Wow, 25 gallons of tallow from one steer?? I'm familiar with leaf lard but didn't realize that suet is the beef equivalent. Interesting! When making lard jar candles, I also use beeswax to firm up the lard to keep the wick from flopping over. Lard is a lot softer so you use more beeswax, one part beeswax to 4 parts lard. You have to install wick exactly centered and waxed to bottom enuf or glued to bottom or wick lifts and decreases burning time

My daughter likes to eat 85/15 hamburgers many nights a week. So I’ve been saving and purifying the beef tallow to make body lotion and candles. It’s not the highest quality tallow, as found around the visceral organs. But for some reason it’s quality is not bad. It sets up as solid as lip balm. When you purify it using a bit of water, and hamburger debris settles down into the water, and the tallow floats and hardens on top. I really appreciate this high quality video. You’re well-spoken and remind me a bit of the talented Mennonite women who live around us. I like the biblical/Hebrew history lesson and the quote at the end. These candles will be nice to put away for emergencies or just to enjoy one evening for pleasure.

That's great! Because I put beeswax into my candles, they firm up quite nicely (even firmer than some of the salves I make) so for the most part I'm not worried about them melting.

Hi Sydney, thanks! Yes, you'd render the goat tallow the same way you would beef. Chop up the fat and cook slowly until all the fat has come out.

Thanks Randy. Vanilla would smell very good! I know people will often add essential oils, but you have add so much and they seem to evaporate too quickly... a bit expensive, especially if it doesn't smell bad in the first place. But vanilla would probably be cheaper.

Thanks! We haven't used lard, but I'm sure it would work fine. Not sure how it would smell... the smell largely depends on how the lard/tallow was rendered. You could add essential oils, although it would take quite a bit.

It's tricky getting the right firmness, and that depends on if you're using the hard suet or not. Keep trying!

Could a factor be getting the initial water content out of the fat? I recently watched a video on preparing tallow to can/preserve it and part of their technique in knowing it was ready was having a lid on the pan and check it until there was no more condensation forming inside the lid to let then know it was ready for canning. This would probably be a good idea when rendering for use in candles

Thanks for this video. I am new to making tallow candles. My tallow is soft at room temp. I'm making candles in jars. I'm using beeswax like you say. My candles turn out great but if you touch them they're not real hard. My question is will my candles go rancid/bad if the texture isn't real hard? I'm thinking long term storage, how long do these keep? My jars have lids would lids help for long term storage?

That's great! Mine aren't very hard either, but the softness of the tallow will affect that. If you want your candles firmer just add some extra beeswax. I wouldn't think the firmness of the candles would affect their storage life, as tallow is quite shelf stable and will last a long time in cold storage. If you're looking to store your candles long tern, I'd suggest putting them somewhere cool (around 5C), and yes, with lids on. Yes, you can, but I haven't. I'd imagine you would need to add quite a bit of essential oils to get a good aroma.

No, not yet. But if I was, I would want to make sure I use suet tallow (the hard, waxy fat found around the organs of the animal) and mix in some beeswax. Although, when it comes to tapers, nothing beats beeswax!

Most jars, votives and mugs work well. Make sure they have thick enough glass, and generally not too much taller than they are wide.

I want to make the wicks like you showed with the bees wax. But I'm worried about putting them down on something since beeswax doesn't come off of stuff. And thinking they'll stick to paper. So I'm wondering, what should I put them down on while the beeswax dries?

I just hang onto them until they're cooled down enough to gently lay them down. It doesn't take long, a minute or two.

Since suet is the hardest tallow, wouldn't reg fat or lard be more suitable for adding to beeswax, which is very hard?

Not sure I understand your question... However, even the hardest suet tallow is softer than beeswax and can be too soft for making a firm enough candle. When making tallow candles with suet it works best to add some beeswax.

Why you mixed the tallow with beeswax? Tallow also the good fixator for wick in the jar.

Depending on where you got the tallow from on the body of the animal it can be quite soft and the beeswax helps firm it up a bit more.

It depends on Howard the fat is. If the fat alone is quite firm at room temperature you probably would not need the beeswax.

Smells and smoky NO - depends on how one renders the tallow. Quality determines output. Causes headache? Not for me who is very sensitive so no beeswax or paraffin wax (pollen and paraffin allergy). Not a fan of soy wax either and most certainly no fragrances. Each to his/her own.
