My recipe is old, handed down from my grandmother (born GA), circa early 1900's, and does not use syrup...only dark brown sugar. I found an old cookbook by the singer/TV star Dinah Shore (born KY) and she had a similar family recipe in her book...just brown sugar, no syrup...which makes me wonder if the original pie ever used syrup?
