***USE CAUTION when doing this project. Making lip balm involves using the stove. We use a low temperature, so things don't look hot, but they can burn you! Wax and oil are flammable and should not be left unattended. This is a fun and easy project when everyone exercises kitchen safety.
***ALWAYS SUPERVISE CHILDREN when doing this project.
***WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS AND FLAVOR OILS make sure everything is "lip safe". Not all oils are made for lips and could be toxic or cause damage to your skin.

Ingredients:
1/4 oz Beeswax
1 1/2 Tbsp (or 4 1/2 tsp) Carrier Oil (Almond Oil or Coconut Oil)
3 drops Vitamin E Oil
3 drops LIP SAFE essential oil OR 7 drops LIP SAFE flavor oil
Most of these ingredients can be found at your local grocery store, natural store, or on Amazon. Here is where I get mine:
Lip Balm Tubes & Flavor Oils:

An artist friend of mine, Emma San Cartier @oddfauna drew the bee on the label, and my husband actually draws all of the flavor pictures. I put them all together in Photoshop to make the label. For children's classes I use labels that students can draw on 😊 The ones in the video are professionally printed from yourlabelsnow.com/ Before I made enough lip balm to do that (so when I was making small batches or experimenting with new flavors) I would print my own on my inkjet printer. Here are the ones I would buy: www.onlinelabels.com/products/ol1102?src=dlc-265 With the print at home ones, I find that the labels aren't as sticky and can rub off if you carry lip balm in your pocket like I do. I'd recommend using a shrink wrap sleeve over the label to keep the label looking nice, and before you apply the label, make sure that the tube is very clean - wipe up and drips so the oil doesn't keep the label from sticking. Hi! I love your video on making this simple lip balm. A question: Do you use the pipette for one batch and then toss it? Or can they be reused. I like to minimize my plastic waste whenever possible. Thanks, Susan
@SagerFamilyFarm

Thanks so much, and I completely agree about minimizing single use plastics. Unfortunately, pipettes are single use, but I usually make larger batches. An alternative might be to use a lip balm tin/pot with a larger opening, and then you might be able to pour the lip balm in from a measuring cup with a spout (less precise, but would minimize waste). I believe there are also suppliers that make cardboard lip balm tubes instead of plastic, I haven't tried them out, but I've been curious to try them. Good luck with your lip balm making!

Yes! Just make sure it is lip safe and either oil based or a mica powder. You can actually even add a bit of lipstick in to add some tint. Don't use water based food coloring, because it won't mix with the oils in the lip balm and will just sink to the bottom.
Hi great video! What's the shelf life for the balm?
@SagerFamilyFarm
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It should be the shelf life of the ingredient with the shortest shelf life - so in this case, the oil you use. I find that almond oil with vitamin e oil seems to last about 2 years. You can tell that's it's starting to go bad when it starts to smell dusty (that's the oil becoming rancid).
I just made this recipe and refilled some of my old chapstick tubes and jars, and this worked really well for me. The only thing I changed was I added 2 additional teaspoons of almond to make the balm a bit smoother. It’s really hard for me to find a formula that works well on my chapped lips but this combination works really well. I’m going to make my own from here on out :) Thanks for posting this tutorial.

Do you do anything special to process the wax to get it to food grade? Twice I filtered and settled my wax from brood comb and it's a nice deep yellow now. But since I saw how dark it was before processing I'm scared to trust it!
@SagerFamilyFarm
2 жыл бұрын
I suppose I always start with a food-grade wax and don't introduce anything that isn't food grade at any point. So for making lip balm, I would always start with wax cappings from harvesting honey - so basically something I would eat on its own. If you are melting down brood comb (which I wouldn't eat since it accumulates a lot of cocoons and debris) I would use that wax more for candles. I also filter using mann lake's honey filtering cloth (which is food grade), I know lots of DIYers use panty hose for filtering wax, and it works great, but it's not meant for food processing, so I don't use that for filtering my lip balm wax.

Unfortunately I haven't found a really good source for the best lip safe essential oils. It usually takes a little bit of googling, but I use "food grade" as a rule of thumb since it's going on your lips and small amounts will be ingested. I use lavender, spearmint, peppermint, lemongrass, and vanilla essential oils in my lip balm, but I'm sure there are more. As for carrier oils, I'm not sure every food grade oil would work, but many do. I've seen people use olive oil for lip balm, and it's in many lotions and soaps - my favorite is almond oil because it has a very nice texture, but I also use coconut oil.

Hi! I just had a quick question. I was reading that flavor oils need to be 1-3% of the lip balm formula. Is 7 drops 1-3% of this formula? Thank you!!
@SagerFamilyFarm
2 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's approximately 1.5%. Each tube holds about 95 drops (.15 oz by weight) of lip balm. The total recipe makes approximately 5 tubes of lip balm, for a total of 475 drops in the recipe. 7 drops of flavor oil would be approximately 1.5% of the total lip balm formula, so you could definitely go a little heavier on the flavor oil. 7 drops is a good starting place, but you could add up to 14 and still be within the 1-3% range 😊

Can you add glycerin or aloe to the lip balm or will the ingredients not mix well

I have never used glycerin or aloe in lip balm, but I believe you could. The recipe that I use is great for sensitive lips, I have heard mixed things about glycerin (some people love it in lip balm, some people hate it - this could have something to do with the specific recipe). I find that the oil you choose makes a difference in hotter temperatures. If you use coconut oil, the lip balm if softer when you keep it in your pocket or the glove box of a car. I prefer to use almond oil, that seems to keep the lip balm firm even when you keep it in your pocket. If you keep either recipe in your car in direct sun on a warm day, it will likely start to get very soft or start melting because of the high heat (just like remelting it on the stove).

Can I double the recipe and make 10 tubes or will that ruin them
@SagerFamilyFarm

You can definitely double it! I actually usually do a 10x recipe before I go to craft fairs and it turns out perfectly. For your first time, start with a small batch to make sure it is the texture you want it to be. You can scale back the oil to make it a more firm lip balm, and you can use different types of oil (I find that almond oil gives me the smooth texture I like, and coconut oil does feel more oily when used in the exact same amount).
How long we can use it?
@SagerFamilyFarm

About 2 years. The shelf life of the lip balm depends on the shelf life of the ingredients. Almond/Coconut Oil is typically the first thing to spoil, these oils typically have a shelf life of about 2 years. You'll be able to tell it's going bad by a dusty smell. Vitamin E oil is a natural preservative (and also a great moisturizer) and can help keep the lip balm fresher for longer.

Is it ok to use white beeswax pellets?
@SagerFamilyFarm
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if it were me, I would try to make sure it is naturally bleached (with light/sun exposure) rather than chemically bleached. The yellow beeswax is likely more natural (depending on where you get it). Once you mix the oils in with the yellow wax, it does lighten up to be a pale yellow. Larger beeswax producers can make pellets, and these melt much more quickly and are really easy to use - I use little bricks because that's what's easiest for me to make when I'm rendering the wax from my own beehives 😊

For the vitamin E oil, I usually squeeze drops out of the capsule, or you can slowly dribble it off of a spoon (it is too thick for a regular dropper). It's a little tricky to use percentages because some of the ingredients are measured by weight and some by volume. When I make this in bigger batches, I use a recipe like this: 170g beeswax 2.25 cup almond oil 3/4 teaspoon vitamin E oil 3.6 ml essential oil It's not in percentages, but it should at least help with the conversion from drops to a larger volume (in teaspoons or milliliters). That recipe makes about 144 tubes. Hope that helps!
Can i ask you what will happen if you put water in it?
@SagerFamilyFarm
3 жыл бұрын
The water will separate from the oil/wax solution. Even if you whisk it together, when you pour it into lip balm tubes, the water will sink down to the bottom and the oil/wax ingredients will float to the top. To mix oil and water requires the use of an emulsifier (I'm not familiar with that process since my recipes use all oil/wax based ingredients).
Can also put in the oven until melted
Approximately how many tubes do you get from one batch of your recipe?

This is an itty bitty batch that makes about 5 tubes of lip balm (depending on how full you fill the tubes and how precise your measurements are). Oh no! That's too bad. You can actually remelt it and add a little more oil to see if that helps. Just roll up the tube all the way and use a knife or spatula to cut the lip balm and put that back into your melting pot (there is a little plastic piece at the bottom that helps push the lip balm up, make sure that doesn't go back into the melting pot). You can roll the tube back down so you can refill it (the little plastic piece at the bottom might need a little push to start it going back down). Even though there is a little bit of the lip balm mixture that can't easily be removed from that bottom part of the tube, you can reuse most of the mixture and take notes on how much oil you end up adding to make it the right consistency for you. I hope that helps! Everyone's tastes are different, so hopefully this recipe serves as a starting place for you to experiment.
that is not a cosmetic grade vitamin e , those capsules are just supplements . this is just a misconception spread around the internet . also , vitamin e (the cosmetic grade ) or even the food supplement vitamin e are not preservatives , that is another false information. its an antioxidant which just delays the rancidity of the oils , it doesnt preserve it. you know those funky smell you get from old oils ?? vitamin e (mixed tocopherols ) just delays it . to actually preserve something , you need a broadspectrum preservative , but this applies to bath and body products containing water or water alternative , for example body cream or body lotion. lip balms or body butters dont require preservative as they completely made up of oils and waxes , because bacteria cannot grow in oil. DISCLAIMER: This is just a constructive criticism , no hate intended
