How to Make and Install a Cupola - Part 1: The Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show how I go about making a cupola for our friends' barn. I made the cupola in three sections so that I could manage to get it up on the roof without any help.
In the next video (Part 2), I show how I did all the assembly on the roof.
Here are some of the things that I used:
Audio Technica PRO 70 Lavalier microphone: amzn.to/2KbFU1V
Tacklife digital protractor: amzn.to/2HUBlIG
Tacklife wood moisture meter: amzn.to/2HpJHvb
INCRA miter gauge: amzn.to/2K8EG7M
Tacklife digital height gauge: amzn.to/2HYwh60
Freud SD508 Super Dado Set: amzn.to/2K9xKY0
Makita impact driver: amzn.to/2Fd02gv
Tacklife cordless drill: amzn.to/2K8C21Q
Hitachi brad nailer: amzn.to/2FbOpGI
Makita track saw: amzn.to/2HoKpob
Bosch jig saw: amzn.to/2HnBcR8
For determining the correct angles for cutting the compound angles on the table saw, I used this calculator: www.blocklayer.com/crown-mold...

Holy-Moly! There's a wealth of information in this one! I think I could take away bits of the project as individual lessons. It's a beautiful piece you've built for your friend!

Wow! Absolutely gorgeous! I really enjoyed watching the process of the build. So precise and done with such excellence! I saved these videos and before I watched them told my husband that I was excited to build a cupola for our building...then I watched it...my husband asked, “So this is what you’re going to build?” With that doubtful tone. Somehow I don’t think he has much confidence. Well, after watching, I am not sure about my confidence anymore. But I want to give it a try. Very inspirational and overwhelming at the same time. I have wanted a cupola for years so I am motivated.

I did make it! Actually, I made two. Your video was incredibly helpful. I have a 100 year old barn that had Two large cupolas that were falling apart. It took me one year to make two cupolas from scratch. The frame was treated wood, the plywood was marine grade, and the louvres and sidings are made of Royal PVC cellular wood. It should last 25 years without needing any maintenance. It is 52" wide and 95" tall. It weighed over 200lbs. I hired a professional to install it with a crane. Thank you so much. Your instructions were very clear. I will try to post a picture. Thanks again. Paul

It would be difficult as I have no formal carpentry training, but that sure would look beautiful on top of my shed. That fact alone makes me want to build it. Luckily it would be up on the roof where people wouldn't be able to see all the mistakes I made on it. I was originally thinking of only building a small decorative one but your video inspired me.

I sure hate to say anything negative about such an incredible build - but with treated lumber you pretty much have to use stainless screws - galvanized, even hot dipped galvanized, will corrode faster than a regular nail would rust.

Very nice project. Would you consider making it actually a functional vent or a "lookout" that you could stick your head into, that is, cutting a hole in the roof beneath the cupola? If you did so, what steps would you take to keep weather out of the building, and not degrade structural integrity of roof?

Great job! One comment though. Never caulk bare wood! The caulk needs the primer to adhere to the wood - the same way the paint needs the primer to adhere. Always Prime first Light sand the primer Then caulk Apply the finish top coat

Did you start with a measured design plan or just measure and build as you went? I want to try a similar cupola but need 48 inches wide based on my roof width. I’m concerned if I stay square on the vented sections, that the overall will be too high by the time I get a roof and weathervane on it. Any thoughts?

policev840 I thought about making an outfeed table for my last saw but held off until I bought this saw. I'm really glad I bought the outfeed rollers with the saw. They function really well and fold down easily when you want to out them out of the way. Compared to the time and materials to make an outfeed table, this was a really economical option for me. I would definitely buy them again.

I'm probably a little unorthodox because I typically start with a concept in mind, and then I just start building and figure it out as I go. I had plenty of time to think about it while the pressure treated lumber was drying in my garage (it went from 43% moisture to 6% in four months). That method probably wouldn't work if I was building a house, but for a small project like this, it worked well and it saved a lot of time that I would have spent trying to draw it up in SketchUp.

  • @Woodumakeit

    @Woodumakeit

    6 жыл бұрын

I bought that sprayer at Harbor Freight. I don't purchase many items there, but this particular sprayer has worked well for me for my relatively basic needs. Here's a link to the one that I have: www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-professional-hvlp-gravity-feed-air-spray-gun-68843.html The compressor I have is a Craftsman 12 gallon compressor that I bought several years ago before I owned an HVLP sprayer. If I had to do it over again, I would definitely buy a larger compressor because mine can't keep up with the demand of the sprayer. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Craftsman compressor, but I'd want to at least double its size to have enough CFM output.
