35 years ago, as a professional make-up artist, I learned about making pancake make-up. Take a look at the ingredients that Westmore used to make the first pancake make-up. They needed something that would not melt under the hot studio lights. In checking his formula, it amazed me that he just took a paint formula and made it into the make-up of the Golden Hollywood era. His product created the velvet complexions on screen. So, chalk paint also does that, cause it is the same ingredients. So, the comment of "painting your face" actually fit what he was doing. He used a solid pigment that he dispersed into a liquid medium and added his talc, too. He would apply the foundation to the starlet, let it dry, and buff it. The buffing took away anything that would appear scratchy on film. Their complexions had to be perfectly smooth, like when gesso is put on a canvas. I think you can see where I am going here. So, sanding your chalk paint is the same as when Westmore would "buff" his clients foundation. It was activated with water and would dry on the actresses, not like a mud mask, but they felt it's tightening power. So many of the actresses would swipe the foundation from him for their own use. It led him to start producing it in larger quantities and the rest is history. I will use the calcium carbonate to make my paint. I have some awfully beautiful mineral pigments that I want to turn into paint. I'll "buff" with the lightest sandpaper, mimicking what Westmore did to complexions and make my paint so smooth. This is fun. Thank you for posting your experiments.

Thanks for the info - great demo. I would add one thing - the safety of talc is still contested, so be sure and wear a mask when mixing so no powder is inhaled, and make sure you don't get in talc on broken skin. That should keep you safe!

@@jenlafferty6781 Unfortunately, 3 months after I uploaded this vid, Johnson and Johnson discontinued talc baby powder in the USA and Canada, and it seems everyone and every generic brand is copying. You can try searching for pure talc in bulk ,but the vid seems to have made the prices jump up. I am in the process of making another vid with another product for the USA and Canada. This vid will remain up for the rest of the globe who can still benefit and thank me all the time. Sorry about that. I am frustrated too!

I’ve used baking soda mixed with acrylic craft paint on glass and it looks like ceramic. My 25 year old daughter saw a piece and thought it was truly ceramic.

denise bendickson hi Denise. I would check out “Humblebee and Me” you tube channel. She has a lot of great cosmetic and skin care diy’s on her channel and has helped me a lot with my formulations. You can also check out TKB Trading, which is where I purchase a lot of my ingredients for my mineral makeup. It’s so much cheaper to make your own! Have fun making!

This is great - I've tried this with artists acrylics and house paint, and they both stick really well to glass and to different types of plastic. The best thing about it is that I don't need to varnish or wax it, as the paints themselves do the sealing. I also sometimes add a little plaster of Paris to get texture - it gives a slightly lumpy ceramic look. Thank you so much - I've transformed a lot of things that I would otherwise have thrown out.

Thank you for demonstrating the differences, you cosmetic background definitely gives you the right knowledge to improve on craft formulations! I think makeup is just another craft medium! Chalk might be gypsum which is also what some people add to make chalk paint. Talc sounds safer than plaster, more accessible than gypsum powder for us. (Cornstarch for body powder and babies).

@@debraclark9549 I usually use the 1:1 ratio but it depends on the thickness of the original paint too. I would suggest starting with small amounts and then adding more as you need it to get the right thickness. Hope that helps!

For those who can't find this ingredient at a dirt cheap price, check out my NEW video here for more awesome ideas! kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGp70JutotDHZdo.html There are no “exact” measurements for this recipe, which I mention in the video, because if you start with a thicker paint, you add less and vice versa. I give a suggested *starting point* for use with *acrylic* craft paint of 2 parts powder to 1 part paint. You can also add tiny amounts of water and it won’t hurt the opaqueness if your paint gets too thick. Even a little shake into ANY kind of paint will add more "veiling" power to that paint. Johnson and Johnson lawsuits relate to talc migrating up into the vagina. Obviously, that is not the application here for chalk paint. The issue of asbestos-containing talc stems from the mining of the two naturally occurring minerals, which often are found in close proximity on the earth’s surface. Unfortunately, companies were unaware in the 1960's- early 1970's and were mining from contaminated mines. *Today's talc is routinely tested for asbestos. Cosmetic talc is 96% pure, and medical talc 98% free of asbestos* J&J just as easily could have put a warning not to use it on your baby's private parts. They continue to sell it everywhere on the globe except the USA and Canada, only because they were sick and tired of lawsuits. Cornstarch is GMO, and will also migrate into the vagina and I am fairly certain there will be consequences from that. As a side note, *simple rice starch or arrowroot powder is best for your baby's bottom area!* To keep things in perspective, saw dust from wood is listed as a carcinogen and linked to cancer. I don't agree with J&J's cowardly removal of talc. They knew it didn't pose a danger when used correctly. The USA still allows it's use in tons of our facial powders! It was a stupid move and has fueled misinformation and hysteria. However, *don't go buy a bag of talc off online. It needs to be medical grade, which is what was in the baby powder!* Always wear a mask when doing anything with airborne particles. @@rondawatterson7872 I almost missed it too...but her suggested measurements weren't written out she spoke them. But she LIKES one part paint to one half part talc. Or u can do one part paint to one part talc but no more. In other words...if u have a cup of paint add a half cup talc and may add up to a cup but no more. Hope that helps.

Do you have a hard time finding baby powder talc? The $.99 Only Store and the Dollar Tree and pretty much every discount store sells it here. Do you live in the USA? Calcium carbonate is what they put in real chalk paint. It’s essentially Tums, the ant acid 🥰😘, but people want to buy things in the store when they’re there, for the most part. That’s why it’s quick easy and cheap chalk paint 😂 Thanks for watching!

What I researched and found to be the True ingredient in those expensive chalk paints Was Calcium Carbonate. I didn’t find mine cheap like you. I had to buy “Fluker’s Calcium For Captive Reptiles”. 2oz jar for about $7. “Chewy” online retail keeps sending me cards asking how my lizard is when I order pet supplies lol. I think it’s 2 tablespoons dissolved in water and mixed with a sample size tin of paint...that’s all ya get! I was thinking that must be why Annie Sloan charges $32 for a little can at my fav vintage shop. It is a smooth finish tho, I noticed heavy streaks with the talc (more water needed?).

Connie Jane yes, you can add more water to reduce steaks. Also keep in mind that my chalk paint recipe is a faux Chalk paint recipe meant as a nice substitute for those people who can’t afford the real brand-name chalk paint. It is perfect for fun crafts, however if you were doing furniture or kitchen cupboards I would recommend investing in high-quality real chalk paint. In saying that, many of the subscribers on this thread said they have done exactly this! Painted their furniture and their kitchen cupboards and they love the results using talc! 😯😜I find Waverly to be streaky as well. In general I just find chalk paint to be very streaky. You can spray a bit of water on the surface and brush. This will reduce the streaks with both my chalk paint recipe and the brand name chalk paint using calcium carbonate. 🥰❤️

Just wondering, if you were to rub calcium carbonate on your skin, is it leaving a white film behind or is it completely transparent? Baking soda for example makes paint feel like chalk paint, but doesn’t actually create a high coverage one coat chalk paint. Just wondering what calcium carbonate is like? If you scroll up this thread one of the commentators said she uses calcium carbonate plus a little bit of talc. She feels this creates the perfect chalk paint. I have not tried it.

Hi Michelle! Yes I made up a mason jar full and it’s still going. A little bit goes a long way! You can also add a little bit of water to it if you feel it’s too thick. That really makes it nice and smooth and easy to work with. I have one jar that is mixed with primer from Home Depot. Then I have another jar that’s mixed with apple barrel white acrylic paint. I use the one with primer when I want something to really stick hard. Things like glass. I just used the acrylic version on metal buckets and it worked brilliantly! I sealed it with a bit of watered down mod podge so that the mod podge wouldn’t be so thick that it would drag and smudge the paint. It makes the mod podge glide nice and easy. More gentle. Hope that helps💕❤️🥰

It works the same as crafting chalk paint, so I don't see why not! I've stenciled with it, but I haven't tried the specific brand you're talking about (just being honest). Logically though, it should perform the same. Thanks for watching! xox

Holly, I tried to read through as many comments as I could to find my answer before bothering you with it. Are you only mixing up your chalk paint with acrylic craft paints? Have you tried latex interior/exterior? I would assume it would work just the same?! TYFS! 💘💘💘

It works with any kind of paint. You can also add tiny amounts of water to thin it out. You can add less if you start with a thicker better coverage paint. Hope that helps! xxx

I did try it. Next time I will add a little more talc. It did cover better than the acrylic paint by itself.

I’ve used marble dust for years. Gesso has it. Talc works too. I make a texture paste with baby powder, works awesome!
