along with same 3tblspoons salt and 750ml water and slow cook for about an hour. Chuck it in the bowl again, cool off, look underneath, impurities much smaller and you are left with pure white fat for now a wide range of uses! Mostly suited for lovely white candles and as an ingredient in home made moisturizer.

    Thanks, for me there is a delicate balance between practical and perfection. If I make something like these candles such an overcomplicated process in persuit of perfection it is longer is practical. So there is a balance there. I don't find the smell to be noticeable but some say they do ( my wife) masking with a bit of lavender usually solves the problem for her. Rendering can be super simple or incredibly complicated. since I genuinely have objectives of living Grid Free, the simple methods are what i tend to lean toward because it keeps an entire self sufficient household manageable. thanks for the input, just curious have you made or are you planning to make some candles?

    Not if the wick is trimmed properly, so each time it is burned you should trim off the burned charcoal part of the wick, also make sure the wick is sized properly, a wick that is too large will also smoke, and could be a little dangerous, so error on the side of a smaller wick till ya get comfortable with it

    RRO, I wanted to try to teach this process in a Boy Scouting event. I watched your video thru and headed to Menards. I saw the Mastercraft signage 52 seconds into the video to purchase the cord for wicks. At time stamp 2:35 you go over the braided polyester cotton combo and the twisted cotton option. I'm confused, I recall you saying to get 3/16th inch cotton twisted (2:19 min), but in 52 seconds mark you have 1/8th inch cotton twisted cord in hand before you play catch with the cutest kids ever. I went to Menards this evening to pick up the wicking and bought the wrong cotton/poly blend because it was the only 3/16th option. Can you confirm that the twisted cotton is in fact 1/8th inch vs 3/16ths inch? I also watched another video on rendering lard from animal fat and commenter mentioned asking your local butcher for fat scraps to render into lard/grease. I've discovered that bacon grease burns much cleaner then hamburger grease with far less popping and crackling as I'm assuming its a water content issue in the fat. Have you tried using bacon grease vs the hamburger grease? Let me know if there is mistake in the cotton wick diameter please and 1/8 inch is the way to go. Thanks Chris 🙂

    So yes the scene where we select the chord at Menards we were grabbing the wrong one. Now im not sure why but I can’t find the twisted cotton rope in that size anywhere now. Any size will work as long as it is pure cotton and does not have a synthetic blended in. If it’s too small the wick may burn up however. So Size does make a difference for the quality of the burn however. So here is what I did (more recently than the video). I bought 3ft of thick cotton twisted rope probably 1” rope from tractor supply. And now I just pull it apart a bit and cut a chunk off of it that meets the needs of the candle. The other think I started doing was twisting it around a toothpick to hold the wick up a little better. Btw what area are you in? One of my kids is in scouts just checking if we are in the same group? Bacon grease does burn great but it is liquid at a much lower temperature so it does not hold a wick on its own. It needs to be burned in something that can hold the wick like an old genie lamp. Beef fat is probably the best for your project because the fat content of cattle is so incredibly high due to selective breeding. Thanks for doing what ya do w the scouts. Glad to arrange a call to discuss in further detail if you like

    @@reliablyrandomoutdoors The scouting group is related to my brother's kids in the WI area. I live just over the state line in IL. I'm an Eagle scout from 35 years ago, so its more of spend time with my nephew and niece (now days) experience for me. I gathered you were in IN somewhere but I can't recall how I recall that now. LOL. As for bacon vs beef, I agree that beef is a thinker fat and holds together better at room temps. I found that if you poor tall narrow jars with the bacon grease, the deep solid fat holds up the wick for most part. That said, once you've burned down to maybe a 1/4 of the jar left, you will have stand up wick issues if its burns for hours on end. Its simple enough to just melt left overs back into another jar and build a taller one again. On a side note, I have been playing around with adding beef grease with liquid/melted candle wax to see how the two perform together. Its too early to review results, but I can say the one downside is the wicks get coated with carbon and get inflexible and burn poorly when burning fat vs wax alone. Also, depending on how the 1st candle making event goes over, I might try a bacon/beef combo. (Now I'm craving a burger). Maybe a 50/50 ratio of mixed room temp grease might burn cleaner (less cracking and spitting) and still have the rigidity to hold a wick up. I like the idea of unwinding a 1" cotton rope and using the strands as wicking. That might be a good angle on finding a ~1/4" cotton wick solution. Thanks Chris PS: A chord is a candle wick you pull tightly and pluck for beautiful music and ... soft lighting. LOL 😜

    When we use candles for heat it's the heat technically coming at the expense of oxygen inside the house? To replenish the oxygen you have to crack a window which re-coolls the house and exposes it to the outside. So I never understood why flames are used to heat a home.

  • @reliablyrandomoutdoors

    @reliablyrandomoutdoors

    4 күн бұрын

    Well if it wasn’t a net gain fireplaces would not work to heat homes. They literally suck air out of the chimney non stop but still have enough residual thermal energy left in the house to heat the whole thing. I think your math is mossing a couple of variables. Btw your body is creating heat in a very similiar process while you use oxygen and fuel to create energy and much of it comes off the human body as heat.
