How to Make and Install a Cupola - Part 2: The Installation
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I show how I go about installing the cupola for our friends' barn. I made the cupola in three sections so that I could manage to get it up on the roof without any help.
I show how all the components go together, how I apply shingles onto a hip roof, and how I attach the weather vane.
You can watch Part 1: The Build by clicking here: • How to Make and Instal...

Here are some of the things that I used during the installation:
Audio Technica PRO 70 Lavalier microphone: amzn.to/2KbFU1V
Tacklife digital protractor: amzn.to/2HUBlIG
Makita impact driver: amzn.to/2Fd02gv
Tacklife cordless drill: amzn.to/2K8C21Q
Hitachi brad nailer: amzn.to/2FbOpGI
Plastic Screw Hole Plugs: amzn.to/2HuYLY7

Looks beautiful! I can't make it because I don't have the tools but I'll check and see how much the run for. I would like one. Great job!👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks to you, i absolutely would
Awesome! (Place ladder on the low end of the roof so your ladder extends above the roof line. Then walk the pieces to the top of the roof. Much safer.)
I used your design to build a roof for my cupola. Even with your help, I found it to be challenging, but it turned out great. Thanks for taking the time to document this project!
In my 40's, yes I would make it. But, now at 70, no I wouldn't. A man MUST know and honor to his limitations. Getting it on the barn would be my problem. Good build. Thanks

At 65 yes make it. I would use some help to get it on the roof
I really enjoyed watching that! It is the perfect finishing touch :) Well done!
Awesome job man ! It looks beautiful. It always helps to have all the right tools. Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful job! Thanks for sharing.
Great job. It truly brings out an effect to the barn. Awesome.
Looks great. In the future use a rope to pull items onto the roof. Place the item leaned up on the rails of the ladder and then pull it up with the rope. It is safer and the the ladder keeps it off the side of the building and you can use the low side of the roof as well because the ladder will guild the item over the eve and gutter. Be safe.
Beautiful job. And yes I would build that if I had a barn. Oh and by the way you scared get the heck out of me climbing up that letter with that stuff. All is well that ends well. Thanks for sharing your talents.
You did a fine job. It's very nice .
Stunning.
Beautiful stuff.
Perfect. Thanks for share.
Looks perfect!
Great job!! I wish I had one. 19 degrees 4/12 pitch
Amazing job
Very Impressive! Went back and watched, liked and subscribed on Part 1.
Great work! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Greatly appreciated.
Great job friend! it looks really good' Thanks for sharing the video. 😎👍JP
Real nice job and video!
Lovely
Great Build! New Subscriber!
Bravo.
Great project.....I am thinking about putting a cupola on a Monitor Barn I'm designing with a 2 bedroom living quarters on the top of the barn on my 4 acres lot.
Thank you! I am making a cupola for a friend and have watched your videos over and over because we are going to put it up in parts as you did. As I took good old paper and pencil to do drawings I noticed the lack of explanation of the how to cut bottom 2x4s to the base under the feet. You went straight to the cube? None the less I can see by stopping the videos and studying the photo. So thank you again!

Sorry about that. I'm not sure why that part was omitted. I may have had an issue with the camera not filming that portion, but I don't really remember. I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching. And watching. And watching....😂
I always enjoy home projects like this! However, I was surprised to see that Michael did not install flashings at the base of the cupola. That could probably damage the wooden base when it rains. But I may be wrong. Thanks for sharing!
Just one thing. I would have put some roofing tar on those top shingle nails to cover from weather. just saying. Otherwise, great job!

Good idea. I'll drive over one day and do that.
Looks very nice. My favorite part of the entire build is the truth that it took way longer than expected and that you spent 12 hours on the install. I think video editing can create misleading perceptions on how long a task really takes which lead to us getting frustrated that it takes us a long time to do something, when in reality that isn't really unexpected. Great project!
GREAT JOB, Mike! What a beautiful addition to the barn. I'm sure your clients were more than pleased with the final product. You prevailed 110% with the challenges of all those angles. You're a gluten for challenges. What's next....?

My next major project will likely be a fairly complex coffee table for my daughter. It's complicated enough that I'll have to draw it up ahead of time, which is something that I don't usually do. In the meantime, I have a whole bunch of boxes to make this week for a craft fair that I'll be at next weekend. I'm going to be really busy for the next week!

Look forward to seeing the coffee table build in the future! Good luck with your box builds.
Красота!
Nice work. No im still trying to figure out cutting for two different pitches.
It looks awesome however I wouldn't build it unless I used it for a purpose other than decoration
Gorgeous! Your wife is a lucky lady!
Excellent, excellent job. I came here whether to decide to "build" or "buy" a cupola for my barn. Buy it is!! :) And to echo someone below, the ladder work made me REAL nervous (being a firefighter and all). Why didn't you access the roof from the low side where you could get a few rungs over the roofline??
When building a barn or a shed how do you nail furring strips and how do you get them all perfectly level?
Hello llo! I enjoyed this video. Could something like this be done for a small church without it being shifted or moved, even worst falling off of the church?
@Woodumakeit

I don't see why you couldn't do that as long as it's securely fastened to the roof.
Beautiful project and I would like to build it too. I have watched it over and over and understood all the length and width decisions/measurements, but how did you decide on the height dimensions to match the proportions of your barn?
@Woodumakeit
2 жыл бұрын
I seem to recall that I just sketched it out on a piece of paper and came up with a height that looked proportionally correct. Nothing more sophisticated than that.
Very well done. It adds so much to the look of the barn! Any reason why you didn't use drip edge?
@Woodumakeit

SO LT I had intended to use a drip edge but could find any at the store and grew impatient waiting for help, so I gave up and left. I really should have used one though.

Haa. I've been there. Again, it looks beautiful. Thanks
Excellent job. My only critique would be the shingle overlapping at the corners. One layer overlap is ok, but the number you had make the corners extremely thick and add to the chance the wind along with rain will work under the layers of shingles. One question. After all that work and time, why wasn’t the roof vent cut? The cupola would seem to be the ideal unit to allow the heat and moisture that accumulates at the peak to be released thru the vent.
@Woodumakeit

I wanted to cut a roof vent, but this was for a couple in their 80s who wanted it only for decoration since the barn is empty and unused. It would be easy to cut the vent from below if the need ever arises.
Wow! That is amazing and quite a project. It looked like you were using a pneumatic brad nailer....did you really haul the air compressor onto the roof?
@Woodumakeit
6 жыл бұрын
Ken Ambrose Haha, no. I have a 50ft hose, so the compressor was sitting on the ground.

I was wondering the same thing!
Nice… I was puzzled why you would position the ladder on the highest section of the roof….
@Woodumakeit
Жыл бұрын
I did that for the dramatic effect. 😂
Nice job. My only concern was how you accessed the roof.

Getting back onto the ladder... I might be up there a while.
I'm wanting to buy a cupola, however, I have a tile roof, can I install the same way?
Looks extremely heavy. Did you have to reinforce the roof to handle the weight?
what happened to the finally shadow box coffee table ?
@Woodumakeit
6 жыл бұрын
It took a couple of months for my neighbor to receive his flag form the Navy, and then he decided he did not want to have a triangluar frame around it, so that was pretty much the end of the project. If you want to see how it looks with the medals in place, you can go here and scroll to the bottom of the page. www.instructables.com/id/Shadow-Box-Coffee-Table/
I'd make it with my sister.
i would have asked your friend to stand on another ladder beside you to help carry the cupola to the roof!
Do you sell what you create??
@Woodumakeit
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do sell some of these things. Feel free to contact me via email if you're interested in anything.
Okay, I'm confused. Cupolas are for providing air ventilation, yet an opening on the roof was not provided for it to function as a real cupola. Why all the effort to make one with louvers and all and yet its only there for decoration?
@Woodumakeit
6 жыл бұрын
Two reasons, I guess. I wanted it to look authentic, and I wanted the owner to be able to use it as a functional cupola if they ever decided to return to using the barn for horses. All they'd need to do is cut an opening in the roof under where the cupola sits.
What the heck! All these Cupola video's, and none of them vent, just weather vane mounts!
You said "these days cupola's aren't needed for venting." Why is that?
Alos your ladder is not steep enough to be safe. You should PIN the feet if you work alone. always have R O P E.
I was all in until you said that this was a decorative item and not for any purpose than lipstick. Would have been nice to see if it actually worked.
It's too big for your building. The scale is off.
No overhang on roof??? no angle flashing ? If you are doing it wriong why not go overboard plugging screws. Why is there a camera on them. NO one can see them on the ground. You can use outdoor non stain screws. It would have been labor and >$700 online. But it is useless. NO cut into roof so it is not a vent.
Ok I simply must say this..... I didnt see any safety equipment in use up on that roof....... people, please dont do this... use some fall-protection for gosh sakes! It is not that difficult to set up a rope-tether and wear a harness.
All of my woodworks I made with Woodprix. Google and try it.
carrying off things up a ladder ia not clever... they are called ropes... the can glide things up cautiously especially by yourself. And you are over 13' off the ground hero. not long for this world.
I bought plans from Stodoys and did it very quickly.
